Hi
Just finished off my latest GP500 bikes and decided to start a long awaited build. Long time since I did a street bike so I'm going to tune a Yamaha R1.

Bike will get seat pipes, mono swing arm, new brake discs and calipers and a lot of scratch built details.
Frame will be flat black and the cowls some nice red color. Looked through the amazing Cobra Colors but as I'm in Sweden it will probably end up Tamiya Metallic Red or something...

To achieve my goal I will bash the Tamiya Yamaha R1 together with the Tamiya Ducati 916. Add to that, some calipers and fenders from GP bikes.

These kits haven't got that many parts so hopefully it will be a pretty fast build (say not more than 6 months...) but getting the added detail right may take me a while. I guess making the seat pipes and rebuilding the R1 swing to a mono one will be the most time consuming parts.

To start off, I've stripped the chrome plating and begun filling the frame parts.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/filledframe.jpg

I've glued the tank and seat cowl halfs together and started working on the seams. I've opened up holes in both parts wich will get PE mesh installed from the inside. Have to open up the bottom of the tank to achieve that but that's a later issue...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/topcowls2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/topcowls.jpg

Started working on the side cowlings as well. The R1 kit has 98/99 version cowlings and they are a bit too dressed for this tuner. I've cut some plastic off and will continue filing and sanding it to some nicer shape.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/sidecowls.jpg

R1 calipers is a bit dull for my taste. I've taking the lower part of the forks including Brembo calipers from a ´01 Yamaha YZR500 GP bike and will use the fork arms from the R1 kit so they fit with the tri-clamps. Sliding parts will be machined brass.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/frontforks.jpg

The R1 front fender (to the right) is a bit large and boring. I need something more agressive and sporty. Choice fell on the smaller fender from the GP bike mentioned above. Some work is needed to fit it in between the fork arms and the fender will get meshed holes like the tank and seat cowl.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/frontfenders.jpg

How's that for a start? Tell me what you think.

Joel

Hi, nice to see another bike being built, not enough IMO. I'll be watching this with interest. As you are using parts from the 916, why don't you use the swinging arm off that complete with the whole wheel assembly, wouldn't that be easier? Keep up the good work and the updates coming.

joelwideqvist
02-10-2006, 11:03 AM
Hi, yes it would definately be easier, but as always things aren't as straight forward as you like them to be. When I started planning for this project (like two years ago...) I was going to do just as you suggest but the Ducati swing is just too short, wich makes the wheel hit the frame. Instead I'll have to walk the long way, rebuilding the R1 swing and reshape the Ducati wheel to center in the new swing. I'll be using the Ducati chain, brake disc and caliper though.

Started cleaning up some of the minor parts today and sorting them for painting.
I'm having some trouble regarding the engine color, don't know if I shall do it the conventional steel/black way or put some gold into the top area. What do you think?

As I know progress threads are worthless without pics I put in a picture of one of the the brake discs. I'm cutting them to represent wave style discs. This goes for both front and rear brake systems. I've sanded down the molded in washers and rivets to be replaced with PE ones.
There is still some cleaning up to do before painting them:

Well, don't know how long it's been since I posted this thread... I've done some minor progress since then but thinking of heating this build process up a bit. I mounted the larger parts together for a mock up of the final result. As you can see there is plenty left to do but you get the idea of what it is supposed to become.
Larger modifications that's left is to rebuild the swing a bit more to make it look better and to make room for the seat pipes. I also have to come up with an idea of how to mount the new front fender.

Here are the mock up shots (they were taken in too bright sun light, hence the crappy quality :banghead: ) As the rear damper isn't installed I got a bit of an ugly lift of the rear on the first pic...:

There has been a few but as you say, they are not many. At least not here at AF. I'll fix the new exhaust pipes and the swing so that I can move on with it.

So, things are starting to happen around here. More progress in two days than I've made in six months...

Today I started working on the new swing arm. I've decided to make it a mono swing as it gives the bike a more sporty look. I've cut the right side arm off the old R1 swing. After that I've grinded the right side of the swing just inside the foot peg carrier to make room for the new seat pipes.
I've added some epoxy putty to the cut off edges and will start shaping that as soon as it has dried.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/swingputty2.jpg

I will be using the under seat mufflers from the Ducati 916 kit. That leaves me with the job to make new exhaust pipes and to make them fit into the exup of the R1 system. I've used styrene rod with a 3,5 mm diameter. That dimension looks quite alright on the bike and fits like a dream into the mufflers.
I made a dummy out of wire for the first pipe, heated the rod over a candle and formed it after the dummy. It took two runs to make it look good. Going at the second pipe I just followed the curves of the first one making it a lot easier.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/newpipes.jpg

This is how it looks with the pipes fitted into the frame.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/newpipesinstalled2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/newpipesinstalled3.jpg

I still have to fit the ends into the exup but I think that's going to be a minor problem. A bigger one is to hang the whole system so that it doesn't tilt. Any ideas.

Lot of puttying going on right now. Swing is almost done, so is the frame. I've decided to move on down the scratch building road and try and get the bike an airbox. We'll see how that project turns out...
Cowlings has got their first run of primer and I've found some imperfections to take care of. Think I've also decided to paint the tank and perhaps the front fender in some contrasting color, like metallic grey or black.

To give you guys something I have now finished off the remodeling of the brake discs. Had a bit of mishap with the rear one but nothing serious. All molded in rivets has been removed and shall be replaced with PE ones. Know I have to clean them up a bit and prepare for some paint.

(flame mode) I don't really like this new motorbike section as this is primarily an automotive forum. We've seen an increase in bikes lately and I think that number will decrease again as not that many people will look at our projects. But please, proove me wrong. (/flame mode)

Here's the latest updates on my R1:

I painted the R1 rims Tamiya TS-14 Black and let them cure. I then masked off all of the outer parts and left only the center and spokes to be painted with Alclad II pale gold. This is how they looked masked off

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/maskedrims.jpg

and this is how it turned out when the masking tape was removed

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/paintedrims.jpg

Engine's starting to come together but the airbox is getting me a headache. Hopefully I can show some engine pics later this week.

With the rims painted I'm left with the deciscion on wich set of tires to put on them. I have to choose between R1, Ducati 916 or a set of Yoshimura Hayabusa ones I have stucked away. Will take some pictures and show you the differences.

Hey Joel,

Rims are looking outstanding, I really like the color combination and the masking job is perfect.

On your other comment, I had mixed feelings when I first saw it as well, but after looking through the threads before and saying several times "Wow, I never saw that one", I kind of changed my mind. Yes, I agree that bikes are not a prominent force on the forum, but why should I have to search ( not that that function is the greatest, nor have I ever found exactly what I was looking for ) through a sea for cars for a bike thread. Most of the other forums I visit ( predominantly auto ) are broken down into different groups and I have gotten used to it, so why not here ? I like all forms of modeling, but when I want to look at bikes, I don't want to fart around looking at 35 Skylines in the process.

I am glad to see a jump in the bike modeling world and I hope it doesn't decrease. There are new aftermarket products coming out every month, and there have been more new kits offered than there have been in a long time. I have seen the growth in Moto GP over the past few years and this year is the most exciting year I have seen in a long time. I think, nay.... I know, that it will definitely help fuel the modeling future. For example, I just heard that Tamiya will be reissuing the Honda NSR250, the GP Legend decals are the contibuting factor in their desicion. No... they didn't have visions of Yen dancing in their heads, not at all. But, that in turn shed light on 3-4 new decal sets that otherwise would not have been done, because the kit supply was getting low.

I think its a chain effect. One of the modelers on this and other forums was, and still is a fantastic car modeler. He got bitten by the bike bug and in turn, is turning out some of the most fantastic bikes I have seen. Theres you, Roca, Robrex and several others who have brought bike models to a whole new level, so why not give them a spotlight and help others get bitten too.

Well, I just wanted to throw a few pennies in. I hope I didn't miss your point, if I did, forget what I said.

Hi Joel the bike looks very good and the rims too i love those exhaust and the modified brakes.

I'm agree with you guys , i hope to see more motorcycle modelers on this subforum anyhow i'm will be there trying to give my experience and showing my projects.

For sure... i think and i hope that in this new subforum will be more people showing the works.
And well.. i'm thinking to make every year a special model like RS Cube To motivate the people to make motorcycle models.

Best regards and sorry for the little off-topic

well, perhaps you're right guys. What I mean is that putting your work on a forum is primarily an ego trip, narrowing the potential number of visitors makes it less thrilling. I've started looking much much more at auto modelling since I joined here as I think I have a lot of techniques to learn. I think it can be the other way around as well but having to enter a sub forum outside your own sphere of interests might lessen the chance of that to happen.
So to sum it up - my flaming basicly comes down to ego factors...

Glad you like the work so far and yes, more pictures are to come during the next couple of days. So stay tuned

Roca, the R1 kit meassures 6,0 cm in the frontmost point of the seat and 6,5 cm in the rearmost end. At the point where you put your arrow it is 6,3 mm high.

Now to some updates:

On the tire issue I decided to go with the Ducati tyres as they look most agressive among the three sets I mentioned. They will look like this.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/tyres.jpg

Engine's starting to come together. I decided to paint the block flat black like on the more recent R1:s. Other parts of the engine will are so far painted Alclad II Pale gold and Jet Exhaust. There are of coarse more parts to come, I will do some black and some CF. Parts are just glued in place, they will need a wash.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/engineright.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/engineleft.jpg

I finished off the work on the brake discs. They have been a real hazzle but they turned out ok. I didn't get them cleaned up to the degree I wanted them but they started to fall a part so I put the Xacto away... I sanded down all rivets and washers and replaced them with Model Factory Hiro rivets and Scale Motorsport washers. As the rivets has quite a long pin I filed them down on the back with a modelling file.
Here are the front discs:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/frontdiscs.jpg

and here are the rear:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/reardisc2.jpg

Stopped sanding the cowls and went for the primer a couple of days ago. Today I sprayed the parts that will be Metallic Red with some TS-17 to give them a silver base. I think the Red will look better that way. The tank is left primed to get painted with Metallic grey

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/cowls_silver.jpg

Finally for today, the swing has reached its final shape, a lot of work with epoxy putty and Tamiya putty and between those sanding sanding sanding. Now I will prime it and paint it flat black together with the frame.

Ok, so it's time for another larger update on my pimping project. Unfortunately it can be the last for a while, at least in this large quantity. i graduated from my education friday and have had this week off and with the wife working I had hell of a lot more building time than I've had in two years.

Now to the goodies:

Engine is slowly comming together. I've painted the carburators with Alclad II Jet Exhaust, masked them off and painted details semi-gloss black and Alclad II Pale Gold. I hotted the thing up by adding some CF to the oil filter and painting the start engine Pale Gold and metallic red. I think especially the red made a stand out once installed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/enginebottom.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/startengine.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/enginetop.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/engineright2.jpg

I went about some CF-ing as well (hmm new word...) As it's a pimped ride, you've got to have CF. Preferably lots... My first thought was actually a full CF bike but that's way too far from my league. I decided to lift some of the parts instead. Here are pictures of one of the side cowlings together with a plate that goes between the top and side cowls. Quite a crappy image...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/cf_plates.jpg

Next was the head light housing and that was quite fun. Took some time but I think I got more out of it than I invested. All CF parts has been painted with Tamiya Smoke and then Tamiya clear. As the acrylic paint is slow drying I made the mistake to mask off the headlights too quick for the Alclad Pale Gold treatment. This left me with some dull areas on top but I will fix that later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/lightsside.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/lightsfront.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/lightsrear.jpg

Last but not least as they will be very visible on the finished project, are the rear view mirrors. These were pretty tricky and I'm not fully satisfied with the result but this is done on the first try.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/mirror2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/mirror.jpg

I also finished off the rear damper set up. It's painted Alclad II Pale Gold and Jet Exhaust (what else??) and the spring is cowling color, Mica Red. I've added some Scale Motorsport Washers.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/reardamper2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/reardamper.jpg

Last but not least (as I now you guys just want the shiny parts :nono: ) I did some progress with the cowlings. I've painted all cowling parts except the tank wit Tamiya (TS-39??) Mica Red, and the tank with Tamiya Metallic Grey. I had an incident with the side/lower cowls so they are lagging a few coats of clear and I haven't taken any pictures of those just yet. So far all cowlings has got Tamiya Primer, followed by 1 mist and 2 wet coats of paint and finally 1 mist and 4 wet coats of Modelers' "Super Clear" (an absolute favourite of mine). I'll think about adding some decals and go for a gentle sand/polish and then finish off with a couple of more clear coats.
I think the Red/Grey combo turned out very well, and I'm so far very pleased with the result. I would like to have myself a dust free area to spray in. Bloody hell those cowls attract lint and dust particles... Well well, here we go.

So, it's time for a minor update. I've done some work to the head lights painting the glass clear yellow and tried to tint the wind screen with a, let's say so so result... wind screen has to get some more work, will think about how.
In the mean time I'll show you the finished mufflers. These are the stages they went through.

1. Glued pieces together, cut hangers.
2. Sanded down the molded in rivets and drilled holes with .5 mm drill bit
3. Puttied, sanded, putted, sanded...
4. Painted gloss black enamel
5. Put on some SMS carbon fiber decals.
6. Painted whole shabang with Modelers' Super Clear
7. Masked off the CF area and painted the end parts Alclad II Pale gold
8. Inserted Model Factory Hiro aluminum rivets in the pre drilled holes.

The result are as follows:

I will do some aluminum brackets out of Bare Metal Foil. They will be easier to install and get a bit of structure if the rings are left where they are.

Oh shit...
I was going to install the mesh on th einside of the tank yesterday. I thought it would work fine to use the hole on the bottom of the tank but that was totally impossible. I was planning on putting some styrene over that hole later and cover the styrene with CF but that is just to forget now.
To install the mesh I had to cut nearly the whole bottom tank away as the tank has some curves that makes it tricky to reach in. I also had a smaller mishap wich made the hole a bit too wide on the right side. Now it will be almost impossible to cover the hole. I just have to try the tank installed on the frame and see how visible it is and if it can be left untouched.
This is why you dy fit...

don't you just love making a mistake, lol. One day you will be able to laugh at it, anyway how did the colour of saddle work out ?

I put it away for a few days and today I started planning for a way to solve it. I'll see what I can do about it during the following days. I've installed the first mesh and will fit the other one today. I think it looks quite good. I have to paint the inside of the seat cowl black before installing the mesh on that one.
I haven't painted the seat yet. But I think I will soon.

Some days off and trying to make some progress on this sucker. I've started to correct the tank mishap. Going slowly but It will turn out quite ok. After all the tank bottom isn't that visible is it? I've also dropped the idea of scratch building an airbox. R1 as many other bikes use a tank dummy over tank and airbox and I think it will just be to much work to make it look good.

I've finished off the top cowl. I painted the head light glass clear yellow and the wind screen with smoke. Had to put a lot of smoke to make a clear finish. This also made the paint run quite badly leaving me with a small dot in the middle of the screen where there's no paint. Not that visible though.
Mirrors are painted black and Alclad gold and the black areas are covered with Scale motorsport CF decals. Molded in rivets are sanded and Model Factory Hiro rivets installed. Inside of the cowling was supposed to get CF treatment but I was satisfied with flat black. I put two washers on the inside to recreate mirror fittings. Enjoy.

The lower cowl and side cowls come in one piece. On the front side of the lower cowl there is a V-shape. I've painted this one Alclad gold and installed Studio 27 mesh from the inside. Side cowls are cut on an earlier stage. Inside is painted flat black and the panel line is painted with a Gundam marker.
Sorry for the bad lighting.

Front fender is painted flat black on the inside. Two Model Factory Hiro rivets installed on each side. If you missed out on it earlier on this fender comes from a GP500 Yamaha YZR.

I testfitted the seat and tank cowls on the frame with engine installed. Frame is so far painted Alclad gold, white parts will be flat black.

Hey, it's coming along great!

Too bad you can hardly see the CF in the headlight housing with the yellow-ish window. but it sure looks nice!

Looking forward to seeing that swingarm!!!
