Update..update...
Ok..well, the wheels/tyres are under control...the zorst is all sorted, including a new rear pipe section to the muffler......:)
Thought I'd turn my attention to some suspension work.....You've no doubt seen that I painted the coilovers green, like TEIN.....but not..
And that I want a lowered stance.....well, these kits have rubber grommets at the top of each strut, which just press-fits into the chassis...
IF...I leave the grommets off....I effectively save about 4mm in height...:naughty:
Soooooo....how do I attach the coilovers...? Glad you asked.......
..
...
....
.....
http://images36.fotki.com/v1203/photos/6/63306/7073322/allsorts240zg002-vi.jpg

Almost ALL of the chrome part at the top is enclosed in the grommet, so you can see how much I'll save in height...
http://images38.fotki.com/v1276/photos/6/63306/7073322/allsorts240zg003-vi.jpg

New pipe to rear muffler...I made the bends a lot smoother this time...
http://images39.fotki.com/v1225/photos/6/63306/7073322/allsorts240zg007-vi.jpg

Also filled the tops of the chassis rails...they will be very visible and did not look very 1:1 if left in their molded "open" state....
I've also cut the top section of the radiator support and firewall from the body. They will be attached to the corresponding sections on the chassis, helping to eliminate unsightly joins....
The radiator section is to be all new...look more realistic, I hope.....

Stay tuned guys...I'm on an 8 day break from work, so things are gonna get hectic round here......
Thanks for following along too, your participation is most welcome....

Looking fantastic Greg.

I had only done the chassis rail and firewall mod on mine and thats where it ended.
A bout of Pneaumonia topped off with whooping cough put me out of action for a while.
Now the birth of my new daughter earlier this week has kept me away from the bench a little longer.

I hope to get back to it soon, but atleast I can enjoy your build in the mantime (and maybe I can steal....Errr, borrow some of your ideas for mine...lol)

Keep up the great work, I'm really looking forward to seeing this one come together.

Dan, glad you're over the bugs mate and congrats on your new daughter man..good stuff..
Your fantastic start is what gave me inspiration on this build mate...:wink:I've already stolen your beaut idea with regard to the firewall, plus I'm continuing the same with the radiator support...an all new top section for there,
to make it look more realistic....Don't know why Tamiya chose to do it that way...?..guess it was easier to mold.....

I've done some more to the front strut this morning...fine tuning...and the radiator support is close to being ready for installation...
Should get a pic or two up this arvo....all going well...still horrible drizzly rain down here...:frown:

Update....

Overall body shot...G-nose is on.....
http://images49.fotki.com/v1459/photos/6/63306/7073322/240zgbodyparts010-vi.jpg

Though, not without issues.....the alignment of the headlight buckets was quite poor...
http://images49.fotki.com/v1489/photos/6/63306/7073322/allsorts240zgPt2010-vi.jpg

After much carefull sanding and shaping, it looks much better now....Also visible is my new radiator panel. I opened up some holes which are on the 1:1 cars as well....
http://images47.fotki.com/v1476/photos/6/63306/7073322/allsorts240zgPt3001-vi.jpg

Ok....onto induction. I was drawn between fitting the "stock" twin SU carburetors, Fuel Injection - ex Ferrari, or triple Solex/Weber's....
The Solex won out....
A little back ground on them, and how I happen to have 'em....I have had them for well over 30 years....(make ya feel old..?...:lol2:..)
Yes, I once had an original 240Z Safari version.......the triple's are all that remain. :frown:
Please do not ask about the rest of it......too many sad memories...I think it got "cleared out" during a house move long ago.....
Anyway, being so old, they had signs of my early modelling career all over them.....LOTS of glue.......Major clean up time.
They did clean up thankfully.......
http://images44.fotki.com/v1487/photos/6/63306/7073322/solex006-vi.jpg

Now, I don't have the inlet manifold for them....so, I found some suitable sized spru, not having the correct size plastic rod on hand..and started on a manifold...
http://images49.fotki.com/v1489/photos/6/63306/7073322/solex004-vi.jpg

I made a very crude "jig" to hold them in place whilst glue dried.....
http://images47.fotki.com/v1475/photos/6/63306/7073322/solex003-vi.jpg

End result...well, almost. This is where I'm at. I added a stiffening beam, as most pics I've seen have similar...

Sorry I don't have much to update you'll on guys....
I have been working on the rear tyre. Sidewalls and tread layer all went smoothly...trued it all up.
I then started adding my tread detail, but stuffed it by getting off centred........I've started to re-do it now......
Also, scored a Safari version off ebay.....:evillol:..So, I now will have a brand new inlet manifold and triple Solex carbs...:naughty:
The new one will get built into a "stock" showroom type deal...using the twin SU's from the ZG, plus the stock rims and tyres...

Thanks Dingo and Spidey...:)

Small update, plus info on nuts'n'bolts...

Well...pretty much all my spare time lately has seen the rear tyre taking shape...I got the sidewalls finished and added the main tread layer, then trued it all.
My mis-aligned tread shapes I mentioned got stripped off, and once again I set about adding dozens of the little diamond shapes....

First couple of pics are just a recap on things, showing the rear tyre mounted in place....

http://images47.fotki.com/v1484/photos/6/63306/7073322/tyresnuts003-vi.jpg

And just a closer look at the rear tyre tread..(started..)
http://images46.fotki.com/v1491/photos/6/63306/7073322/tyresnuts014-vi.jpg

The next couple of pics are of the bolts/nuts I'm using for the struts..
They measure up (with digital calipers) at .93mm, which scales up pretty close to 12mm, or half inch.
The size quoted on the package was 14BA..?? Not sure how relevant that is these days, as I got them some years ago...

http://images47.fotki.com/v1477/photos/6/63306/7073322/tyresnuts010-vi.jpg

The tyre is almost complete now....so I'll be sending them, along with the wheels to my resin caster shortly.....
I gotta say.....I'm a little excited about it, cause I really want to see my tyres made from rubber....:)

Don't go too far guys....things could be heating up here, real soon...

UPDATE.....
Suspension work....
I have made a start on more suspension work, starting at the rear..
The instructions call for the two 2-piece rear uprights, to be glued around the lower wishbone....:shakehead...keeping in mind, not to allow glue to touch the moving joint....
NOTE..I also knew, from my previous (30 years ago..) build, that these joints had way too much excess movement.....:frown:
The parts in question are circled in red in the following pic.....Not much room for error.....
http://images44.fotki.com/v1490/photos/6/63306/7073322/rearsusp001-vi.jpg

I thought it out, and decided there had to be a better way....
I decided to go ahead and glue both upright components together, both sides. Who reads or follows instructions anyways.....:lol2:
After giving them plenty of time to cure, I ran a drill through the bore, ready to accept a length of plastic tube.
http://images47.fotki.com/v1478/photos/6/63306/7073322/rearsusp003-vi.jpg

I then carefully removed the bar that was to be the pivot point, and drilled a hole in both sides, ready for bolts.
http://images44.fotki.com/v1488/photos/6/63306/7073322/rearsusp009-vi.jpg

End result...Very strong, yet still fully movable joints which have next to nil excess free play.....
http://images49.fotki.com/v1495/photos/6/63306/7073322/rearsusp010-vi.jpg

After satisfying myself with this, I re-thought the front end...Here too, I knew that there was going to be too much free movement, just because of the design...
The lower control arms "clip" into place on the front sub-frame by two mounting pins. These pins are at the right end in this pic...
http://images46.fotki.com/v1493/photos/6/63306/7073322/frontend003-vi.jpg

I removed these pins and drilled another hole, ready for bolts. This is a pic of my "test mule".....
http://images47.fotki.com/v1498/photos/6/63306/7073322/frontend004-vi.jpg
http://images47.fotki.com/v1499/photos/6/63306/7073322/frontend005-vi.jpg

And finally.....ready for installation......
http://images46.fotki.com/v1492/photos/6/63306/7073322/frontend2002-vi.jpg

That just about ties up the suspension work....
Still lots more to do, the motor may be next to receive some treatment....Stay tuned......

cheers

Haven't got a lot farther this last week, been too tied from work....:shakehead..But I have been trying to nail the final colour choice......
To begin with, the car which drew my attention at the outset, was this one....
http://store.datsunspirit.com/ProductImages/over-fenders.jpg

I just fell head over heels in LOVE with it.......To me, this is just about the perfect Z, regardless of whether or not it's a real ZG model...
It's a '73 model, and the ZG's were '70 only, as far as I've been able to find out....I just liked the "look" and the colour.

Then.....I found some pics of this one........

And this has got to be the best/perfect angle to take a pic at....

I'll make a decision pretty soon....maybe I need a second car.....:grinyes:

What I think you should do is this: the ZG that you are building is going to be custom so go with the blue, the safari kit that you got that you said you wanted to do in a show room stock build paint that orange since orange is a factory color. This way you will get both. Just my thought though......however a second kit isnt a bad idea either......:icon16:

You Tifosi may be shocked to find out that Ferrari didn't invent the color red ;)

I actually really like the orange, but I heart orange on just about anything (oddly I don't really have the balls to paint many models red or orange for some reason). The blue will be perfect, though. You can't go wrong either way, really. It's going to be such a stunning build you could paint it baby poop brown and it would be just beautiful.

Update, May 23rd...

I got to thinking, how I was going to mount the exhaust system.....seeing as I cut off the ugly giant mounting pins that were once on the muffler...
Also, being a non-standard, sports system, a little artistic expression could be wielded....:naughty:
I still wanted to stay within the boundaries of realism though..

Being a larger than stock system, I felt that a mid-pipe mount may be necessary....
http://images43.fotki.com/v1505/photos/6/63306/7073322/zorstbrackets001-vi.jpg

In the rear, I made up an "L" bracket to attach the U-bolt too..the U-bolt clamp is scratched up as well..

And an overall shot, looking towards the front....

I've also started work on a second fuel tank and spare wheel well....When I first planned to build the second Datto as a "stock" street version, I forgot to take into account that the Safari version does not have either of these items.....:screwy:
Either way, they may go onto this build if I get them finished..

Magnificent work. Mal put me on to this thread and it's definitely worth it! Incidentally, I'm the one who has asked him to make me a 1:12 R32 GT-R...... (I have no skills whatsoever).

I think you are utterly mad making the tyres from scratch - the work involved is just crazy. Did you think about cutting the tread in using a craft knife rather than glueing individual tread blocks?

I am loving the care and attention lavished on the suspension and exhaust system. The brackets are works of art in themselves.

I think the standard wheels and tyres are great, but now, seeing the work you've put into the minilites, they are superb and I see your point.

Great build so far - you are an obscenely talented individual! :D

Yes, the tread caused some headaches...still is....:runaround:, but it is coming together...
I did think of trying to "cut" the pattern into the surface, but feared I would fail miserably.....This was the best option I could think of.
The whole exercise could have been helped, had there been a good range of 1/12 spare parts and wheels/tyres out there in the market...

They are great pics, and I've saved them...hope you don't mind.
That is the car of my dreams, and the one which got me started on this build..I've deviated away from it in motor only......so far.
I will need to get another of these kits, as I do want to fully replicate this orange beast to the best of my ability.....in the future...

So, this build will be painted the light blue...a close clone. Sorry to disappoint those wanting the red/orange...

Small update....
Well, now that I've decided on doing the red (Safari version) as a stock showroom build, I realized the fuel tank was going to need changing....the race style fuel cell just would not cut it....
So, this is what I started doing....it's a fairly basic shape, so wasn't that hard to duplicate....

http://images49.fotki.com/v1509/photos/6/63306/7073322/fueltank012-vi.jpg

The most obvious deviation from a stock tank is the fuel feed on the bottom of the tank.
I want to run a duel feed from the tank, so I made a fuel block and mounted in place. It will have duel fuel lines running forward, through twin pump/filters,
which I'll mount on a bracket just in front of the tank. A junction/joiner will then run a single line to the motor.
http://images46.fotki.com/v1506/photos/6/63306/7073322/fueltank2004-vi.jpg

That's it for now....I expect to get a good bit done this coming week as I have some annual leave happening....:evillol:

One of these days Ill dust off my 240Z kit and start building my dream Z. Though that is not a 1/12th scale like yours. However the more I read up on yours, the more it makes me get one.....or two....or three....or....

Fantastic work on the gas tank, one thing that I have been wondering though. When all is done and this project is complete, will you have used any of the kit pieces? Honestly I keep waiting for when Ill start reading a new post saying "...so I decided to scratch build an entire new body for the car today..." I dont know, just wondering.

  Thanks Spidey...
Shouldn't be too many parts left over.....I hope...:lol2: Apart from the big ugly fuel cell in the Safari kit, and probably the old race bucket seats..
I have a nice race style seat lined up for this one, the stock build will get the seats from here...
I guess there will still be the odd part or two that doesn't get a job.....but not enough for another car....:(.. I'm going to need a third, I can tell.....:evillol:

Update...June....

Well.....I'm bored.....................:frown:........

Nah, seriously, I'm actually awaiting the arrival of some more nuts'n'bolts from Scale Hardware......
So......in the mean time, I decided to look into the brakes......non-functional brakes.......sorry for the disappointment........
Tamiya, in their wisdom...(?) molded little stubs on the calipers and drum backing plates....obviously (?) to add brake line (tube) to.....
BUT, not a word in the manual, and nothing in the box to indicate such.....
Undaunted, I'll get around that issue when I get to them...
Now...the E-brake.............NOTHING......not one part in the box to represent it......:headshake Admittedly, it is obscured by the tail shaft and exhaust...but, it still a pretty visible component.

I started by making a base plate from angle, and some basic linkages, all from plastic stock. RBMotion nuts'n'bolts hold it together...
http://images46.fotki.com/v1517/photos/6/63306/7073322/oddsnendsjune001-vi.jpg

Mocked up, just to check alignment etc.....
http://images49.fotki.com/v1521/photos/6/63306/7073322/oddsnendsjune002-vi.jpg

Threw on some dull metallic paint, it will get a dirty wash, once it's all in place...
http://images50.fotki.com/v1515/photos/6/63306/7073322/ebrake002-vi.jpg

It will mount in the tunnel, just ahead of the diff...
http://images49.fotki.com/v1504/photos/6/63306/7073322/ebrake001-vi.jpg

I then turned my attention to some interior work...
The glovebox lid is molded as a separate piece...as this and the Safari version share their dashboard, only the glovebox lid differing...
Trouble was, it is molded quite thick, at approx 3mm.......:wtf:
http://images46.fotki.com/v1516/photos/6/63306/7073322/oddsnendsjune003-vi.jpg

I thinned it, for more scale realism and.........
http://images49.fotki.com/v1521/photos/6/63306/7073322/oddsnendsjune005-vi.jpg

And..........finally......FINISHED !.....I have both tyres done now...just need to get some casting action happening.....

cheers

 Thanks Twenty and Rollin'......

Small update for yous......
I've modified the assembly I made just slightly.....adding an aluminium tube and bolts, rather than the plastic bits I had in there...It's much stronger now.
I also realized after several test fits, there was bound to be issues with interference.....mainly the tail shaft...

I had already trimmed approx 2mm from the diff mount, but decided to cut a hole in the tunnel floor as well, allowing my bracket to now sit flush..Much better..:grinyes:

This is now what the final draft looks like, just resting in place, and connected to the handbrake lever.....

http://images50.fotki.com/v1513/photos/6/63306/7073322/ebrake2003-vi.jpg

And.........
Handbrake...................OFF...
http://images49.fotki.com/v1501/photos/6/63306/7073322/ebrake2004-vi.jpg

Handbrake.......................ON.....
http://images50.fotki.com/v1514/photos/6/63306/7073322/ebrake2005-vi.jpg

I'm hoping to get some colour on the chassis tomorrow or the weekend, as I really want to start adding some of these parts to it permanently...

More soon guys....

Well Ill tell you guys, I have owned two 1:1's 240's in my past. An early 1971 and a 1972, and let me say, they are a complete blast to own and drive. Words cant even describe the feelings of sitting in one, the sound of the L-series motor, the looks that you get. I LOVE those cars with every fiber of my being. Sadly except for 3 1:18's and 2 1:24's they are no longer a part of my life. Someday I plan to get another 1:1, but who knows when that will be. Stump I think that is part of why I enjoy your thread so much, up remind me of all the great memories of my two old cars…….well that, and your charming personality! :icon16:

And thank you too Robi...

Got paint...?...........You betcha.....
Ok, well yesterday I was busy finalizing the chassis...I added brake line brackets, front and rear, two small guides in the tunnel (to hold handbrake cables) and glued the spare wheel holder in place....
It still looks a bit rough, but most of it will be covered by the fuel tank anyways......Once it's all together, it will get a "dirty" wash over everything....

Thanks mate..Yes, I'm very pleased with how good the colour looks...I've only used it on a 1/24 build, and was a little unsure what to expect on a 1/12.....
I'm hoping the trim (nose and fenders) colour will break it up some...so it won't be over powering...

Hi Antonio..

Yes mate, you are absolutely correct.....
It is Tamiya TS-44 Brilliant Blue. I love it......

I ordered (this morning) some Carbon Fiber, from HobbyLink (http://www.hlj.com/index.html) in Japan..
I'm getting the usual black/pewter in 1/12 scale, as well as black/blue (?) in 1/20 scale.....
I'm thinking to use it on the over fenders and a rear spoiler/wing..( I still need to make it.....) I'd like to use blue, if it doesn't appear too small...

Hey Spidey..

Sorry to keep you on edge man.....things have been moving slowly. :frown:
Though, I haven't laid a finger on it in a couple of weeks now....still no word from my tyre maker......
I've had some new items arrive for it, some C/F decal (over-fenders..?..) and some stick-on fabric to do a race seat....:naughty:

I've been filling time working on some smaller 1/25 builds, but hope to get back on this soon mate.
Thanks for your continuing interest Spidey. :)
