Thank John this could help, but my question is "how do you prepare the decalized surfaces before the 2K?"
There are fingerprints, decal glue etc, so "degrease" the surface is very important. Usually I try to wash the fairing with some cotton and soap but it's easy to scrap the smaller decal...
Anyone have any suggestions?:uhoh:
sorry for my late reply Andrea - when I have fingerprints - decal glue - water marks etc to remove, I use a mild soap("Tide" powder that is phosphate free)/"distilled" water mixed and gently wash the surface with a "cheese cloth" (cloth that does not leave lint on the surface) and then I dry it with 100% cotton pads (like the ones women use for applying cosmetics and removing nail polish). I never use anything but "distilled water" to wash the plastic with once I start painting with the primer, otherwise there are chemicals and minerals in the water that can damage the decals and interfere with the paint/clear process. I can PM a picture of what I use if you would like? I hope this is not too late to help you Andrea - These two scale replicas are looking very good and I really would like them to come out perfect. If you have to, try on the Tech3 first - if you damage the decals I can send you a replacement set of decals, as I have two of those kits and I will only build one as a Tech3 version. - John

Thank you John, I should have needed the decal some days ago, 2 layers of decal should have been perfect. I understand your procedure. Today I washed and cleaned all the fairings and they looks good. Tomorrow I will try with a thin layer of x-22 to seal the decal, expecially the chromed one on the front cowl and then I will procede with 2K....

These 3 days worked with 2K. First of all, as I thought, a thin layer of x-22 to protect the decals, expecially the chromed n. 5
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo351/andrew59it/WIP/Yamaha%20Tech%203%20-%202010/P9290222.jpg
Second day the first coat of 2K quite thick and the day after a second coat wet (like water)

Andrea - those body pieces look beautiful - it is like glass. Don't worry about a couple of dust spots they will rub out just fine. The overall look and effect is fantastic. Did the "metalic" number 5 of Edwards lose any metal effect when you put on the clear? From the picture I cannot completely see. Was your X-22 acrylic or enamel? Overall this came out great - I hope mine is half as good. - John

Thanks John the chromed n5 is still chrome... :)
I used the acrylic x-22. To tell the truth it was not tamiya but Gunze, anyway it's the same paint.

Hi,
Beautiful work on the monster bike. For the clear part. Did you use gunze mr topcoat to protect the decals? I had a bad experience using 2k clear from zero paints. The clear crawled under the decals. Did you spray a thin coat of gunze or a wet coat.

Nice work Andrea! You sparyed the clear very good. I like it!
Did you make some test? How well sticks the 2 k clear over the gunze/tamiya acrilic clear?

@eyckle: I used the aqueos line from Gunze, the same of tamiya X-22 acrylic. I sprayed a thin coat, anyway these paint don't give any problems with decals. It's since many year I use 2K on decal with no problem.
@Tibi: I didn't make any test... :naughty: To tell the truth some days ago, as I decided to use only gunze acrylic I sprayed the front fender with gunze, but when I used the 2K on the rear cowl, I didn't resist.... I sprayed the 2K on the front fender too and nothing happened. So I decided this solution to protect decal and avoid the little holes sometimes appear with 2K (dirty surface)
It seems the 2k sticks well on x-22..... (I hope.... :eek7:) but Iwill not try to peel it off.....

Another problem with Laguna Seca decals....
As you ca see from the pictures the writing SEMAKIN on the left side of the rear cowl is wrong. In the real bike is up and on the right in the decal is on the left.... I thought to make another black shape on which place the white writing but the writing on the decal is... CLEAR!!!!

probably you can paint all these area in black and use a new "SEMAKIN DI DEPAN" white decal.

Andrea - the Tech3 bike is beautiful - the paint is like glass - excellent detail without going overboard. The exhaust heat staining is not too much and looks very realistic. Your clear and finish polish and wax is evident of your skills. One thing though - slicks "tyres" never have a molding rib down the center - If it was mine I would lightly sand down the rubber flash and then apply a small amount of "oil" to the rubber to make it shiny like a new set of slicks. I would use a light cooking oil to get the shine back. New slicks do have a glistening shine to them that we used to use a "tyre" compound to wash off before we put on "tyre" warmers and went on the track. - John

Thank John , I discussed about molding rib on the italian forum. I know that it is there, but when I sanded the rib it seemed to be like... recessed... and I was afraid to overdone with sandpaper and change the shape of the tire. Usually I airbrush satin/flat clear on the rubber

Hello John
that tires are for the Laguna Seca version. I installed them on my dremel and spinned them slowly. With a thin brush I used an acrylic flat white to paint the band. Let only the brush to touch the whell and the rotation make the job... :)

Finally yesterday I clear coated the rear cowl with 2K..... I can't believe it....
I used a thin layer of aeromaster clear paint below instead of tamiya, just to test it.

I'm sorry for the mis-understanding Andrea - I should have realized that was not your bike because the rear cowl lettering is incorrect and I know that was something you wanted to correct. Also I checked the "nicolecron" Laguna Seca decals and they have the lettering separate on the rear cowl from the black background so a person can correct the flaw that is with the ST27 decals - John

I saw the nicolecron.... I suppose they are new. The semakin writing is correct and the black stripe for the rear cowl seems to be correct too. A better choice instead S27

Yes your are correct Andrea - I just ordered a set of the Bike decals and the "rossi" leathers suit decals from Nicolas - at Nicolecron. I have purchased other decals that he sells and they are all very good quality. - John

Andrea - nice carbon work on the exhaust hanger - also great detail on the exhaust pipe/muffler in general. I thought the rear cowl lettering was supposed to be different from what you have. The rear lettering you have is like the ST27 decals?? I thought you noted that was a mistake in the decals from the reference pictures you have. still it all looks great - John

Sorry Andrea - my miss-understanding - Yes those letters. I was talking about what you had discovered pg3 last entry this thread. It wasn't that the writing was wrong it was that the writing was "clear" and required a white background to show thru the letters. Now I fully understand the error with the ST27 decals. - John

Hello John the decal are clear and are wrong too. Take a look at the position of "semakin di depan" on the left and on the right. They are different on the real bike but the same on S27 decals....

Just to show you I'm doing nothing....
Worked at the windshield which has a little piece of the 46 number. Did a new white decal and correct the white little circle on the number (which is the white rivet on the front cowl) as it went on the windshield. In the beginning I did it by brush, in the second moment I decided to sacrifice a new decal to cut the orange/blu stripes and cover it. After all just a swim into the future.
