well i have just started the basic shaping or the convertible rx7 wide arch, its looking pretty rough at the mo, but i have to build it up to more than i need before i can start to remove and shape it all. so this is not its final shape!
Colour is gonna be jet black with chrome 19" rims i think, the wheels will come right out to the edge, and i will be building a hood cover, gonna save the engine for another time and build this kit kurbside.

hmmm cant see pic upload or manager bit, so will try later.

btw the chassis is off my carbon rx7, new onw will be custom!

hey mate!
Which series rx7 you making? Just asking since Series 6+ never came convertible, so I'm assuming you're just chopping around a bit...

Nonetheless, sounds good. Wide arch rx7 would look insano

chrismcgee
10-09-2003, 04:52 AM
not sure which series, but its the tamiya rx7 r1 kit, although im not gonna be fitting the engine!.
the major work has been done now i think, just gotta work out a way to incorporate the front lip which is part of the chassis, lots of head scratching there.
make no mistake that this baby is wide! and looks great as a convertible, its over 10mm wider or 5 mm each side.
that works out to be about 127mm in real life each side!
lots and lots of sanding to be done to make it look right.
will try and post pics onto the new and less user friendly system

gonna go with a cali pimp style i think, black paint work, or maybe a flip paint to accentuate the lines of the body.

i am considering making a veilside style s2000 soft top cover, still gonna keep the passenger seats in the rear, its all gonna fit over the rear parcel shelf to keep it smooth and sleek, will be rubbing the car down agian in a min, am on the 3rd aplication of humbrol putty so far, should imagine this is gonna take some time, the front bumper is my biggest challenge as the chassis uses a lip as the support.

i have a feeling tho that the front wheel arches rest on the underside of the front quarter panels so i might just chop the whole front end off

Chris! Glad I caught ya before you finished. Listen, when I read this and saw you were considering black, something clicked on and then burnt out in my mind (needed a new 75-watt bulb). Nevertheless, heres a lil inspirtaion, if you decide to do your car like this, and need any info on it, I can get it, ya see I just read about this car, today, and I thought, that'd be a sweet drop-top. So heres some pics.

dude that is totaly the coolest rx7 i have ever seen, and is now my inspiration. cheers man, anything extra would be great. gonna have a go at making a replica of that front bumper.
and find a way of making similar decals for the sides. cheers again, its scary how similar mine is to that.

10-11-2003, 01:42 PM
Well, that's pretty much all the pics of the car I have, but if you need such info as rims(rear rims are like 19 1/2'' wide!!!!), engine mods, paint and such I'd be glad to help out.

10-11-2003, 02:44 PM
cheers dude, im after inspiration for the front bumper at the moment, its gotta be wide and deep. any ideas?

86_SR5
10-11-2003, 03:05 PM
Hmmm. Well, all I could suggest would be sculp it from putty and styrene. I know its a C-West front bumper, Protech performance metal widebody kit; I've never really built too many things from scratch, except my Lambo I'm rebuilding (incorporating 2 big ass turbos, big intercooler, ram air, NSX head lamps, pointy front bumper, etc) Looking for some deep dish rims, or will make my own.

10-12-2003, 09:24 AM
cool well i am gonna draw inspiration from a few places i think. mainly from c west, veilside and jgtc. gonna get started tonight when my girlfriend goes home. hehehehe.
she put a limit on my modeling, hahhaaha, altho she did take me to see the new italian job. very good film. loved it :evillol:

Sorry, IMO it looks like some 2f2f junk. Waste of a nice car if you ask me.

But hey, we all think differently and in your eyes it's one of the coolest things on the planet. So like Tonioseven says build for yourself, nobody else matters!

I'm just felt like speaking my opinion, that's all. :smokin:

I can agree with the fact that it looks like something outta that movie, however, all those movie cars looked, stupid (even the skyline with them stripes!) this car would probably sucka punch all the other cars, and kick the shit outta them while they were on the ground!

in the end these cars were around b4 2f2f, and to be honest i love modified jap cars, modified jap bikes. i love anything that can be modded.
my first gift from my grandad was a tool set aged 2, it was a saw and screw driver set (all metal) the first thing i did was take the saw to the new coffee table. ever since then i have been changing things to make them work and look better.
jap cars are easily modded and look and work great. and i also happen to be a big supporter of the right to modify.

so long live 2f2f cars

What The Hec Is That At Least Throw A Coat Of Primer On It

hmmm, you dont do much scratch building do you??? coz if you did then you would know how much re working of the shape that you have to do, and if you keep putting on primer then you loose detail, primer is the last stage b4 paint and for removing minor impurities. it takes a long time to shape the body.

So if your so good why dont you make one better and with 50 coats of primer on it? :evillol:

well here are the latest pics, have spent a few hours sanding, and still have loads more hours to go. Gonna drill out the fuel filler cap so i can concentrate on shaping more then add it later. Starting work on the front fender in the morning. going to use high build primer on the sides to remove any scratching and minor imperfections when its ready (considerng my nemisis skyline took 2 months before i was happy im not holding my breath for a swift completion, lol)
but its flowing quite well at the min

i think it looks hot know but what are the gold plates on the light

chrismcgee
10-13-2003, 12:23 PM
that is just masking tape, i used it on the doors too, its stops any excess filler drying into the cracks or on door/lights.

I have made quite a few custom putty kits and the biggest problem is getting putty in unwanted places, the masking tape stops it adhering and makes your life a lot easier.

That model is fantabulous

Im using putty for the first time soon, do you have any idea what i should try doing first off and then what i should move onto?

What Putty do you use?

And what sandpaper do you sand it with :)

Thats all for now thanks for your help!!

ps. How much putty is on that kit?

well i am now tempted to do more of a full widebody kit, as the car is building up a lot more. so it willl be getting better.

so far 1 tube of humbrol model putty has been used and i have started the second one.

tips for building a good kit is forward planning, have reference pics, start small and keep adding. i used 400 grit paper to shape, then go to 1000 grit to make smooth

use poly card to create the limits for your kit then use the putty to work them into the body

here are the latest pics of the front bumper, the styrene tubing is to be sanded flush with the body, and trimmed off at the back, its being used to create a neat and clean air duct and also as a handy spacer for the lower lip.just waiting or the putty to dry now, as there is a lot i should imagine its gonna be a few hours. oh well. at least i have a front bumper now. :evillol:

Awesome model, i envy your skill but is this model metal?

Where can i buy this type of putty online?

Thanks!

chrismcgee
10-15-2003, 04:44 AM
nope, the model is a plastic tamiya one. Not sure where you can buy the putty online from as i pick mine up from my local hobby store.
Humbrol model putty is very good and i know fotw uses it and im sure hiroboy does too. its quite cheap but takes ages to dry when you put it on thick like i did on the bumper. but its easy to sand and shape, but can be difficult to get realy smooth. May look into using a fine body filler.

Gonna go test the front end now to see if its all set.

Also i made the front hood vent last night, and for the first time used milliput two part putty, damn that stuff is sticky, seems that its got some very good aplications. so will be trying to sand that stuff now.

Gonna post pics of the hood for ya in a bit :evillol:

ok here are the latest pics of the front and the hood, more filling work to be done on the nose but most of the shape is there for a first sanding. i love the look of those air intakes.

i get the feeling that this is gonna look smooooooth when its done. :evillol:
