What to do with a Saturn?

Hey, my friend has a Saturn (I think it's 1998). It's your basic 4 banger, and he's wanting more power out of it (he can't even get the thing to spin the tires! Even in reverse!). He put one of those huge round mufflers on it....but didn't help much. What would you guys reccomend he do to make it go faster? I don't know much about the newer technology and electronics that you guys deal with (like in his saturn), hence, I have the good ole power of the '81 corvette....so I thought I'd just see what you guys have to say. And remember, he doesn't want to pay a whole lot...so just the best bang for the buck. Is there any kind of chip he can put in it or something else? (no Nitrous, turbo or superchargers). Thanks!

Nope, there isn't much he can do without a turbo or internal modications.
Here's what he can do, take the cylinder head to a machine shop and have the ports matched and a bit of bowl work done.
After that, he might be able to find a header for it, that might pick up a few horses.
Other than that, the only way to get more speed out of a saturn cheaply is to crash it and use the insurance money to buy a faster car.

Sorry, but HP costs money.
The Saturn would benefit from a K&N drop-in filter & cut a bigger hole in the air filter's intake box.
Other than that, I've seen some sweet Saturrns, but again they put $$$ into them.

Get some stickers. Those make everything go faster. oh, and a body kit and maybe a wing. That'll drop at least 45 HP in it right off the bat.
In all honesty, there's not much for a saturn. If you want to soup a car and have lots of parts avalible for everything you can think of, buy a Civic.

HP costs money allright, how fast do you want to spend. Port matching is easy and can be done at home, picks up a few horsies and gives you better mileage. Leave port enlargement and bowl work to the pros though, or you will kill your cylinder head.
I would never advise cutting up your airbox, it's just more likely to get dirt and stuff on your filter. Contrary to popular belief, a K&N filter is not always effective. In fact, most box/sheet style filter flow a lot more than the engine needs, yes, even when dirty. Ever seen a dirty K&N? Regular filters work fine most of the time...

well, I did notice a slight change in milage, and a possable change in power when I did get one,
And no, if you got the time its really easy to recharge one, and its alot cheeper, the kit is $11 but its got a good 5 uses.

A saturn is an economy car it's not built for speed. It's that simple. He will spend a lot of money and ruin his car if he wants to make it faster, he needs a different car.

hmm..well maybe this guy doesn't have the option of trading it in? I'd say..if ya want a little bit of extra boost, put in a K&N Filter, or Tornado Fuel Saver(ya know, those things you see the infomercials for). Then think about headers, exhaust, etc. Or just drive the damn thing, and not worry about racing, unless you line up with a Geo or something:flash:

Actually, you're right about Civics not being about to go fast but at least they got tons of potential with the overwhelming number of aftermarket parts and stuff. In retrospect, I should have bought an Integra but I had no knowledge of the whole import thing until after I bought it. Now I'm trying to correct the mistake by saving up for a B18C5! :D

Not all civic's are built as economy cars as their primary use, just as not all ford mustangs are built for speed.

Let me be the first to say my bad.
to 94svt5.0 my buddy Zep has a 94 SVT, he and I did these mods to it
GT-40 heads with Ford/Crane roller rocker arms and stiffer springs, High Flow Cobra intake Plenum and lower manifold, 7ke Revised cam, Modified sequential fuel injection, Modified pullies, light weight flywheel, EEC-IV ECU and calibration,Stainless steel headers, Oil cooler, Transmission Bearing upgrade and Phosphate coated gears- she gets 285 lb/ft torque at 4000RPM and 240 hp at 4800RPM that car is a demon.

As I said before
Look for different rims, from a junkyard even if they are slightly, not dubs, but slightly bigger, so you have low profile tires on them, make sure they are light as possable too...
Lowering springs, not for looks, but for a lower center of gravity
Do intake work, you can be gettho about it *like me!* and make your own parts and use a k&n filter, or other filter...whatever...use a filter....and make your own cold air system, just take off your air box, also the silencer and run piping down through there to where its away from the engine and anywhere which gets too hot, have the filter there.

Me and my buddy here (hybirdsol) have had some expierence with Saturns (Ben's) and Have come to the point that they are made for cheap people that want a car to hopefully get them from point A to B, but usually wont even do that! Secondly the big muffler he put on there was a complete waste of money, a saturn bearly produces enought back pressure for a stock muffler none the less a performacen one. My advice, SELL IT AND BUY A HONDA!!!

no they insulted civic's in general as you quite often do I have noticed. No matter that is your opinion and I respect that. I have views of german engineering that I'm not going to share b/c it might offend someone, as you have degrating views on Japanese cars primarly honda civic which you share frequently. Not all civic's are built as economy cars as their primary use, just as not all ford mustangs are built for speed.
I think you've misread into my posts, I have nothing against Japanese cars, or even the civic for that matter. I just see far too many people throwing money at a civic, which is the entry level honda, to make it a drag racer... Okay, adding power and tuning your suspension is a good step for any car, but a civic that runs 10s is generally not streetable, compared to a domestic or even a RWD Japanese or other import...
If I needed a car to commute daily through a busy area, a civic with an auto would be high on my list of cars to drive, but I wouldn't try to turn one into a drag racer. I don't think enough people concentrate on Hondas touring car efforts, in the British and Australian Touring car championships. They run 300hp Accords on road courses, and they are a pretty good team. It's sort of like NASCAR, but on road course, and with imports... check it out.

Is that a joke? That is complete crap. If he did that, it was not a cobra to start out with. That is the list of modifications that the cobra motor came STOCK with. And that is the stock hp and torque ratings of a 94/95 cobra.
Hers is the 94/95 cobra stats. http://www.scoa.org/info/1994-info.htm

(sorry didint put conversion) was just trying to point out that I was farmiliar with your car and it wasen't a cobra before it was for A.S.A.D.G. full tear down(just trying to give your car some props). Cbass- I am farmiliar with the British Touring car championships, I think that thompson won last year priaulx came in like 5th for honda with a civc I think marsh in production class only had like 95 pts. kaye had a 161 in a civic might be the other way around can't remember, 10 sec street cars (that are legal) from germany or japan I don't see many around here if any. Don't get me wrong man I like german cars (beemer VANOS) I'm just more comfortable with Jap. engineering. To each his own right?

I don't follow the touring series anymore, the speed channel doesn't show the races anymore :(
Are they running Civics now? When I watched before they were running Accords, and not doing too badly I might add... As for my taste in cars, Porsche all the way :D
