:grinyes: Hooray Robi's back. Paintwork looks great, polished out really nice.

I know that some people are having troubles with Revell's plastic in there new releases with it reacting with even mild paints. Apparently it is caused by the plastic, I think they are using a new formula and this is causing the problems. Haven't heard anything negative about Fujimi's or Tamiya's plastic yet.

Robi,
Nice to see you back! I hope all is well.
Did you thin the decanted Tamiya paint? If you did, I would say that the thinner was too hot. That happens sometimes with lacquers and causes etching?
You have done a great job polishing the body anyway. It looks really smooth!

Guys, thank you for the welcome-back messages, really touching. Thanks !

Mike (I think they are using a new formula and this is causing the problems. Haven't heard anything negative about Fujimi's or Tamiya's plastic yet) > The same opinion, Mike. Fujimi is doing the same, my friend Alessandro had the same troubles on his F430 Option and Challenge too, I got the Cayman last week and apparently seems the same poor, or at least critical, plastic quality. I also think Tamiya is changing his TS formula, probably due to new restrictions. Anyone knows?

robrex (Did you thin the decanted Tamiya paint?) > No Rob, I did not, just to avoid the problems you’re explaining !

bai (is there any update on your engine modification?) > Not at the moment, I’m slowly working on the F430, sorry.

Enzoenvy1 (Have you by chance seen the wonderful luck I have had with mine?!) > Yes man, you’re crazy ! I damaged the final color with my motortool but I did not re-paint the whole car, just retouched the body with the same color applied with a brush and then sanded and polished, btw what a patient you have !!!

That’s all for the moment, bye ! R :)

Hi Guys, I’ve to be honest: I lost motivation in my F430. Meanwhile I always followed your works here, started a pair of new kits, and now timidly re-started working on this. Still pending the critical point of the engine, I tried to find out something relaxing.
Once again, I cleaned and cured all the panel lines

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch163.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch164.jpg

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch166.jpg

Then, I moved on the undercarriage. One of the main problem of this F430 is its line, here and there it needs to be slimmed and since the tail looks a little “heavy” I partially sanded the bottom of the rear diffuser

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch167.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch168.jpg

At the same time I slightly reshaped the intake plenum, too squared for the Challenge

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch169.jpg

That’s all for the moment, sorry for the tiny update. I hope to restarted seriously soon.
Thanks for your comments and attention.

Hi, as previously told, I’m taking care about the seat belts and I’m also working on the interiors.
I’m still choosing the proper etched set: some of the current 1/24 available seem to be a bit undersized and I’d like to test the cloth material I recently bought on eBay

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch170.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch171.jpg

Then, since I had from beginning the EP-0012 set from Crazy Modeler for the F430 which carry the dash’s vents (the F430 Challenge set doesn’t), I removed the molded-in vents drilling the pertinent holes and made a test with the positioning of the etched items. For sure it will be easier to cleanly paint

Hi to all, another tiny update.

On the seat, some holes for the seat belts are missing. I started drilling the guide holes with the motortool
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch175.jpg

and then refined them with a mill, file and #1200 grit
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch176.jpg

also slightly rescribed the seat lines to have more contrast once painted
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch177.jpg

I’ll start from the back, so I prepared the “jig” for the carbon decals (KA Models) using paper tape
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch178.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch179.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch180.jpg

The jig has been placed on the back of the decals to trace the shape
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch181.jpg

Then, to improve the adhesion of the decals I sprayed with gloss clear the back of the seat
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch182.jpg

Soon the rest. Have a nice weekend and thanks for watching!

Robi :)

Nice step by step Robi. The holes you drilled in the seat are much neater than I usually manage with a pin vice and a scalpal; I am going to use your technique next time.

P.S. Thanks for the kind words about my website.

Robi J

Hi again.

I wanted to test the KA decals: it comes from Cartograf (so a warranty itself). I cut out the template I prepared and I traced two small cuts in the lower area
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch183.jpg

Then, with softening solution and hairdryer I worked the decals. I got many plies and I'm not satified with the result (the truth is that I MUST practice !!!), but the KA decals is really sturdy and on less complex surfaces would turn out really nice
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/F430%20Challenge/430ch184.jpg

That's all for the moment. Bye !

1) with the clearcoat, you can barely tell; and 2) that area of the seat back won't show on the model. Nice job!

sjelic
04-28-2008, 02:43 AM
Robi don't use Gunze on KA decals, the thing is that it doesn't work as well as it should, it dries the decal to fast, to much. Microscale works much better but even no solvent + hairdryer works fine. KA CF is the best one I have tried.

Despite everything, clear coat really gives that something. Nice and clear work.

Hi Roberto,

I was following this WIP since the start.

A very good work. Please come back modeling over this masterpiece!
CF on back of seat is incredibly shining!

Did you use TOPCOAT from Gunze? Is that aggressive as Ts13 with decals?

Congratulazioni, un ottimo lavoro!! e che verniciatura.. (few italian words for RobiJ)

Ciao Cobra,

many thanks for the kind words about my Challenge, always and really appreciated.

Top Coat is from Mr. Hobby

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a163/RJ1108/Various/IMG_4652.jpg

if you need it, try here
http://www.modellismobaracca.com/index.php?manufacturers_id=258&osCsid=4538643870add5f00e15feae07400c00

or there
http://www.dodicicilindri.it/html/home.htm

I tested the B-501 on a scrap body with Tamiya and JWTM (Cartograf) decals a couple of years ago. No reaction at all, Top Coat in my experience is definitely not aggressive on decals, instead of the TS-13. Furthermore is easier to polish to glass shine and seems more steady over the years.

Hi Robi,

I saw this product at the Novegro fair last time I was there ( for all the friends here on AF, Novegro is a town where a Hobby exhibition is done every year, few Km. from Milan ) but I was not very convinced about its potentials.

I've been always little scared by TS13, It has to be used very very carefully!

I know ModellismoBaracca, it's great shop!

I definetly go there to have a look for this clear:bananasmi!

Grazie e a presto!
