Also for me time to upload some pics of XP5 which I took at the Nürburgring back in 1995...

That's a great shot Roger. Did you get a chance to talk with him as well?

Here's some additions to this thread - nothing new for most of us, but can't hurt to keep some of these things together in one place.

XP1 being driven by the men behind the F1 project at Silverstone:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1/1e_1_b.jpg

An unpainted XP2 & XP3 together:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1/XP2_and_XP3.jpg

XP5 at Ehra Lessien for the top speed run in 1998. Note the missing windscreen wiper and the front plate "decal" to aid with the aerodynamics.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1/920315b.jpg

If you look closely here you'll see the shut lines taped over around the bonnet and tape over the turn signal lenses as well:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1/920307as.jpg

The magic number:

The glamour shot to celebrate:

The first three pics are XP4 OR 5

Could the last pic be 002? (dorchester grey) or 005 (jet black)

Good eye LeMan - looking at it closer now I think the 4th photo is #003. It appears that the mirror base and mirror shape is more like the Citroen units and the interior is a match for #003's original fitment. Chassis #003 was the first F1 to feature the U-shaped cutouts for the door lock indentation.

I'd still wager that the first 3 shots are XP5, because XP4's original color when it wore that nose treatment was much lighter and more gray.

Erik

The plates fitted to the car are what are known in the UK as (Motor) "Trade Plates" They are always red writing on a white background with a red border. One will have a Triangle on the top with owner (dealer) information on, the other will not.

I don't know if you have something similar in the US, so I'll explain. to drive a car legally on UK roads. It has to have (sale date defining) licence plates, a paid up vehicle Excise Duty (small paper disc in the windscreen) and if the car is over 3 year old a valid Ministry of Transport Test certificate (basically road worthiness/emissions check once a year) I'm told the converted race cars struggle to pass the emisions part. ;)

If however, the car is brand new a car dealer or manufacturer will have a set of Trade Plates which they can put onto ANY car and will exempt the car and driver from these requirements.

McLaren have a couple of these and as you may know one of the things they do when servicing the cars is remove the owners plates to ensure annonymity and use their own plates if they need to road test a vehicle. I've seen SLRs running around Woking with Trade plates fitted so it's something they still do.

Front turn signals / Indicators look different to XP5 (see sig :D )

Most states here have both Dealer and Manufacturer plates that allow for similar use as you have described.

Also, I'm not sure you were discounting the fact that those three shots are XP5 based on the differing front indicators, but if so I do have other shots of XP5 with the same early nose treatment. :)

The location featured in the photos is Shalford where the composite work for the F1 was undertaken. Every once in a while a completed car would be driven over from Woking to give the guys at Shalford a chance to see what it was all about.

http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=sj1k6jgyk10h&style=b&lvl=2&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=29556092&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1

The building used was formerly part of Ferrari GTO, John Barnard's technical office when he designed for the Ferrari F1 team. Right next door was another building still used by Barnard and you can see in some of the photos various Fiat group cars which were company cars used by the staff, mostly Alfa Romeo.

hurstg01 (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/member.php?u=101397), there's something wrong with the link to the last page of the CAR Magazine McLaren F1 GTR Le Mans test article. It can't be opened or downloaded. Please do fix it as soon as possible, as I'm dying to finish the article and find out what happened.

PS: Ignore my lame-ass user name, it was from a time when I thought that a DBS could ever be better than a Pagani Zonda Cinque or McLaren F1 GTR Le Mans (both natural rivals to each other, and quite probably the best supercars in the world by far in all aspects of performance). Stupid, stupid, silly old me......

Anyone else think its kinda cool they are still using XP for the new Mclaren MP4-12C?

http://gallery.me.com/stevomacrocket/101209/D20_9444/web.jpg?ver=12675593020001

Did they start at XP1, or did they continue from XP6?....

Yes it's cool they're using the XP#'s on the MP4-12C protos as well. What I've read so far they have had about 20 of them driving about million test miles or kms together so far. About the numbering I suppose they started them from 1, or why was the LM proto XP1LM and not XP6. But then again the GT proto was with its chassis number: 56XPGT and not XP1GT. :dunno:

Anyway would be nice to see if they make a more aggressive version of this MP4-12C in a style of LM as they have told the plans to make a F430 GT2 rival of it. Such street version in papaya orange & black would be nice to see. It would also make a nice addition to my 1/43 collection as such. :)

I think, something is missing about this car. Just can't really see nothing special on it, outside looks I mean.
Oppisite round was McLaren F1, which I loved seen it after 1 second! :runaround:

But anyway, about that GT2 case; there is rumours really that McLaren is planning to get this car on the race tracks. Finish Television company MTV3 told that staff from McLaren factory has been seen on Ferrari's factory, seems that they went there to disscuss this racing case.

I wonder would this be GT2 or even GT1 which has now own championship this year. Well we'll see that later on I think.

Yes it wasn't "love at first sight" but after some time it is beginning to appeal more and more. The rear is still ugly but if they re-work it to more racing kind of rear (like F430 to Scuderia, or LP640 to SV) it could be more tolerable. Also the front needs something similar as was made with F1 to GTR. I really like how they did it on the Murcielago for the SV's (LP670-4) front.

F1 is hard to beat in styling, maybe some Astons come close to it. But MP4-12C is not the direct successor to F1, just a new McLaren for the road. They have plans to later bring a higher performing sports car, that will possibly be a closer relative to the legend.

YEP 100% agree.
Murciélago SV is great example that even old model can be "new" again.
Like it was Diablo's, they did serval "more porwerfull" versions of it. SV, SV-R, GT and GTR and those were defenitely more brutal looking versions than the basic ones!

Same case McLaren F1...the road car was superb, but then the images of LM or GTR........... Lost all the words back then. After that the car was perfect.

Here might be some direct what we could might expect?!
Note the GT1 badge........

XP6 was the first SLR prototype, crashed at high speed during testing @ Nardo (sounds a familiar story.......).

XP series of numbering was adopted from F1 project (XP1-5) through SLR project (XP6 -9) and now applies to MP4-12C project (XP10- ?).
