I've only had 4 hours sleep, but I can't wait to get out there and see this POS sitting on my trailer. Ridiculous.
It was dynoed toward the end of last year. The owner couldn't find the sheets, but it was 4 digits. It came with a 861 whp dyno sheet at only 45 psi, but I'm almost positive I remember it doing about 1045 without the nitrous at higher boost.
The car needs a little work to get it running again but it's not too bad. Then we just have to learn how to tune it and drive it.

Chad and I got a ton of pics yesterday, it will take a while to sort through them.
As far as all the work being already, well that just means that all the money has already been spent too. There has to be 60-70k in this car not including costs that are "lost" like endless dyno time and other expenses. The car has been local for a long time, and in an effort to keep it local the previous owner kept reducing the price. It eventually got to the point where if we didn't buy it I feel our sexual preference would have come into question. Plus the lower the price, the greater the chance that it will fall into the wrong hands. Like ours. :D
I also expect the maintenance costs will be enough to keep us on the verge of going broke, and God forbid we break anything. There are a lot of things on this car that are quite new to us. Very expensive built two speed automatics with transbrakes and all that crap, block filled with concrete, huge turbo running an absolute ton of boost, suspension setup and adjustments to get the thing off the line without stuffing it in the wall, etc. I'm looking forward to doing all the AEM tuning on this beast, but the learning curve is steep and we can't afford to make any mistakes. :) I'd say there is still plenty of challenge in it for us.

It should take us a couple weeks to get it all back together. There is a box of parts mainly consisting of the intake manifold and throttle body that we may not get for a week or two. That will slow us down. I'd be working on it this week if we had all the parts.
I'm dying to get it all back together, get an AEM in it, and fire it up.

The EVO is a POS. It went 11.60 at 122 before the turbo's thrust bearing ate it. I really have to stay away from thrust bearing turbos and go BB... By the time I took out the Revolvers and put some 280s back in it it wouldn't make any power. Turbo is getting sent back for a rebuild, but then it's getting sold to buy parts for the RWD. EVO goes back on the stock turbo and nitrous. I will likely still attempt to go real low 11s on it. I did a lot of work on the setup to get the Green to work better that should help out the stock turbo as well. With the Shep Tcase finally in I can launch it again too.
When we dropped the car off at the POS garage Chad took about 70 pics. I plan to get them up on the site later this week. We're still waiting on parts to start work, perhaps next week. It's looking like Mike Turbo is going to continue to support this car, which is a good thing. Found out from him that as far as he knows the turbo isn't a GT45, it's a Borg Warner S400, which makes much more sense. But we're going to kick it down a notch until we learn how to drive this thing either way. Either a 4094, or something with a dry center like a T70 so we don't have to come up with water lines (that would suck).

Cool beans. Yeah, water cooled turbos FTL. I see the point of it, I just think thats too many lines coming off a turbo. They are kind of a pain in the ass to hook up and thats just that much else to leak/break. Too bad I am going with the stock look so my choices are all water cooled :(. So you are going to drive it eh? Any sponsors or is it all on you?
kjewer1
08-02-2007, 06:33 AM
Chad's going to be doing most of the driving. I get to do all the tuning, so it's only fair I guess. :) Either of us can do the wrenching on it. I'll be driving it now and again for sure though, and definitely getting my single digit license in it.
We're contacting all of the companys with stickers on the car to see if they will continue to support us or if they're getting ripped off the car. It looks like Mike Turbo is going to help out at least a little. To be honest I'd rather do it all on our own, run some mean times, then look for sponsers to help keep it running. But any parts we can get free or real cheap will get us on the track faster without breaking our banks.

With NOPI this weekend and more work than I planned on, I won't have anything up soon. We're still waiting for parts, but yesterday we yanked all the stickers and cleaned it up, and made a new home for it in the POS garage. I'm hoping the previous owner can get our box of miscellaneous parts down this weekend during NOPI and we can start on it next week.
This thing will definitely be a handful to drive. A different previous owner told us that if he didn't do a good burnout, it would get squirrelly when it shifting into high gear at mid track. And that was with about half the horsepower, LMAO. God help us...

We didn't bother contacting half of them. Chad and I both have this problem where we just hate everyone, and would rather just get it done on our own.
Definitely won't be done for the SO. Well, it should be "running" by then, but I'm not going to rush the tuning on this thing, and Chad's not going to rush the driving either. I'm exepcting 2 full dyno sessions, and at least 1 track rental, just to get aquainted with this POS.

POSR site is back up. If someone wants to, this thread can get moved to the Projects forum so I can find it when I feel the need to update.
The smaller turbo is installed, but it's not very small. It's a journal bearing GT4294 that I picked up for a good price on NABR. Took some doing to mate it with our manifold, but it's bolted in. Pics on the site. I have the 4 inch exhaust built, just need to break the tack welds, clean it up, seam weld it, and paint it. I'll have more pics of that on the site later, but some early pics are there.
Unfortunately when we started it up there were pinhole leaks in the radiator. WTF. No dyno yet. Repairing that core isn't really feasible, so it's time for another 600 dollar custom race radiator. The import event is this saturday, so it's not looking too good. Best case scenario I get a radiator by Wed (year right), Dyno/tune it on thursday, and bring it to the track Saturday with no shakedown runs behind us, which will suck and we'll probably do Run Only in that case.
Alternator is dead too.
What a pain in my ass...

No dyno again this week, more set backs. As we get closer and start testing more systems, the more broken shit we find. Yesterday I tried to power up the AEM Gauge type WBO2 controller for the first time, it's dead. Luckily my room mate is going to let me steal my old Techedge unit back, which has been running every single day for at least the last 5 years. It really does pay to get a unit built with quality components, not some POS stuffed into a little 52mm guage casing.

Update from late last week. Radiator 16an outlets welded on. Disconnected the upper radiator line from the water neck and filled the system from there. Kicked the pump on with hose disconnected to make sure it circulates fluid; it does. We'll add that remote filler neck later so we can fill it completely and so it will self bleed air.
With an adjustment to the throttle body it idles well. Let it run for a long time, coolant temps held right around 200. The wideband that worked in Ron's car only reads mid 14s, and the red LED blinks like it thinks it's still warming up. WTF is it with this car and WBs... I was thinking that it probably won't read right at idle in a foot long 4" pipe, but the blinking LED indicates a problem. I'll try the sensor from the EVO later.
I didn't play with it too much, but it looks like the car will build some boost on the transbrake at least. Somewhere up around 5-6k rpm it moved the boost gauge needle 2 or 3 pounds. I'll mess with it some more later when a working alternator is installed, but between tuning and cam gear adjustments I think we'll be fine.
Going to install the nitrous this week just in case. Hoping to at least have new dyno numbers by friday, but I've said that before. ;)

Pics of the upper radiator hose can be seen here. (http://www.posracing.net/RWDmorepics.html) I'm extremely pleased with how this came out! Nitrous is installed, but I swapped the jets around and disconnected and plugged the fuel line, basically turning it into a 45hp dry shot to run with AEM providing the fuel. The GT42r will only use like 60-70% of the 1600s, so there is plenty of headroom.
Found out I had to raise the idle because the timing was way off. Synced up the timing in AEM and it runs much better and 400 rpm higher, lmao. Last week I converted the AEM over to version 1.19, which I'm glad is now behind me... The timing belt got hosed, so that's been replaced, and I made some new bolts to hold the damper pulley on. Alternator wasn't charging even after replacing it. Turned out to be the excitation wiring, that's all be rectified.
At this point it starts and runs well, doesn't over heat or stall or any other BS, holds fluids, no issues. I'm pretty confident that it will see the dyno this coming week. Already made an appointment, which says a lot. :) Keep everything you've got crossed...

kjewer1
11-01-2007, 12:40 AM
Tbelt must have eaten a bolt or something, not really sure. The front of the motor and the tbelt have no covers at all, not even a water pump pulley to block some of it. :) Too easy for crap to get in there, but that's the nature of the beast... I'm hoping on the Mightymax I can rework some stock covers to provide at least some protection, since that will get daily driven.

Welp, took the RWD to the dyno for some preliminary testing. There's no doubt that it's a major pain in the ass to move this car around, load and unload the trailer, etc. It took an hour just to get a tach signal (had to take it from the MSD box, couldn't get a signal off the COP). Also couldn't get the wideband to read properly in the AEM. I realized that the dyno uses the same sensor I do, so I just plugged my sensor into their hardware. Excellent.
Started with some vac tuning, but without the wbo2 in aem and the sloppy converter and way out of whack tune, it just wasn't gonna happen. Said F it and moved on to WOT runs. Since the turbo spools so late, and I wanted to start with short pulls because the tune was way off (starting from scratch), we just went from 5-7k. Wouldn't even build boost or rev up, LMAO. SEveral pulls later it was in the ball park, and boost worked its way up to about 15 psi with AFR in the low 11s. Turned the boost up to 25 psi, and made another AFR adjustment. Worked well, power was alright, so we decided to go to 9k.
Well, at just over 7k all hell broke loose. Coolant was shooting across the shop thanks to what must be a blown HG. The turbo finally started to build some steam and sounded wicked. Then there was an absurd vibration like the whole building was coming down. The right slick blew off the rim and nearly totaled the car. I don't even want to go into that part...
In the end it was a worthwhile trip though. Now we know how to hook this thing up to the dyno, so the next time it will be simple. We got a good starting tune to begin with next time. We know what the MBC is set to. All these things that are so simple on a street car that are such a pain in the ass on this thing, since we can't drive it to get it in the ballpark. Ultimately, at only 7000 rpm and 25 psi it did 380 on a mustang dyno. The turbo didn't even spool till 6500, and the power curve was a straight line going up at a 45 degree angle. The EVO's best on a Mustang dyno was 395, LMAO. At the same boost pressure, but higher rpm, coincidentally. If torque held, which it should on a setup this big, it would make some nice power for the boost at 8 or 9k rpm. I'm sure by 10k it might start leveling off pretty good since the BC cams tend to be somewhat advanced straight up.
I already have two new tire tubes on the way, since the fiasco with the tire pulled the stem out. The tires also have only 4 screws, so I ordered enough to do 16 per side, 32 per wheel. That ought to hold them on at high speed. Also have a head gasket on the way, and if the has ARP studs they're getting shitcanned for some stronger ones. Hopefully I can get this thing back on the dyno next week, I'm dyning to see what it does with some rpm and some real boost.

That ought to hold them on at high speed. Also have a head gasket on the way, and if the has ARP studs they're getting shitcanned for some stronger ones. Hopefully I can get this thing back on the dyno next week, I'm dyning to see what it does with some rpm and some real boost.

Atleast you've got a start on it. Sucks about the head gasket and the tire coming off though. You think the head gasket was blown when you bought it? Anything planned for the head while you got it off?

Damn Kevin! Shits crazy. How far do you expect to be able to rev it? Time to O ring the block? So are the tires actually bolted onto the rim?

My car is quivering in fear out in the garage lol. Best of luck with the next dyno run. That does suck that you have to tow it everywhere you go tho.

They're most likely screwed to the rim.

I'm positive. Compression was zero across the board when we first fired it up. 3 of the 4 cylinders came up, the 4th stayed down around 90. Figured it was either sticky rings or a blown HG. It was actually shooting coolant out on the first pulls at 14 psi. I don't think it's even possible to blow a HG at 14 psi on a setup like this. Nothing really planned for the head, aside from getting it checked for warpage. There's nothing left to be done to it that I know of.
This motor gets reved to 10k. I'll probably only take it to 9500 though. I don't want it to run any higher unless we run out of gear and have no choice. I'm hoping the tires grow enough at speed that we don't have to though. High rpm is tough on bearings. Not going to oring the block or had. At a max of 45-50 psi I think we can get away with out it with the right setup.
The tires are screwed to the rim, yes. I got the tires dismounted and can now read this riddle a little more clearly. It looks like the tube just plain failed. It split almost all the way around the circumference. It would then have probably all ended up on one side of the tire, adding a nice ~8 lb weight to that side and completely throwing off the balance and causing all the vibration and wheel movement we saw on the roller. The beads are meant to be able to hold air, but the valve stem is part of the tube and doesn't seal to the rim, which is why it was leaking there. I have both new tubes in, and we're swapping from the 29x14.5s to the 29x13.5s while we're at it.
HG is in, just waiting for some A1 head studs. Then it's just reinstall the head, mount the tires/tubes, and it's back to the dyno.

The only ones good enough are wrought by Chuck Norris himself, made purely of his beard hair round house kicked into formation. It is said that Kevin Jewer is the only one capable of bringing one to its demise. :D

If I get brown nosed I usually PM the person and tell them to go flirt with someone else. ;)
That shit was funny. And I'm proud of my uncanny affinity for breaking parts in new and unheard of ways.

So Thor should be expecting a PM then right?
Damnit Kevin stop breaking stuff and get that thing going with some videos. Blown HG FTL.
