I have a new desktop wallpaper today - an early digital sketch of P1 done by McLaren's lead exterior designer, Paul Howse. It was shared today by Car Design News as their 'Photo of the Day'.

It has been a while since I was here and miss all you guys! Just curious, are you guys really considering tracking the P1 like the F1?
500 models! I think you're going to need a bigger boat (server!)!:screwy:
Anyway, love the P1.

I have considered it with the P1, but it would be an extra challenge and I already stay busy enough balancing life and the F1 pursuit.
I've had people send me 12C VINs of cars they have seen around the world and have been quick to tell them that I am not even going to attempt to keep up with them. :grinno:

Like Erik says, it would be a full time job on top of a full time job on tracking the F1's on top of the normal full time jobs we do on top of being parents [in my case] so, if there were more hours in the day, and hands attached to my arms, I may contemplate it. :)

Some shots of the inside - it'd be great to see it up close / clearer.
Sounds glorious too, bassy rumble that hopefully turns to high-pitched screamer when pushing through the gears :)

Ignore the interior in the P1 mules - they are fitted with unfinished parts from the 12C.

Continuing the theme of my semi-charmed-kind-of-life, another amazing experience came my way at the Beverly Hills reveal of the P1 last night in that I was the only non-McLaren employee who was blessed with the opportunity to sit inside the P1. At some of the previous showings in more intimate settings quite a few have been allowed to at least have a look, but not many have gotten in so I was told. Last night they had planned to keep the door closed completely as there were just too many people to maintain control, but at one point Frank did open the car to share the interior with Jay Leno which resulted in what I'll describe as a bit of a kerfuffle.
At the end of the night I was waiting to say my goodbyes - the P1 had been pushed off its small stage and was even under the cover already when I was invited over to have a look, which then turned into "Go ahead and have a seat". Unbelievable and totally unexpected! :yikes:
It's amazing inside - just as cool as the outside with lots to take in and the real feeling that you're in something special. I think every surface inside is either satin finished carbon fiber or alcantara. Just beautiful! There is tons of glass - the visibility in most directions will be great. I was surprised to see the car does have a rear window - wasn't sure they'd preserve that with the roof scoop. It has a familiar feel to the 12C with wide outer sills and two seats centrally located, but no one could really confuse the two spaces. The P1 interior is all business and you'll know you are somewhere very special once inside. I certainly knew it! :grinyes:
Before you ask - no photos of the interior were permitted at all, and I don't know how to draw either. It was an honor to be invited over the threshold (aka: door sill) and I can't wait until the veil of secrecy is lifted and official pictures get released.
Here's a shot from last night - I'll have more later today:

My album of photos from last evening's P1 event in Beverly Hills is now up on Flickr. I have just finished running through it adding some captions - you can view it by clicking on the image below. :)

Not much in the way of "new" pictures as far as things people won't have seen, but there are two shots showing one of the roof flaps open which houses fillers for different fluids in the car. I think that is a great idea for reducing additional access panels on the painted sections of the bodywork.

Excellent Erik! You must have been well chuffed to have privaleged access to the car. I have to say I am very impressed with Mclarens traetment of the likes of you and me. Seeing as neither of us at the moment are potential clients (speaking for myself at least!) and yet they seem to go out of their way to help us out with our Enthusiasims. Many thanks to the likes of Henry.

The car has left North America and is headed for the Middle East next. I think the first opportunity to see a P1 in Canada will be after Pebble Beach at the end of the summer if they do another round of dealership tours like they did with the Spider after this past year's event.

Man, I'm so excited about the P1.
When I saw the first pictures of it, I have to admit I didn't like it very much, but the design has grown on me over the last few months, and now I think it's a beautiful car, with its very own identity. I'm certainly not an expert on aerodynamics, but you can tell there's a lot going on with how the air goes over, under and through the car. I'm also a big music fan, and my favourite albums are the ones that you don't like at first listen, but need some time too take in and grow on you. And I feel it's the same with the P1. I've also been reading at McLarenlife.com, and the people that saw the car say it looks even more impressive in real life, with a lot of details to take in. And that's one of the biggest reasons I'm drawn to McLaren: their obsession with details and how they combine them into clever ideas. I'm also someone who sees a lot of details in daily life, way more than average, and I like that there's a company that shares that obsession. I think it's safe to say a lot of people here will recognize that.
Unlike with the F1, I'm now old enough to see this all unfold from the very beginning and have followed the developments closely from the start. Can't way for Geneva.
There are people complaining that this won't be such a pure car as the F1, and that might be true, but the times have changed.
The F1 was about the last supercar to be made before computers/advanced electronic systems made their way into car design. And of course there's the ever tightening regulations by governments worldwide. Some good, some bad I guess. And I think you really have to see the P1 in that light of a changed world. I'm glad McLaren decided to make the F1 in the 90's.
They really did make the best pure driver's car they could back then, throwing everything they had at their disposal at it. And that became such a stunning machine: incredibly well crafted and engineered, and so far ahead that it took years for others to catch up to it's standards.
Yes, there are some other professional supercarmakers around nowadays, but I feel the performance of the P1 will be unlike anything before, which will also give it a legendary status. So instead of seeing the P1 as a succesor to the F1, I feel it's better to look at it as a new chapter.
The F1 will forever be the best pure car, from a time when such vehicles were allowed, while the P1 will be the best modern supercar, made with the best that modern technology has to offer.
By the way, I'm loving interior. It's beautifully minimalistic. The people that complain about it being too boring don't understand the McLaren philosophy. I always liked the understatedness of McLarens, it's refreshing and has an appeal of it's own. And McLarens are designed with the long term in mind: the interior of a Huayra is also stunning, but I think you quickly get tired of it, it may become too much rather soon. While the interior of the P1 is something that you will like more and more as time passes.
I also used to like Ferrari, but I seriously can't stand their attitude nowadays. And in my opinion, they totally lost the plot design wise. I can't stand that "rich bully" look. Modern Ferrari's look designed for pimps, but the front looks like it has to appeal to the Chinese market. Seriously, the front of Ferrari's always looks like a creature from traditional Chinese culture (F12/Chinese dragon for example). I have nothing against Chinese culture, let that be clear, but I don't want cars too look like that, certainly not Ferrari's. Such a shame. But anyway, I'm a McLaren fan in the first place.:grinyes:
Hope this was interesting to read for someone. :)

When I first saw the F1, I fell in love :eek2:
Waiting to see the P1, I was thinking that maybe I will replace my old love by a younger one.
Then I saw it and was not so convinced, I decided to wait to see the interior to take a decision.
Now I know !
F1, I love you forever.
Honestly the P1 is good looking car, certainly more powerful, efficient than the F1. But I prefer the philisophy behind the F1.
Back in the 90s, they made the best car in the world for 15 years, with three seats, luxury interior, room for luggage ... and I just like cars that way.
Time changes and I'm still stuck in the 90s :screwy:

Love the interiour simplicity (don't know writing) but it's very simple! I love it!
The material of the streering wheel is RACE also the Carbonfibre is the only material what McLren really have to use. Love it even the driver doesn't sit the middle. Hope this car can be competetitor to new Ferrari and Porsche. Really hope that.!

Rumour has it the P1 can lap the Catalunya circuit in Spain anywhere up to 6 seconds faster then a MP4-12C GT3. As awesome as this car is supposed to be I think its a big ask and would love to see some confirmation somewhere.
Kinda hoping this is true because thats pretty mind blowing-just imagine what it could do around the 'Ring then.....

The Catalunya lap time was reported by someone who previewed the car at the factory recently. One has to assume he was quoting what he was told accurately, but there's no independent confirmation available of the story at this point.

Are you talking about Montmelo Circuit, IDIADA Circuit or Castelloli Circuit?
There are lots of circuits here in Catalunya (a region in the N-E of Spain).

I agree with you F1 will stand forever as the purest driving machine on planet earth and P1 will start McLaren's new chapter. Let's hope it will set the new standard for years to come. Maybe 10-15 years like McLaren did with the F1 before.
For me only thing that went wrong on P1 is the lack of centre driving position.

Im guessing the P1 makes all of it time in the straights with its less downforce and much greater horsepower. Im sure it has a lot of downforce for a roadcar and handles very well but better then a MP4-12C GT3? Im trying to wrap my around that.
Im also guessing that there are people are here who probably know how true that claim is.

I'll be there next week for the Formula 1 tests. I'll interrogate the people who work there every day if that history is true.

With McLaren's F1 simulator, they don't exactly need to truck a P1 over to the circuit in Spain in order to gauge how quick it would be. They've likely run the virtual P1 on half the major circuits in the world already via that method before it was even shown in Paris last year.

Was looking at the unveiling at Geneva and Ron Dennis claims he drove the P1 10 second's faster than the record at Dunsfold better known Top Gear Test Track :screwy:
WTF
The best time officially is
01:13.8 Pagani Huayra, that means he went somthing like 01:03.8! and that means a race car driver would go even faster.. I just can not believe that! Can he afford to lie?!

I don't think he was lying. Someone on another forum made the joke that 'Perhaps no one has told Ron that the 12C has been beaten by anything else?' to which point he'd only need to be 10 seconds faster than the 1:16.whatever it did if we ignore the effort by the V8 Atom. Still hard to believe, but I'm not entirely sure they were being serious at that point. If they were being serious, then the car is seriously more impressive than I thought.

I think he meant that he beat the fastest time in the Star in a reasonably priced car segment, which means 1:32 (he didn't push obviously).
1:03 is not possible, that's five seconds faster than the track-only Zonda R and one of the best GT1 racecars - DBR9.

What a car!
Yesterday I went to Geneva, I have been invited to the McLaren stand to see the P1...simply awesome! took a video...
http://youtu.be/GE780JdHLtw
The car looks perfect, it is so compact and mean, looks like a racing car, yet it is very sexy. In race mode it is SERIOUSLY low, and has so much details to look at that you can stand in front of it for hours. Front nose is low and sharp, back is incredible, with that huge exhaust...the interior is business and very track oriented, seat is a proper racing car bucket seat, and thanks to that the seating position is perfect. To have those two piece of glass over your head has been a wise choice, because otherwise the cockpit would have been a bit dark and small, being the roof line lower than the 12c.
I am still thrilled.....awesome

I don't believe that rumor is true. XP12 is a pre-production car and in today's world there would be challenges selling a prototype to someone who is keen to drive it on the road, as Jay most certainly would be - especially in this litigious country. Typically when concepts or prototypes are sold here they don't include a title so they can not be registered. Generally they are for display purposes only and that's simply not Jay's style.
Jay mentioned to some of my friends that he'll be getting a yellow one like the one in Geneva but I simply can't see it being that exact same car. Later this year when his car arrives you can bet I will be remembering this story when I check the serial number on his P1. ;)

I just don't see how people can think the LaFerrari is better looking than the P1. IMO the Ferrari looks a bit odd and clumsy, especially the nose. The P1 is perfectly proportioned and sleek.
You guys think the P1 will be faster around circuits than LaFerrari? I certainly hope so, I'm tired of all the Ferrari fanboys claiming how the Ferrari is so much better. Hopefully the special Akebono brakes and prodigious down force will give it an advantage. Has Ferrari released their down force figures yet?
