Well, a small update to keep you entertained....
Haven't had a whole lot of "spare" time of late, but I have managed to accomplish a few things....:grinyes:
Been working on the fuel system and come up with this idea..
I bent up a fuel filler neck for the tank and decided to take it a step further...I made a removable gas cap. The Nism-O label is from a 1/24 GT-R kit..
http://images49.fotki.com/v1509/photos/6/63306/7073322/bitsjune09002-vi.jpg
I'll add a tiny chain or lanyard to it so it doesn't go missing....
I then opened the fuel door and fabbed up the internals...Still need to hinge the door..
http://images49.fotki.com/v1520/photos/6/63306/7073322/bitsjune09009-vi.jpg
Fuel tank mounted with thin strips of aluminium, secured with small SH bolts.
Also, just visible is the "old" fuel outlet line...it will no longer get used, but thought it would be kool to leave it in place. It is blocked off with a bolt.
http://images51.fotki.com/v1545/photos/6/63306/7073322/july09004-vi.jpg
(....please excuse the dust....cough, cough.....)
http://images51.fotki.com/v1550/photos/6/63306/7073322/july09010-vi.jpg
Then I decided to make my own aftermarket style electric fuel pump, along with duel in-line filters..
The pump has been tapped to accept tiny bolts when I attach the wiring..
http://images51.fotki.com/v1546/photos/6/63306/7073322/july09009-vi.jpg
I started making up the fuel lines but the fittings aren't to my liking....:frown: So I've just ordered a heap of stuff off Shiryl at Detail Master.
Once I have all that, I will set it all in place....
More soon guys..
cheers
Greg

Love that! I need to build a line just like that - I've been trying to find materials for it, found some pretty good looking elastic, but haven't found the perfect stuff yet. So, I guess I will be the one to ask - what is that stuff you have there??!! The line and the crimped connector? Can you give us a mini tutorial or some hints? ;)

This is coming along well Greg, the details are fantastic.
Nice colour choice too...... Heres a preview of how the exterior will look in TS44... I like your wheel and tyre package much better though.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/obscurepizza/Datsun%20240Z/240Zblue.jpg
I doubt I'll ever get around to finishing this one but hopefully I'll get back to the factory stock.... soon to be orange 240Z shown in the background.
....... if I can draw myself away from this Ferrari addiction I seem to have lately.
Keep up the great work and I hope to see it in person finished at QMHE 09.
Regards, Dan

Bhop,
"it almost makes me want to blow the dust and cobwebs off mine and finish it"
Do it !! I for one, want to see that beast of yours finished....
I hold you accountable for my starting this one...
Mrawl,
The line used for the fuel is solder. It is .8mm in diameter. The red fittings are old Modellers brand, but I will replace them with Detail Master items.
Dan,
Hehe....I liked yours in that blue, I didn't realize it was TS-44....
Yeah, you need to give those Ferrari's the flick......only joking mate.
Yup, will seeya at QMHE man...not sure how close to finished this'll be, but we shall make an appearance...
Todays bench time, a pictorial review.......
Well, today I set about making the brake system up...took way longer than I had planned with the making of extra parts involved....
I had not taken into account I'd have to make a brake proportioning valve etc.......:shakehead
I also made up some nifty (tiny) aluminium brackets to secure it all in place....
Obligatory crappy pic first up....I do apologize, but you get the idea....yes.?

http://images51.fotki.com/v1544/photos/6/63306/7073322/july2509012-vi.jpg

Also pictured are my brake proportioning valve and distribution block/switch..

Oh by the way white97ex grammer don't matter on the net that's Y it was invent so we could all be bad at wot we do best, build model vehicles and show them of to all our forum friends not spell the words right to make U happy, get it??????.

Well Greg, I have to blame you for this I've started on my rally car and this is my first attempt at building a set of extractors for the car, I will do a better set but after fitting it I wonder whether I should as you can't see then once fitted, also I've chucked in a photo of my safari car in colour hope you like it.

I know the 2 photos look different with the colour it's just how the light was when the photo was taken. I could go outside due to rain and the inside light was poor so the flash had to do t's best, the top photo is closest to what the body is painted. The colour is called Ocean Blue and is an Australian Export rattle can.

Wow. This coming along even more and more amazingly with each update. I love when a detailed project snowballs into insanity, and even moreso when it comes out this well! Your brake plumbing and your scratchbuilt fuel set up is just astonishingly good. I can't wait to see more!

Well, overdue update time.....man, where does the time get to.....
Ok, I decided to "add" another over looked engine bay piece...the hood latch mechanism.
I had to partially strip paint to do this, but the outcome has made it worthwhile....:)
The "metal" striker plate is cut from aluminium, it will be re-added after final paint and assembly...
http://images51.fotki.com/v1545/photos/6/63306/7073322/july3009001-vi.jpg
After re-painting. Also "bolted" the two brake servo's/blocks to the firewall and inner fender....
http://images52.fotki.com/v1554/photos/6/63306/7073322/aug09004-vi.jpg
I then started to add some brake lines.
The tiny brackets are cut from aluminium and drilled to accept small bolts to hold them..
http://images51.fotki.com/v1546/photos/6/63306/7073322/july2509011-vi.jpg
Fuel return line also in place now...
http://images51.fotki.com/v1548/photos/6/63306/7073322/aug909006-vi.jpg
Work was carried out on the fuel pump/filters....
This is the second attempt at these...I was not happy with how the first lots of hoses looked...The ends went all weird, and looked squashed..:uhoh:
These are what I will go with....if I don't try to improve them some more....
Fuel pump also received some electrical wiring....

FIRST attempt....
http://images52.fotki.com/v1554/photos/6/63306/7073322/aug909001-vi.jpg
SECOND attempt.....looks much neater I think....
http://images51.fotki.com/v1548/photos/6/63306/7073322/aug909a004-vi.jpg
Main fuel line added....
http://images52.fotki.com/v1553/photos/6/63306/7073322/aug1609brakes008-vi.jpg
"Test" fitting the diff centre....making sure none of the plumbing gets in the way.....
http://images52.fotki.com/v1553/photos/6/63306/7073322/aug1609brakes015-vi.jpg
Finished off the brake lines today....'cept for the piece of flexible hose which will connect to each brake, once they are on...
http://images49.fotki.com/v1555/photos/6/63306/7073322/aug1609brakes021-vi.jpg
Also, in the corner....the windscreen washer bottle....
I had to add this prior to finalizing the brakes, as space confinement would of complicated the fitment..
I added my own twist to this as well...adding a scratched up pump motor, wiring (with connector block) and hose....
http://images49.fotki.com/v1556/photos/6/63306/7073322/aug1609brakes004-vi.jpg

See all that time that you have been spending on the little Z has made you forget about the big one. Does this mean that you might just give it to me after all.
Also I was hopping that when you get your wheels back from your caster that you could let me know as well. I as well might be interested in a set! :naughty:

Five&dime,
yes...it's a shame Tamiya hasn't seen fit to do a re-issue of the ZG, combining parts from the Safari kit... would sell like hot cakes one would think...
I got the Safari as well, cause I wanted the triple carb package..it will eventually be built into a showroom stock build with all the standard parts added...

And I shall definitely keep you in mind when I know something on the wheels mate, no worries..
Five&dime,
yes...it's a shame Tamiya hasn't seen fit to do a re-issue of the ZG, combining parts from the Safari kit... would sell like hot cakes one would think...
I got the Safari as well, cause I wanted the triple carb package..it will eventually be built into a showroom stock build with all the standard parts added...

Greg,
I have gone through and read this whole thread a few times. My eyes hurt... I think it's too funny that Eiji's orange car is in here. Not too mention he just built an identical car in blue as well :) His 1:1 G nose S30's are the most incredible Z's I have ever seen. And Eiji is a super nice guy!!! He lives an hour north of me and will be down here in Richmond for the Z show in October.
Anyway, back to the model.... Are you going to cut the diamond pattern into the trans tunnel panels and rear shock tower panels to simulate the real vinyl from the 1:1?
I am curious how you did the radiator support. Also, how did you make the brake line brackets both for mounting to floor and the ones that stand off in the wheels wells? Also curious how you did the hood latch support. What kinds of materials do I need for scratch building things like this? I have never done stuff like that but really want to start.
I love the idea of solder. What gauge are you using for other wiring? Maybe you could list your sources for some of this stuff. I have been out of the modeling game for so many years I don't even know where to begin.
BTW, My dad has 4 S30's. All years and all immaculate.
Here are the links to his cars and the current resto we are doing. You will see I take tons of photos. Many of which will help you with your detailing efforts I imagine :)
Great model. I hope you start this one again soon!!!
Here are the flickr links. My dad and I do all our own work. Except my dad is having someone else paint his current resto. I normally do my own paint and will be stripping my 510 down soon for a respray in the orange.

Five&dime,
Those are a couple of amazing photo albums, many many thanks..
I can already see more than a couple of useful pics there...underside details etc...
You don't have a close up of the fuel door area do you..? I sorta winged it there...it's not real accurate. :frown:
You and your Dad definatly have a very nice collection..my hats off to you. A great credit to you both for doing most of the work yourselves too..:smokin:
Hey, if Eiji is willing enough to let you close to his motor..I'd love some detail pics...maybe have a go at replicating the induction...
Would be the ultimate to build it identical to his 1:1....:naughty:
Say "hi from down under" when you see him..
I'll go back through all the bits I've used so far and try and cobble a list of stuff mate..the least I can do. :)
Stay tuned.......
cheers

Those are slide valve carbs. Like on motorcycles. They go up and down instead of twisting like buttefly valves. Big $$$. I told Eiji about your model and sent him the link. He thought that was really cool :)

..oops, sorry guys...:naughty:
Just received my first two "test" sample wheels and tyres.....:icon16:
Please...please excuse their dirty condition, I did not even give them a clean up for the pics....
But in general, they are quite clean, free of too much excess flash and will only require minor clean up to look real good...
The rims will only need a clean up on the inside of the outers, and the spokes of course..very easy stuff...
I'm waiting on email from a mate about some turned aluminium valve stems.
If the price is right, I will ADD a set of 4 to each set of wheels/tyres...:)

Thought it was high time I got an update in here....:naughty:
Now that things have settled down some, I've managed a few things here...
Started making a duck-tail rear spoiler, basic sheet plastic and Tamiya 2-part putty.
http://images53.fotki.com/v420/photos/6/63306/7073322/jan2010005-vi.jpg
Mocked up on the hatch lid. It will bolt on from beneath as on a 1:1...
http://images18.fotki.com/v437/photos/6/63306/7073322/jan2010007-vi.jpg
Attention has since been given to interior work.
I decided against using Tamiya's nicely molded rubber-like interior tray...too easy.
"Gutted" was the choice, and started with the sill area...too many holes, but it will help save weight. :icon16:

Soo..an added safety feature or two may come in handy.

That's it for now...the cage has progressed, but will remain secret...untill I'm happy with it.

Attention has since been given to interior work.
I decided against using Tamiya's nicely molded rubber-like interior tray...too easy.
"Gutted" was the choice, and started with the sill area...too many holes, but it will help save weight. :icon16:
