I have 3 tests and a presentation this week, so not a lot of progress yet. But I had to take break today so I got started on my custom. It'll be good practice for my Spoon Sports S2000 racer, so I chose to make a fastback S2000. I'm going for phantom look, so it will be real simple and sleek, with no crazy body work, looking like it was just driven off the Honda showroom floor. Mostly.

The mods will include the fastback, of course, and realignment of the trunk shut lines; a new front and rear bumper, and a little sideskirt action. All a bit more aggressive, but not complex. I do not want to take away from the S2000's already subtle, but agressive lines, nor do I want it to look like something Honda would never build. It will be a Volvo red, painted with touchup paint, and the wheels are undecided, possibly Aoshima's NT03's. Other, incedental mods will creep up, so don't sweat it.

And no, this one won't have a motor, sorry. Unless someone wants to send me one for free!

Great project! Are you taking inspiration from the Mooncraft S2000? If not here's some pics to help you with your design.

According to this picture the old lines on trunk lid are still in place (to me it seems like it is not a lid, but just a different type of roof cover) OR it the lines for the new lid.

DJPaul - You're right. The Mooncraft part is actually just a hard top that goes to the rear of the car. I have a pic of it open, and the stock trunk lid opens below the Mooncraft one. However, though my inspiration was that, my idea is to make it as if Honda started making a S2000 coupe, sort of like the MG coupes in the '70s.

DJPaul

Sounds like a great idea.
Keep it updated.

Edit:
PS Are you planing on making the lid opening?

Paul.

A little work this week-end, since it rained out my autocross. Stupid rain. Anyway, it's coming together and here it goes.

1. After boxing in the fastback's shape with plastic (see the first pic in the thread) I filled the corners with putty. That way, I could sand it and would have more material to work with. That worked alright until I went to cut the rear window; the plastic separated from the putty and I had to CA it back together and sand it all smooth again.

2. I added the integral spoiler, and a fillet of putty.

3. Sanded it all smooth and pretty, and laid out the windows and the shut lines.

4. I cut out the rear window. The side window, since it is a complex(ish) curve, I drilled a series of holes along the line I drew for it.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/75086S2000Fastback05-med.jpg

Cutting it all out, done. Not really happy with the shape of the side window, I was hoping it would curve up a little more on the bottom edge. I will probably add some plastic to it to get the shape right, but then, I might not.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/75086S2000Fastback06-med.jpg

The Aoshima S-parts wheels might be too big. We'll see. I'll have to get them in to see to be sure. I probably won't do any work on the bumpers and the like until I get them. However, I am thinking I'd be better off using some smaller wheels (like the stock S2000 of MF08's that come with the kit) to keep with the factory theme.

Another thing I've considered: using a metal gas cap like from the ol' skule days, but 1. I'm afraid it'll look too much like a Viper and 2. won't really go well with the modern trend of the car. It's sort of looking like a modern S600 hatch, just like the normal S2000 looks like a modernization of the S600 roadster, and I like that, so I'll probably stick with it.

Thanks for looking.

Freakin badass!!! Keep the stock wheels!
Your ability to fab up that whole fastback and even cut the windows out is amazing!
Are you going to replicate that blue racing fastback on the previous pages(with respect to paint/wheels/markings???

Lovin the build up! I was pondering the fastback for my S2k but decided on a different approach and all before I planned entering the contest. I am really anxious to see the out come off this since I still may build one like it down the road.

That looks great!
Looking at yours, and of course the Spoon etc 1:1 versions, I really like the fastback conversions. In my opinion, they bring out the retro elements in the styling - with the fastback they really smack of the S800 Fastback's styling.
Very nice!

Ok, now, why wasn't I informed of this thread? Looks great will. Best scratchbuild we've seen from you yet, maybe even better than the fd.

willimo
03-18-2004, 01:39 PM
Personally I think this is a much better scratchbuild job than my FD. The FD isn't all that great, it's been frustrating from the start. This one on the other hand, is going together like Legos. Man I miss Legos. One of the malls in Boston has a Lego store; I always make my girlfriend take me when I visit.

Home sick today, so pardon the random thought. Time to take some pics, but none really worth sharing. But I'll share one anyway. I've done the scratch work for the interior. It still needs some putty work (Any tips on sanding in those tight corners and whatnot?). It's pretty plain, because I don't really know what else do do with that space and 'cause clean is the order of the day on this one. You'd be surprised how much work went into making the rear space. And bracing! The thing is braced up better than a building. Over construction. Better than making it weak, I guess.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/75086S2000Fastback09-med.jpg

I'm kinda tossing around the idea of putting a spare back there, but I doubt I will. The factory wouldn't do something like that. But If I use a set of rims I got 5 of, I might. There will be a brace linking the tops of the struts, undecided if it will be just one bar across or also have cross braces under.

So, any tips on sanding those tight spaces and corners and making look all smooth at all the seams? I need 'em.... And any ideas on how to separate the space behind the seats and the trunk area? Should I do more or less than what I have already?

That look's awesome man!!!, Try using a sanding stick or a small dremel bit by hand, one of the sanding part's, Thats what I did on my stang to get the back all smooth..

03-18-2004, 02:02 PM
great work on the interior i know what you mean by it bieng a pain to sand down in the corners I myself had lots of trouble doing this when i removed the back seats of my fd. take one of those paint miking stick and cut it lengthwise in half, then fold a piece of sandpaper over the edge and hold it in place, now drag back and forth. ill do a picture if you need it good luck! - justin

Will...looks clean and factory. will this be the race car edition, or just a factory car? Honestly, a clean simple 1 strut bar to keep it factory will work.

willimo
03-18-2004, 05:35 PM
Thanks for the words. This is gonna be a factory car, not the race one. Practice for the race one.... And the fastback racers are a little different in shape, and a lot different in other details. Oh well.

By the way, anyone got a spare NSX motor? I'm considering making this a... S2000R or something nutty like that. I figure the fastback's gotta be a counterweight for something... why not two extra pistons up front? Man, I shouldn't stay home from class like this anymore... I waste entirely too much time.

86_SR5
03-18-2004, 05:38 PM
Two ITR motors cut and glued together for a mugen f1 v8 would work better than an NSX motor. I have the block, it needs work, it will be going in one of my civics.

Dang...you are a brave man! That's a really nice project you have there!
Just one thing, though..I wouldn't go for the 5th wheel in the back..that'd be to Viper-ish, if you know what I mean...

03-23-2004, 11:18 PM
So I did some work on my S2000, made up an engine for it. It's Honda's... err, all new V6 for the Honda S2000R.... It's made up of parts from the JGTC NSX engine, the intake box is from the RX-7 R1 and a peice of tube (the unpainted white - it will be Kevlar decal). The headers and exhaust are going to be a pain.....

Comments? How unexpected was this, from the purist?

Willimo, looks real nice...Id have liked to see ya cut chop putty and slap together a mugen f1 v8 from two itr motors, but that's me. anyway, keep updating us, this looks very promising, as far as headers, that's easy, squuezy, lemonizy!! :D Now, for your race version, isn't it turbo? I havent mastered building turbos from styrene myself, but am sure there are those of us who can do it real good. and with what youve done to this s2kR, you can do it Will, it may take you all day loong!
