Yo where did you get the Milliput 2 part putty? I've been looking for sum but had no luck finding any.
chrismcgee
10-16-2003, 05:55 PM
again it was from a local hobby store, wasnt realy too impressed with it, bit like using blue tack, couldnt realy shape it well enough unlike my humbrol putty which is soft and a lot like toothpaste. you can shape it easy b4 it starts to set. which is cool, i am looking to put in an big order to humbrol, for a box of 24 "precision polly cememnt" bottles coz they are always getting clogged, plus i wanna order a box of the putty to save me money, i get through so much of that stuff

Yet another completely insane puttied up project from you chrismag. This is quite a wild idea, can't wait to see it finished. How about you do something different for the exhaust? Like a large rectangular port with rounded edges, with both pipes meeting in it and exiting through it? Smack it right in the middle. What'll the interior be like?
chrismcgee
10-17-2003, 05:03 AM
centre exit never even crossed my mind, but i think its definately the way im gonnna go. will have to look at my materials to see what the best way of producing the box would be. cheers dude,

I like the concept...
But to me the 'tip' is really tall...
Maybe a little taller then your opening...
I know how hard it is to do something different, I 'm trying to make a boxster style tip for a custom New Beetle project.

Looks nice, as you said you have some impurities in the putty, but nothing like a little sanding to do the trick huh? I have a ? for you. To make it easier on yourself, why don't you start out with 60grit to shape, 150 to contour, 240 to smooth, and work your way up in the paper till its smooth as glass? That's what I do and mine comes out descent.

I was looking at the pics and there was something that I didn't like...
I think it's the fact that there are no panel lines!!!
In real life, even the most massive bodykits have some panel lines, some structure...The fact that your widebody is literaly all over the car(you can call it the one-off car  ) do no justice to the hours you worked on the car!
Think at least about having some lines between front bumper and front wings and the same for the rear!!!
However,it's a good work!
Just my 2 cents for the hours spent on this model!
P.S:Also because of the very smooth lines your body kit has the car might look better without a wing!(Something commonly done to classy RX-7s)

Its looking good, like you said it has some impurities but thats ok, nothing big! I do agree with Mythos though and maybe you should scribe in a panel line for the front and back bumpers. It will give the car that extra nudge toward perfection! Good work so far!:bigthumb: Can't wait to see it painted:iceslolan!

lookn good shazza... but you really need some panel lines in there :D
chrismcgee
10-22-2003, 06:47 AM
i always do my panel lines last of all, that way i can guarentee that the depth is always the same all round and not different from over sanding.
so there was always gonna be some just not at that stage yet.
the exhast is meant to hang down a little as i wanted the rear to have a diffuser look, there was a slight miscalculation on my part when building the exhaust, it was meant to be 20mmx5mmx20mm, but i ended up making the top pieces the total size and not the inside size and now its 20x7x20. oh well. i dont think this is gonna be my last custom exhaust so expect them to get better.
There is a rear wing on there i just didnt want it to be too big as i wanted to keep a gentle smooth look to it, im sure the final colour will bring this all together.
i used a very heavy grade paper to shape it initaly but in the final stages it does more harm than good in the smooth flowing parts.
i start with 60 grit heavy grade oxide paper. then when im happy it goes to the wet and dry paper. its all good stuff.

well i took all my inspiration from the jgtc. the front end is styled off of the toms supra, maybe paint will change your opinion, but the fact is i just wanted to try it.
the panel lines are going to break up the body a lot, and having a dark paint scheme will hide the sheer size of it.
its purely a challenge to myself as i get bored of finishing box stock kits in one day. as i proved with my 24hr build of a R33.
i already have a box stock rx7, and also have a ltd ed bomex rx7 to build and just wanted to get back into puttying.
and it does seem your the only one to not like it.
yes i myself think its looking overly bulbous but it is not yet finnished and there are to be further body mods to break it up and give it a more evil look.
if i had access to a cnc machine i would design all my body kits in 3d cad and have them machined which would get all the detail i would want but at the moment i will just have to use my hands and a scalpel.
Please dont reply to my posts if you have crap like that to say, i mean, thats why the syndicate left, he only ever had shit to say about anything. this is a supportive group. i dont ever recall slagging off your work and believe that i should keep destructive comments to myself.
in what ways would you contructively improve this then? without childish comments such as bin it?

i first made strips of styrene card and glued them inside the arches. when they had dried i began building up putty over the arches a layer at a time. until i had the desired depth. once that was reached i becan sanding the putty till i had the contours i needed. i keep adding putty as and when needed.
hope this helps

have you taken the wheel to a plumbing store and tried to see if there are any plastic drainage pipes that are of the same diameter as what you need, then you could just cut small circles of it and glue them on?

I kind of agree with bah humbug, actually, but I think it's certainly a nice model. I can't throw putty worth a damn, and I could never smooth it to look symmetrical like you have done. So for the amount of work you've done and the skill you have, good job! The car just isn't my style either.
But whatever, I don't actively dislike it. So I have some constructive comments. I think someone said before that the exaust hangs out too low under the rear bumper and I agree, cut into the bumper and mount it where the license plate will go and it'll look trick. And the other thing, but it may be too late to deal with now, you could stop the bodywork behind the front wheel arch a few mm before the door (now you'd have to cut thru gobs of putty so it may be impossible) and add some thin styrene to the contour, so that it would look like a vent in the wide body work. You said you've taken inspiration for JGTC cars, and if there was a vent there it would be keeping in with that theme. Just a couple things I thought of. Otherwise, it's lookin quite good.
