As i'm new to this forum let me begin by introducing myself;
My name is Erik i'm 21 years old and this project is my second car model i will be building.
I completed this first model (which is a VW Golf) about 3 months ago, and decided that i could try making a wide body version of it.
This idea started when i saw the website of Rieger Tuning, they had a wide body kit for the golf, which looks awesome. (in my oppinion :smile: ) http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/golf%20wide%20rieger.jpg
So, enough talk, lets show some pics :iceslolan
This is my first model i built.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20standard/DSC00040.JPG
I bought the same model to start the wide body conversion with.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20standard/DSC00047.JPG
The front bumber was already finished before i thought of making pics of it :banghead:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/DSC00050.JPG
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/DSC00048.JPG
The body must be smooth and clean, so i smoothed out the rear hatch and door handles
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/DSC00052.JPG
As with the front bumper i used the original bumper as a mould sort of...
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/DSC00053.JPG
Then filled her up with polly putty and started grinding.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/DSC00055.JPG
The rear bumper is atached to the body and the wide body is taking shape
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/DSC00063.JPG
After a bit :rolleyes: of work this is how it looks.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/DSC00003.JPG
It still needs details like air intakes, but that i will do tomorrow.

A small update, no pics on the progress but some ideas i would like to share:
The hood;
i'm thinking of making this with a carbon fibre look. But as i have seen in another thread i will need an airbrush of some sort to pull this off, as i dont own one i will need to buy it or borrow it *i'm pondering on this one :P*
The rims;
I would like to have rims that are almost the same as the one rieger tuning uses
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/golf%20wide%20rieger.jpg
but as i have not seen one's similar to those my insterests also go out to these
http://www.toms.nl/cars/f/fuji19209.jpg
thats it so far for my small update. I'm going to sleep now :sleeping:

The Rallye Golf ain't as wide as the Rieger one. This wide body tuning is kind of old school in Germany, it was popular and modern in the 80s. But nevertheless, nice model.

It may look like that one but as this project is only inspired by the Rieger bodykit, it can have many similarity's with other bodykits. It will not be a complete look-a-like ;) This way my creativity is stimulated and it will be my own bodykit [EDIT] or did you mean the pic of the actual rieger tuned one? [EDIT]
joeclaw; thanx for showing me these rims
They indeed look a lot like the one rieger uses especially the bbs rs II, if i paint the inner part black it is a perfect copy.
I only hope these will be available in The Netherlands cause i love those rims :worshippy:

1: Welcome to AF :wave:
2: Good job so far on your project. I like all kind of VWs (who had guessed :rolleyes: ) and I'll be following it.
I wish you good luck for the sanding. Seems that you'll have a lot to do.

As i had a lot of things to do the last 2 days i did not have time to continue modeling :disappoin and i am away for the next weekend.
But i have bought some new stuff for my project and the pictures will be up tommorow :smile:.
One of the things i have bought is a tamiya BMW 320i GR5 Racing "Jagermeister" kit
http://www.toms.nl/cars/t/tam24269.jpg
which have the perfect rims for the Golf and i am thinking of also using the engine of this kit, more details on this will be posted soon.
And VWman; i will be making these sideintakes (with a little personal twist to them) along with some other creative intakes and thingies :icon16: .

Theres more than one way to build a widebody. He chose the putty method. I personally have never seen the method you posted before.
If he wants to do it the putty way, then let him. Its his model, not yours.

I do agree, He has done a very nice putty job on this one. Much better than i could have out of that blob of putty.
But, that is a very nice tutorial for making a widebody, Never seen it either. Thanks for the link bill, nice to see you good for something else than being critical! :lol2: J/k

(^^ i asked were he finds this kit in dutch hehe)
I bought this kit at Techno Hobby De Wit in Zwolle, bought it in a sale for 8 euro :naughty: but it is also available at toms i think.
bill_kustomz; As i am new to moddeling, the putty was my way of doing a widebody. I started this model before i noticed AF, so i had no one to give me tips on how to do a widebody. And luckely this way turned out great for me :biggrin:
The update:
As you can see, The rough edges of the fenders have been sanded away. The only thing it lacks are the side-intakes.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage2/DSC00007.JPG

http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage2/DSC00010.JPG
Getting the shape symetrical was a difficult task, but as you can see it worked out well
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage2/DSC00011.JPG
The front bumper is almost finished now, the air intakes are done and it only needs some further sanding to finish this part.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage2/DSC00015.JPG
The support for the front bumper is a piece of the rear wing, but as my camera failed to work after making these pictures :banghead: i could not make some nice shots of this part. But it will be similar as the one rieger uses.

Thanks for the comments.
I have thought about making my hood cf style but i'm not totally convinced about it, i think i will go for the hood lip and making the hood smooth (german style :icon16: ) and no cf on it.
What do you guys think; cf or bad look and smooth?
Also the rear wing is giving me probs :banghead: as i need to make it from scratch but its beginning to take shape at last. tommorow or so new pics will be up.

ok this is totally not cool, the budget cam i temporaraly use is a total crap cam. the pics of this cam are the worst i have ever seen :banghead:, so i will not post them as you could see nothing on them. So i must wait till my broken cam is fixed en shipped back :disappoin .
But i have thought out how i would like to have this model.
These are the things i have in plan:
* a bmw 320 i Engine
* custom made sparco seats
* german style clean hood
* tinted windows
* bigger exhaust tip
* convert to rear wheel drive
* wide body that resembles the rieger one (almost done)
* The rims from the bmw model, these will be painted black on the inside
* maybe some lowering
* dashboard will be altered or i will do a dashboard swap
plus more things along the way.
feedback is welcome.
greets
Erik

* a bmw 320 i Engine
* custom made sparco seats
* german style clean hood
* tinted windows
* bigger exhaust tip
* convert to rear wheel drive
* wide body that resembles the rieger one (almost done)
* The rims from the bmw model, these will be painted black on the inside
* maybe some lowering
* dashboard will be altered or i will do a dashboard swap
plus more things along the way.
feedback is welcome.
greets
Erik

putting the bmw dashboard in golf's or kadett's was a common tuning in the 80's so maybe a good idea for your golf

I was indeed thinking about that. I wil testfit the dashboard to see how it looks.
But the dash of the 320i is rather clean because it is a race car, but i will have a look

Very, very nice. The only problem I seen was on the right front fender, it seems more of a curve than the other three. Maybe I'm wrong, but either way, very nice golf. Nice job!

It does indeed look like that on the photo, but i think it's because of the angle the shot is taken in, i think :dunno:
And after those shots, i sanded the body again to get better curves and more symetry.

Hi I'm new to this forum and just picked up this hobby again after about 10 years. This is a great community and I'm learning so much about this stuff with the internet. It makes a huge difference!
Anyhow I just ordered this same MkII GTI kit and was just wondering (since there seems to be a few VW fans here) if anyone noticed that the engine in the kit is actually an 8 valve with the 16V insignia?
I think I am going to try and alter the existing engine in the kit to a 16V cylinder head and "4 banana" intake using some styrene and wire.
Has anyone seen a thread here on intercooler plumbing? I didn't see one on the FAQ's

Hi and welcome to AF :cheers:
As for the 8v or 16v thing; as far as i know it seems to be a good replica of the engine, if i understand you correctly the cylinder head isn't the one from a 16v but i have found this pic of the cylinder head and it seems to be the same
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Tuning%20engine/reference%20pics/cylinder%20head.jpg
i do know the the exhaust manifold (if i'm right :rolleyes: ) isn't correct.
But it's always good to detail an engine even more :icon16:
I was surfing the net when my eyes suddenly spotted a pic of a rieger tuned golf and luckely it was the same as i use as an example :)

http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Real%20rieger/Golf%20wide%20rieger%20blue%20scissor%20back.jpg
It's the only one i have seen besides the example one on there site,
i could now also use this one.
One thing i will copy from this is the colour, i realy like the color :ylsuper: so finaly i can go to the shop and buy some paint. The mirrors also do seem mighty fine with this one.

Another update:
As i stated earlier, this build is inspired by rieger.
But as i continue to work on the body i am becoming more and more attracted to completely reproducing it instead of "rieger is just an inspiration".
So the body itself will be a fairly (if not completely) accurate reproduction of the rieger gto bodykit.
The hood and front bumper will only be a little different .
So here are the new detailing thingys :icon16:
First off, i made the rear wing completely from scratch,
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4102.jpg
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4103.jpg
It still does'nt fit right, but a bit of sanding and it should fit.
The sideintakes are done and i'm very happy with the results, cause they are completely made out of putty.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4101.jpg
The line you see on top of the intake will be stretched, but first the door needs some adjustments.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4099.jpg
The rear bumper now has the shape it needs.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4104.jpg
I made the lower part of the bumper a little narrower so the wheels are more exposed if you see it from the rear. :smokin:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4113.jpg
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4114.jpg
The fender flares where dremeled :uhoh: out so the body could stick lower to the ground.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4108.jpg
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4109.jpg
Here you can see how low it can go now :ylsuper:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4125.jpg
And here are some overall progress shots.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4116.jpg
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4119.jpg
http://www.xs4all.nl/~brendel2/darc/Golf%20wide%20body/Stage3/DSCN4120.jpg
The body still needs some putying to remove the scratches and some fine sanding to remove the bumps.
The sideskirts will also be made completely from scratch but that's for the next update.
Good and bad comments are welcome as i'm still in the learning fase :p :icon16:

those are Mk1's ;)
I know, this was just to give some reference, the gto bodykit is very similar for the 2 first gen. BTW it's very hard to find pics of widebody golf's.
As for the model, i think the front fenders needs more work, the rieger one have more sharp edges, and the front bumper ends need to be extended to line up with the fenders.
Any progress of fitting the bmw engine ?

Finding pics of a widebody golf is indeed difficult, but i have found a rieger GTO in a dutch tuning magazine :naughty: (it's actualy an VW corrado but the bodykit is almost identical) and it got some very good reference pics cause it is a 6 page fotoshoot :smokin: .
The front fenders need some work as does the front bumper.
But the front bumper is far from finished so i'm first going to make the sideskirts :iceslolan .
