Prepared 2 "soft" tires for the Laguna Seca. From reference it seems this kind of tire has been used

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P7060191.jpg

And decalized the tank cover to the tech 3. I need it to match the yellow on the front fender.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P7060193.jpg

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P7060195.jpg

It takes about an hour to do it. The decal overlaps in some point and I had to trim the front piece. Probably painting yellow and masking for black could achieve a better result, but I don't want to spend to much time on the Tech 3, something more on the laguna seca.

Some progress... fisrt of all some Laguna S. decal to see how they work:

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P7150196.jpg
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P7150194.jpg
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P7150193.jpg

Then the harder job.... as I found some spare decal on the decal sheet for Polini and NEC writing, to match the front fender yellow and decal yellow and to fix the tank I have masked the body with parafilm and airbrushed the decal with pale yellow. The masks were not very close to the decal borders to avoid the paint gap:
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P7150191.jpg

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P7150192.jpg
Masks removed....
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P7150197.jpg
and one decal broken.... :banghead: (I have to fix it...)

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P7150198.jpg

Afetr some cleaning with tothpick with some cotton and alcool and after polishing the fairing this is the result...

and tank
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P8080206.jpg

the L.S. decals are a nightmare. Every decal is an adventure, I cutted the black strips in the angle as they were too close. The side decal had the top edge rounded like the tank so I had to trim them (already wet... :banghead: ) to follow the black stripe.....

this has to be one of the sweetest build jobs for an M1 i have seen. Very welldone on the yellow, us modelers just have to be the most adaptive bunch of people there is,lol.

Superb work on the c/fibre, just like the real deal.

I begun to decalize the carbon fiber on the tail cowl. Tamiya leave that black but from references it's not so. A lot of "cut and sew"... For the moment the most important piece for shape a simmetry....

Very nice job! What was the bronze/sepia color you used on the exhaust? That looks to be the perfect shade. Nice job on the exhausts, it's something that is easily overdone.

Everytime I change the colors for painting the exhaust, I have no fixed rule. If I remember well I used alclad engine manifold and hot metal sepia. Stainless steel as a base and trasparents for shades....

This time I spent my time to replicate the seat texture. I wanted something like neoprene. I fixed a brass mesh to the seat and cover the seat with Tamiya liquid cement (the green one)
After a while the plastic has begun to melt... I thought "what a disaster..." I waited some time and removed the mesh, when the seat was dry I sended it a bit.... this is the result. It was painted with flat black and tire black

Ok. I was just asking about the sepia itself. I understand the mixing/overlap, as I love these bikes! The exhausts can really make these models stand out, as yours has!

BTW, I think the seat works! I like it!

Andrew59it - you are doing an excellent job at building these two kits. The exhaust detail and the decal work - both standard decals and carbon fiber - are excellent. What manufacturer (company) are you using for the 2K paint? I have Zero 2K clear but I'm interested in the paint. Also how did you paint the chain/sprockets? You are doing fantastic attention to detail - I just ordered the ST27 Laguna Seca decals - as for you tire choice of "soft" that is most likely correct. I have raced at Laguna Seca in the late 90's and although the track has been repaved it has only gotten smoother. The track temperature is also very good during the time of year the bikes come there so the track is very good on tires and the riders can make a soft last the entire race. Keep up the great work and the postings - John

andrew59it

Did you race at Laguna Seca....????? :eek2: I have to take my hat off....:p
Fantastic... Thanks for the compliments... 2K is unknown brand from an automotive shop. Some friend of mine use Lechler or Max Meyer. Zero is a good choice too, but hardner comes into clear bottle so after a while you may trash it..... Chain is simple. First the sprocket, then gun metal, masked the gun metal and airbrushed the gold but.... look at this:

Andrew59it - thank you for the link - I looked at it for the help. As for the paints - yes I use the Zero paints from Hiroboy but the shipping costs are very high to the USA. I was told by, I think it was, "Steve Nobel" that the Hiroboy paints are actually Leckler paints thinned and repackaged. Reference Laguna Seca - yes I was an AMA superbike racer from 1995 thru the end of 1998 before I was involved in a street accident where I was paralyzed. I still have many racing friends and enjoy watching the motorcycle racing in person and on the television. Thank you again for the chain painting link - I think you do the best paint work on the original plastic chain/sprocket that comes in the box. I have purchased several Top Studio chains but I find that the time to build one is very long. You also do an excellent job at painting the exhaust system - John

About 2K why not PPG? Is it not an american brand?

John18d

Andrew59it - thank you for the kind words - Yes, I have several friends that have helped me thru my injury - I also met with Wayne Rainey and Eddie Lawson at Willow Springs raceway in California back in 1999 and things have gotten much better since I returned to university here in Tucson. I have found that model building "scale replicas" has been very therapeutic and I am learning many techniques from this forum. Reference the link - Yes, I noticed it was yours. Reference PPG - yes I am very familiar with their paints - I used to use PPG paints on my superbike bodywork (panels/cowlings). The biggest problem to paints is that here we have to purchase big (973ml) quantities or larger - and many times the paint goes "off" before you can use it all. I wish I could find a shop here in the USA that would sell small volumes of PPG paint. When I used to paint the bodywork panels on my superbike I used the PPG Deltron system - urethanes like the Zero paints. I was trying to PM you but I cannot seem to get the forum site to do that. Keep up the great work - I look forward to seeing more of your skills at work - John

Fantastic work and a true inspiration to all Bike builders.

Just bought the Tamiya Tech 3 kit today myself, have three of the Tamiya FIAT M1's, one for Rossi, one for Lorenzo and one for Rossi cornering with the figure, going to try get a hold of that decal sheet with the fans faces on it (Laguna Seca is it?) so that will be another 09 M1 :)

Keep up the good work.

Some problems today....
After have placed the carbon fiber on the rear cowl, I begun to try a photocopied template of the S27 decal.
Completely wrong.... the decals don't join at the end of the cowl. So after this:
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/IMG_8745.jpg

I decide to try with masking tape. Very difficult pattern.... I airbrushed the black but after removing the tape I had in my hands something of orrible!!!! I didn't make a picture but really a shame....
So now I start again from here:

From my reference the right and left stripes join together at the end of the rear cowl (see the picture). The decals have a wrong shape in my opinion. The paint is an original FIAT 500 color, diamond white, but it seems to be not very different from tamiya pearl white.
Yes I know about tape and decal (sometime peel off even with clear on) but I had no choice, now I have another idea , I will begin with black decal and I will put on carbon fiber at the end. :)

John18d

Andrea - I have the "Lorenzo" decals. I see what you mean about the decals not fitting. A technique I use when I get a unique set of decals - I color photo-copy "zerox" the decals and then make a "masking tape" template to check the fit of the decals on the model so that I can determine where the decals do not fit correctly. I know it is a little late for you for that now, but it is a "technique" for other models. I do not do it for every model I build but I use it for models with decals that are rare or hard to find. I used it on a 2007 Assen "Fiat 500 Rossi" bike I did for a customer. Also If you have a color copy of the decal you can try to re-create it if the decal is no longer available. Thanks for the paint information - I have the Tamiya pearl white for that. You are doing an excellent job on this build so far and I can see you are a perfectionist. - John

Andrea - I just thought of another way to "mask" without using tape. If you cover the area you do not want paint to get on you can use "Microsol Mask" to cover the areas and the remove it when you are ready - that should come off without affecting the decal. - if anyone has had trouble with decals covered with "Microsol Mask" please let us know - John

Hello John, I didn't use the decal for now. I have only to make again the carbon fiber one, I used the tamiya template for reproduce them with SMS decals. Now as I have a sheet of black decal I'm thinking about to make them new scannering the original one and adjusting the rear portion....

Andrea - yes that's what I do for some decals - I scan them and make duplicates on decal paper and then I can reproduce some decals - also depending on your printer options you can "enlarge" the image some and then print the bigger decal and trim it to fit - John

I've got this kit and the decal sheet and am thankful that you are "blazing the trail" for my build. Great work so far and thanks again!

I have made the fork sensor with a copper tube of 1 mm with a 0,5 rod inside and a cutted top studio electric connector for the end.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P9190223.jpg

Now I will paint it clear red over silver and add carbon fiber decal for the lower section. It looks good installed....

Andrea - the GP sensor looks good but you must trim away some of the 1mm tubing so that the "rod" shaft extends down a little more - the way it is now there is no travel permitted by the GP sensor - John

Hello John this is a different sensor, it's the one you may see on the picture of the box. It has a carbon fiber shield for the lower section...

Andrea - that's very good attention to detail - I have never seen that type of sensor before with the outer covering. I'm not sure if that is not some type of shield for the sensor shaft. There is far more travel on the front forks than it would appear the sensor would allow. I have not seen this picture you have included the link for before. It is possible that it is a shield? I'm not sure though - looks like something out of carbon fiber. - do you follow the MotoGP racing? what do you think of Yamaha wanting Edwards to quit and retire? Also I hear that Yamaha "factory" Fiat team has gone back to the 2010 frames "chassis" - because the 2011 does not work well. The Tech3 team is stuck using 2011 frames for 2011 so far and Edwards and his teammate are struggling with good finishes.- Let me know what you find out about the sensor. - John

All the picture I have of Tech 3 depict the bike with that sensor.... someone else knows something more??

Andrea - how did you paint the "brembo" logos on the brakes? They came out so clear. When I try to do it it is not so clear and I end up using the decals - John

andrew59it
09-20-2011, 11:20 AM
It's a secret....
Not of course..... I use enamel for the base (gold) and acrylic for the writing. I use a small brush to fill the brembo logo, no problem if it's not neat. After 5-6 minutes with a cotton swab moistened with alchool I remove the paint in excess. At each step I rotate it. It's important the cotton swab is new and tough, if it becames soft it removed the paint into the logo.

John18d

Andrea - do you not have a problem with the alcohol removing the enamel paint?

andrew59it
09-20-2011, 11:49 AM
No John, the alcohol removes only the acrylic ( I mean the pink common alcohol)

John18d

Andrea - is that 70% "rubbing alcohol"

Today some time for the rear cowl. I made a mask with tamiya tape and used a masking tape for automotive:

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/IMG_8764.jpg

Now I have a good starting point. The black lines are good for the outer edge but not the inner. I have to retouch them.

painted and decalized the fork sensor. I have not good pictures....

I have finished to place all the decals (the picture is only for the front cowl) and finished the stand. Now the most delicate job: wash al the fairing parts to prepare them to 2K (hope to not remove some decals)

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P9260220.jpg

The wheel are translucent as the white is not solid and white is yellow-off white. Hope you like it...

Great work! Be carefull and dry your decals well befor you clear them with the 2K clear. What brand (2K) do you use?

andrew59it
09-26-2011, 02:23 PM
It's an italian brand not well known (I think) : DBS
My only problem is to clean well the surfaces decalized.... sometimes happened some small decal have been removed. Which method do you use to prepare the surface? Do you think is it possible to seal the decal under a thin layer of tamiya clear like x-22 and then cover with 2K?

John18d

Andrea - when I use 2K clear "Zero" paints - I spray "airbrush" a very light coat over the decals first and let them set up and dry well - overnight. Then I follow with thicker "wet" coats after that to achieve the thickness and gloss I want "2-3 coats". Then after that has dried for several days I lightly sand down the decal and paint lines carefully and then clean everything and spray "airbrush" a final wet coat to achieve the finish gloss. As long as I do not apply too heavy of a first coat nothing negative "lifting - crazing" will happen to the decals. - John

Thank John this could help, but my question is "how do you prepare the decalized surfaces before the 2K?"
There are fingerprints, decal glue etc, so "degrease" the surface is very important. Usually I try to wash the fairing with some cotton and soap but it's easy to scrap the smaller decal...
Anyone have any suggestions?:uhoh:

Well, i usually wash the decalized parts with a soft paintbrush, low warm water and dish wash detergent. I clean them with clear water. I use to blow imedaitlly just air by the airbrush, to dry the parts without water marks! I cover the parts and let them 1 - 2 weeks to dry. If you clearcoat them to soon and they ar still wet under the decals, you get some nasty bubbles. They will disappear in time but you will be forced to stop and wait.
This metod X 22 and after that 2 K clear i read for the first time in my topic :http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=1070670
I really don't know how well it works, but i will give this metod a try!

Hello
I read your topic and often happened to me to have the 2K peeled off with tape :banghead:
About x-22... the front yellow fender received this threatment. In the beginning I decided to paint all the fairing with x-22 because of the many decal on them, so I airbrushed the fender and the top tank. But after the first layer the fender was not very glossy so when I used 2K for the rear cowl I decided to give it a try and airbrushed the 2K over the x-22....
The result was fine, no bubble no holes and a smooth surface.
I think I will do the same for the front cowl, as someone had trouble with the chrome decal on it and 2K. So I will try to seal it with x-22 Cross finger!!!
