Yes, perhaps you're right. I had another comment on Mautomobile that the yellow color made the bike look old... Leaving the light clear should as you say also have made the CF more visible, so perhaps I should have left the glass unpainted :dunno:

Swingarm has been painted today together with the frame. Pics tomorrow.

Look good to me so far,

They do, don't they? I counted them for fun and I think I will end up having used around 70 rivets on this build when finished... A tip is to try and get hold of the Model Factory Hiro rivets as they are much cheaper than the Sakatsu ones. I think I bought 100 MFH ones for less than 10 USD and I think Sakatsu costs around 5 USD for just 8 rivets...

Did quite a bit of work today but most smaller details that won't be visible until further ahead in the WIP. What I'm about to show are the painted frame and swing arm. I chose to do both in flat black. I've used Tamiya laquer spray, wich I emptied from the can and sprayed through air brush. I did the Alclad gold and CF on the frame first, masked off and then sprayed the black. I think the filling of the frame fell out very good although it was a real pain to get it evened out as the shape of the frame is quite complex.

I've added some washers and a few rivets, none of wich is very visible in these photos.

Swing arm has got some brake line fastners wich I made out of hex rod and cut in shape. Hole shabang is then painted flat black. I was going for full CF on the mud guard but I've stripped the paint and will do it metallic grey with some CF areas.

Took a picture of the painted seat today for a friend (it was he who suggested the color actually) and I think it will be pretty good. Seat looks quite dead now though, don't you think? I have to make it come to life with some pencil or crayon powder or something. Or just make it darker (it looks lighter than it actually is in the photo)

Hi, really great build so far. I really like all the little details you've done and every part looks amazing. As for the seat, it could do with a little more depth...so maybe giving it a grainy texture? Or darker somehow.

Hey Joel

Yeah i love the cowl and the tank fuel

I think that the seat is a new innovation that can looks good, maybe with an effect like leather (red) should be great

I'm planning on darkening the seat. I know it looks kind of pink on the picture but it is a mix of dark brown, white and flat flesh. I think I'll redo it and stay with dark brown and white.
Thanks for your comments.

Hi. This will be a real mix actually. I'll use the 4-1 part going from cylinder heads to EXUP from the Yamaha R1 kit. Next part of the pipes is scratch built (I'm actually trying to fit the two parts together right know...) and at the end are the mufflers from the Ducati 916 kit.
Hope that answers your question.

maybe it's silly question, but have you ever heard for akrapovic?

08-17-2006, 05:36 AM
Aha, you mean the 1/1 brand I'm trying to recreat? If that is so I've actually had my eyes on the Akrapovic systems. I guess this will in the end be decided upon wich decal that suits the muffler best. As there is some brackets to be added I think the Akrapovich decal will be to long and reach across the brackets. Today I'm leaning towards IXIL or Leo Vince.

i've seen you're from sweden, thats why i asked if you ever heard...
i've tried maaany types and at the end everything ends up on akrapovic! i liked wings on hayabusa, but after some thousand km is toooo loud.
if you wont few more hp and good sound akrapovic is good choice.

As mentioned above I'm currently working on the exhaust system. This is a task I've pushed in front of me during the whole build as it will be tricky to fit the scratch built pipes into the EXUP with the right angle. Photo below shows where I started out. I've been struggling to get the frontmost one in place and did so until I cut too much plastic away and the pipe went too short :banghead:. Well, well, glued a small piece at the end and hopefully it will do fine tomorrow. The other pipe will be trickier as it has a more complex way to the EXUP. It is hard to meassure the angle and hold that one in my head while holding the plastic rod over the candle. I've tried a few ways to sort it and think I'm on my way.

Fitted the scratch built pipes into the EXUP today. The styrene rods fit beautifulli in the mufflers but as expected it was harder to get them into the EXUP. I heated and bent the pipes and then glued them in place with super glue. After curing I put on some putty whilst still test fitted on the bike. Hopefully I'll get a hard mount as it will have to manage the heavy load. My next fear is that it will be hard to fit the system after painting as it now is in one piece...will see about that one. Here's two pics of the EXUP connection.

More progress:

Glued the rear damper into the swing arm and test fitted the chain and chain guard. Chain isn't detailed yet, just painted Pale gold and XF-56 Metallic grey. Chain guard will get some washers added.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/swing_chain_left.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/swing_chain_right.jpg

I also put the front fork together with the front wheel. You can see the small scratch built mountings for the fender. Fork legs are painted, yes Alclad II Pale gold, and the sliding parts are from a Museum Collection kit that I wasted the other year. They are made of turned brass. Lower ends of the forks are to be detailed further and Brembo markings on the calipers will be painted black.

Hope you like it, and please post any ideas or comments.

Shayne; No they're not, as you probably guessed ;-) I just put them on the pipes to see how far back they would have to go to look good. I had to twist one of them to get the pipes in right angle when glueing. I'm thinking of connecting the two cans with some kind of rods so that they don't slide later on.
Thanks again for looking.

So I'm finally done painting the exhaust system. Or atleast very close to it. I have a few scratches near the right muffler to fix and some joints to paint where the front pipes meats the EXUP. I will also add some washers to the muffler brackets.
I finally fell for some Termignoni decals from the Dexter Models sheet wich seem to have a very high quality.

Ok, so it's time to start the assembly and get a move on with this build. Today I'll give you pics of the finished engine and swing arm assembly and tomorrow I'll hopefully post picture of the naked bike fully assembled.

What's new on the engine? I've added throttle cables. These would go into a box underneith the tank on the real bike but that won't fit so I've stuck them away at the clutch cover. On the left side you can spot my most expensive piece of plastic. I had to buy a new mold tree to get the sprocket cover that I've misplaced...10 USD plus shipping... Lucky I needed some primer... I sprayed it Alclad II Jet Exhaust, covered it partly with some SMS CF and put some Model Factory Hiro rivets where there was originaly molded in ones.

Looking through a R1 service manual I found loads of extras that I would have made if I had the manual when I began the build. Now I'll stick to an extra radiator hose on the left side and to rebuild the clutch (not visible here).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/engine_done_left2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/engine_done_left.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/joelwideqvist/R1%20tuner/engine_done_rearright.jpg

I finally assembled the rear swing arm and I think it turned out just dandy! Caliper got some rivets installed on the top side and I then glued the brake disc and caliper in place on the rimb using super glue. To get the right fit with the tire I had to make a spacer out of styrene rod. Looking at the right side you can see that I've drilled the screw head down into the rimb and I will later cover it with a plastic bolt.

The fender is painted Metallic Grey (same as the tank) and then I added some CF in the middle. I pinned it down with some rivets.
Brake line is .6 mm fishing line painted gun metal.
Chain guard got some phillips head bolts as fastners.

First of all, thanks for the compliments!

Then about fishing line. In my opinion the vinyl tubing supplied by Tamiya is way to thick. I would say that the meassurements for the different bike lines would be something close to this, throttle: .4 mm, brake- and clutch .6 mm. The idea about fishing line is that it comes in so many dimensions. You have the both mentioned but also .2 mm for instance that I use for electronic wiring.
Second thing is that the fishing line can be painted any color you īlike. Tamiya leaves you with black...
Hope that clears it?!

The radiator hose on this build is made by Sakatsu but I know there are other brands as well. Try "mesh" in the search engines at your after market detailing shop and you'll find them.

Test fitting at its best but today I got beat. With all the stuff mounted on the swing it wasn't possible to get the exhaust system in place with the engine in position. Tried a lot of different angles but finally I had to surrender and split the exhaust system at the EXUP.

Result of all the trouble was that almost every loose part of the engine fell off and all the radiator hoses as well. Have a lot of touching up when it comes to scratches after me trying to force the swing into position (Why do you do that :screwy: :screwy: )

Hopefully I have some pics of the naked bike up by the afternoon.
