max speed in ur car?

my '92 accord (first car) goes decently quickly, it's heavier than the civic so it's better at high speeds but not so much on acceleration. i don't push her though because i think the clutch is a little weak and second gear is weak. it tops out in third gear at 150kph (about 95mph) and then i usually shut it down, i don't really want to risk a blown engine because the seals around my oil pan are going, hasn't started leaking yet but they'll need to be replaced soon.

are you saying it can't go faster? it can probably hit 115 if i wanted to, that's about it, i'm not claiming that my car's fast, just saying i don't want to see where the top speed is because i don't want to break it, it isn't a new car, it's got about 230,000 km's on it and it's got to last me through university.

mhmm, the civic started shaking crazy after 95mph or so.

my friend's done 115 in a '00 accord 6-cyl. with me. stupid of him, it was a state highway that troopers usually infest, but it was his car, and i was too drunk to care. infact i believe i was laughing uncontrollably.

my friend and i did almost 140 in a stock lightning at millbrook. it was a little scary.

they've been recorded at 147, but we couldn't get any more out of it.

here it's 10%. on the basis of many speedos being 10% out.

so you can get away with 77 in a 70 zone.

i said they're obligated to give us that, they give us way more. everyone does 10km/hr over he speed limit, 15 over in 80's, 20 or 30 over in 90's and100 zones, and nobody gets pulled over

Or a brick.

Take the example of the handling of a lifted 4x4 vs an F1 car. Question answered.

vinnym86

what's interesting is aerodynamics on a truck are better when the gate is up then down. It makes perfect sense after you know that air traveling over the truck starts a convection flow inside the truck bed. This flow of "trapped" air acts as a smooth roofline down to the end of the truck. Opening the gate will release the trapped air and create more handling problems.
So if you see someone with their gate open with nothing in their bed, tell 'em to shut it.

i always thought it was something like 10% + 4mph or it might've been 10% +3 mph AND that was based on margin of error on equipement on boths sides.
i.e errors in the calibration of radar gun AND errors in the calibration of speedometers.

hmm, perhaps that's where the 10% in what I was told comes from.

one of the motorcycle forums i go to has a moderator who's also a cop. he says that he's told to give a buffer of 10 mph in any zone under 55mph and a 12-15 mph buffer for 55 + zones. but that's only relevant here in the states.

I've also heard that 10% + 3mph is safe. 1mph above that and you're flashed. Who knows...

It really depends on the cop and how he's feeling that day. Maybe NY cops are told to give a buffer, but I got flagged by a cop n the burbs near chicago for 8 over, 53 in a 45. But that particular town is known for its petty police force

one thing i do remember is that this was only applicable to mobile police units and their portable equipment. I also recall that one of the things you should ask for if you really are innocent or only just over the limit, is to request a calibration report on whatever it was that recorded your speed because of this, to better ascertain the margin of error in the readings.
This does probably mean that it doesn't apply to the big yellow boxes though.

on the subject of camera flashing.
on the way home on the A12 last week, I was having a bit of a giggle with a bmw driver and was going mayb e 60-65mph. No big deal on a regular dual carriageway with a 50mph limit.
Thing is, it was quite apparent that the other driver didn't know where the speed cameras were and at one instance, I saw the first flash of the camera as he went through the speed trap and I am positive that the second flash occured as I was in the speed trap.
Wonder if I'll hear anything from them about that one?

well, thing is, they need two clear shots to work out the speed.
if the camera was legit and the images gets processed, they'd get one shot of a BMW 3 in one shot and magically, a Yaris in the second shot.....

update: i went 112 in my accord today on my way back from university.
got pissed because these people changed their plans, originally we were supposed to go to Hull (just across the river from my city, about 15 minutes away) where the drinking age is 18 (its 18 in 3 out of 10 canadian provinces) but instead they decided they'd go to somewhere in ottawa (my city) but i don't have a fake ID so i couldn't go. i wasted 30 minutes to university, 30 minutes back, an hour i spent waiting around not being able to get ahold of anyone, and a shitload of gas. i could have gone faster but there was a turn coming up. i suspect my car tops out at 120mph.

i suspect that there are a lot of stories like this one here in this thread...

i did about 350 mile an hour one time and then right afterward i went to this huge party and banged like 80 chicks that were NFL cheerleaders and then i drove off a flatbed towtruck and got airborne like the dukes of hazard and came crashing down and didnt even have a scratch!!!!

-translation... went 80 before car ran out of power, got drunk and probably hit on a bunch of fat chicks, then ran into the back of a flatbed truck as i left thier crappy apartment and totalled the car that was only worth 500 bucks anyways...

and about the ~80hp civic (was that the car?) at 2200lbs. my aspire was 63hp stock, but mine had issues so more like 55hp, and 2000lbs going 95 down a hill shaking like crazy.

You have a 92? I had a 90 Accord EX Auto w/ I/H/E and topped it out at 128mph a few times. It is possible there may have been a slight downhill slope, but I don't recall. But I did it at least 2 or 3 times.

118 in my old '87 accord auto down a steep hill. 112 on the flat.

99 in a '91 tercel in western Montana :). It would go absolutely no faster

84 in a '99 freightliner FL70 straight truck loaded at weight limit going downhill well beyond the 78 mph governor.

An indicated 134 in my old manual '99 accord figure it must have been about 127 cause that is where it was supposed to be governed.

And, 135 in '06 WRX wagon with much more to give.

My 99 Crown Vic could probably do 120 or so, the speedo goes to 135, but I don't think the 3.55s will let me do that. Fastest I've gone is 100 in it.

Sold it, due to a bunch of small stuff being in need of fixing/replacement, upcoming maintainence, and then a rusted out fuel line cracked. All pretty easy overall to fix/replace, but I just didn't want to dump any more money into the car at that point. Motor is still great from what I know, needs new valve seals, but with 160k...that's to be expected.

theres a town nearby that the cops will give you a ticket for 1-2 over.
there were lots of people in my defensive driving class that had tickets for 2 over in madison Va. the guy running the class said he once had someone in for 1.5 over.

Bullshit.

Unless you have a Cosi Escort, which would run at least $300,000, you couldn't go that fast unless you had some serious mods. Stock they just don't have the aerodynamics or the right power to weight ratio to pull it off.

In fact, a mid 90s Mustang couldn't even break 140s stock. They had to cover the front openings with cardboard and take off the windshield wipers to get 141.

Anyhow, the fastest I've knowingly driven was 120 in my '94 Eagle Vision TSi it had a little more to go but a blown intake manifold gasket and a limiter kept it from going any faster. In my first GTC I wrapped the speedometer back around to 30MPH. The stock one goes to 125MPH so I don't know how fast I was going, I would guess close to 140MPH.
