Give me the height of the McLaren F1, with the passenger doors fully open
(that is from floor level, to the top of the door edge)
Also provide conformation of this measurement, by posting the article. you found it printed in
Seem's its too tough - I'm guessing it'll be in an issue of Racecar
Perhaps it might be easier for some, to measure an actual car :) .
Not this week, maybe next, certainly soon.....:);):)

So, no new question this week? We normally have it by now :(

I shall leave the last question open. You will be doing well, if you get to measure someones F1 Greg, Not unless Erik beats you to it.

On to this weeks Question,

Tell me the calculated top speed of a 97 F1 GTR, set up for the Mulsanne straight at Leman.

hurstg01
12-02-2007, 10:53 AM
317km/h / 196.94mph - It was after the chicanes [ L'Arche and La Florendiere] were added to the Mulsanne (1990?), lessening the potential for a higher top speed (approx. 230mph+ for the old Group C cars pre-chicanes)

The answer to the 97GTR calculated top speed is:- 199.7 MPH (As per the 97 GTR engineers manual)

This weeks question,

Does the F1 LM have a modem link to the factory for servicing.

If so supply a pic, of its installation on the LM.

Hmmm, seems the interest has faded in the quiz. Shame really, I was saving some really good prizes for this week, leading up to the festive break.

Merry xmas and a happy new year everybody.

I wouldn't say it has faded - there has been very little activity on this site so far this week; your last question was also a toughy - I looked through all my LM pics and couldn' find one with a decent shot of the compartment where the modem would lik up to [if it has one].

This is the closest I've got (I think I remember seeing it on the near side (UK) of #013....)

The LMs defintely do not have the modem port in the same location where the standard F1s do. Here's a close up shot of that spot on the car and a second one of the entire panel courtesy of our friend drewwtms and as you can see the LM only has the socket for the trickle charger. The modem connector and it's activation button are both missing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20E/th_3522925-O.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20E/3522925-O.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20E/th_3522903-O.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20E/3522903-O.jpg)

I can't claim to know whether they tucked away in a different location, but given this photographic evidence of the most likely place one would find it, I'm going to guess that the LMs do not have the modem link at all. I never mind being proven wrong when guessing, as that will mean that I'd get to learn something new. ;)

We have a winner, well done Erik,

According to McLarens technical data, the LM was not fitted with a modem link. (unless someone can prove otherwise) The LM being like a GTR by having only engine ECU,s. Unlike the road F1 which has engine and chassis ECU,s.

I shall send you a interesting prize, asap.

As an interesting side note, while on the subject of the modem link. I remember watching a program on BBC with Quentin Wilson and Katie Humble on car technology. They had XP5 in Birmingham and had a technician in Woking operate the windscreen wiper and turn the headlights on via the modem link.

I've had that pic since this morning and have been playing around with the light levels [I'm a beginner to this Paintshop malarkey so I haven't got it sorted as yet........:)] to get a definite ID on it - although your reasoning that the Enzo could be a Silver one would make it chassis #046!

Interesting that nobody has answered this question, so I shall keep it running for this week as well.

Perhaps it might be easier for some, to measure an actual car :) .
Although I did not have an actual measuring device with me, I was next to an open F1 today and noticed that it was quite close to my size. I'm 191cm tall with shoes with a 2 1/2 centimeter sole. I can't remember if it was taller or shorter than me, but it was by 3 or so cm, so I'm gonna submit 2 answers, hopefully one is correct.

1905mm or 1960mm.

Even if it's wrong, do I get something for actually thinking of this while standing next to a McLaren? :D

It is definitely not Shalford or Genesis which were the two primary locations for F1 production and development so I am interested to see someone provide the answer.

At last we have the correct answer:runaround: well done Greg.

Unit 12 is now being used by a stage/set company. So no more McLaren connection with that important piece of history.

I have not seen any evidence where the batches of 96 and 97 GTR,s were built, not unless somebody is holding out on us. Although I have pics of 10R in prototype build, I will check if that car was built in the same building. McLaren and BMW were joined in a touring car program at that time, so they could have been built elsewhere.

I can't believe this is still unanswered with this much McLaren F1 knowledge in one place. I am not sure of the answer, but if i remember correctly I have seen the answer in a magazine review of the car referring to the amount of space required in a parking garage to get in, park, and get out of the car (from a practicality standpoint obviously). Does that sound familiar to anyone?
