Where do you build?

We've probably hit on this subject before, but I'm curious to see (or hear about) where you build your models.

Here's a shot of my workroom. I recently moved from a tiny apartment into a house, and was able to put together a room just for modeling. It's great to finally have some space to work!

The bench top is a hollow-core door from a home improvement store. I keep most of my tools in the red tool cabinet, and most of my paints and glues in the cabinet at the left of the shot (under the pachinko machine). You can just see the paint-covered edge of my paint booth, too.

Where do you do most of your modeling? Show us!

Matt

Cool pachinko machine! :D More pics of that? ;)

I'm currently in a tiny apartment. :( I have a desk in the corner of the bedroom, and I go outside to spray paint in a cardbord box on my patio. No pics yet...

This is the work station as it was just assembled a couple months ago in my new house. I finished this room in my basement strictly for hobby/display/slot cars etc. The bench is 10 feet long, and of course you can't see the top of it now as I have been modeling hard recently.

:p

At the moment we're building our models in the dining room on the dining room table. :p It's good for air as it opens onto the deck. Lots of sun and a nice breeze. :D

in my garage. The workbench was there when we moved in and I bought 2 large sheets of veneer from Home Depot to use as a modelling surface; it stays crowded as seen in this recent shot:

i don't have a pic of it, but we just renovated our house, so now that the laundry equipment has moved upstairs, i have a whole storage room in the basement to work with. i have 2 desks, a couple of shelves on the wall, a sink, and a few windows to let some air in when the fumes are flying.

I used to model in my room. It had a big table and shelves, but I moved downstairs to a smaller table for 2 reasons: 1.) I feared long term exposure to chemicals while I slept and 2.) downstairs is closer to the kitchen range hood. Stay tuned to see what I mean..
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/kaiyao1/workspace.jpg
That's my current workspace. Kinda cramped, but I like it since I have easier access to everything. :)
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/kaiyao1/workspace1.jpg
That's my "spray booth" made from an old science project. I definitely need to build a new "spray booth" since this one is pretty dirty. The kitchen range hoods are rated at 1150 CPM or thereabouts.

When airbrushing, vapor is nearly nonexistent, however when spraying Krylon and Tamiya the smell can get pretty heavy, which is why I own a double filter paint mask. The smell never leaves the kitchen, though, so its doing its job. My parents have never complained about any smell..

And finally, ideally I would like to have the type of desk found in cubicle office jobs. If you've never seen a cubicle, think of two tables that meet in a corner of a room, and you sit right where the two meet. That way, you have access to two tables worth of stuff with minimum effort.

My dad made them for me one weekend, he has a bunch of power tools in our basement he likes to use every chance he gets. :D When you have limited space, sometimes you need to think vertically as well.

Hell yeah!!! I want one too.

When I move out (probably many years down the road) I want to decorate my entire garage with Ferrari things. And maybe one day I will have an actual 1:1 Ferrari to go with them.:D :D

Well, I just recently set this space up (building my first model since around 15 years ago!) down in my dingy old basement (rental.) So it is pretty low-tech (except for the laptop and wireless LAN for instant access to AF modeling forum while working - and Internet radio!)

Who can find the HPI RS4 Mercedes CLK-GTR way hidden in the above pic?

Heh...in keeping with the Ferrari theme...this trunk is right next to my work area:

Wish I had all that space. I rent a room so I don't have all the space that I would like to have. My modelling/writing/study/computer/general purpose table is about 3 feet wide and 1.5 feet deep.

Half of it is occupied up by a computer monitor, and the other half is supposed to be a work area. That's where I do my stuff. :)

No pics, but once I get a digicam I'll post some of my pathetic workspace.

I don't know why, but I sense this need to take a trip to a town called Camp Hill......935k3:D

I just got a little corner of the lounge in the apartment, I got a window for light in the day though, and enough lights for the Titanic at night....and I tossed my 'spray booth' when my Dad came to visit 3 weeks ago, so I have to make a new one.....:p
It's comfortable and works for me, and it is also the best I ever had anyhow....strangely enough.

Well first time i painted in my room. I made a box corner and sprayed there. My room smelled for couple days. Then i had headaches. Still was afraid to spray outside, since i live right by the road and alot of dust is around here.

Here are some photos of my work area out in the garage. Also where I keep my stash of paint and kits!

I don't have a spray booth just airbrush on the table and get paint dust everywhere. By opening the front and back doors I get decent ventilation, but always wear a respirator as well. When I spray with cans I do it outside.

RallyRaider, that is just too organised!! Great workspace though.

I do all my modelling at my desk in the bedroom. The only disadvantae is that I have to pack up after eveery session.

I mainly use automotive spray cans, so spraying is done outside in the garden on a crappy old crate, so I'm at the mercy of the weather! I also use a double filter spraymask designed by the manufacturers of the paint. It works great, but I look like I'm about to go combat training in chemical warfare everytime I go to spray a model!!

I'll try to remember to shoot a couple pictures of the booth.

It's a booth offered by Micro-Mark. I bought it a little more than a year ago, and it's been a good investment. Painting in the house is just too dangerous without one, and here in Wisconsin, I HAVE to paint inside most of the year!

The booth is a "downdraft" model -- the fumes are drawn through a filter in the floor of the booth. They exit the booth through a flexible aluminum tube (the kind used for clothes dryers). I vent the booth through a window -- I built a plywood "plug" that fits in the opened window, and the vent runs through that. I can set it up or tear it down in a couple of minutes, and the plug keeps the fumes (or the cold outside air) from coming back into the room.

I'm probably not explaining things very well. I'll shoot some pictures in the next couple of days to show you what I'm talking about.

Oh there's a resin 306 in there alright Seb! Two of them in fact, Modellers and Renaisance. Only the one Heller 205 Evo2 however, (can you believe I only bought it for the decals? :() the other Heller boxes are a Renault 5 Turbo and Peugeot 905. There is also an Xsara there somewhere just out of shot!
