Question warped dash help

figured there'd be more traffic in here... Hi all, my parents have a 2000 mercury mystique LS. i've read that there was a recall way back in 2001 or so on the car because of the dash warping and stuff... just recently the dash has warped and the defrost vent popped out and stuff... is the recall still in effect if we wanted to get it changed or would we have to pay an arm and a leg to get it done...(i would probably put it in myself if it was expensive to replace).
thanks in advance
~Brandon~

Re: warped dash help

ya i just drove it this last weekend and it's up to 100,300 miles (alot of trips to the lake cabin in summer)... we bought it from a ford dealership used with about 60,000... isn't it something they should have replaced when they got it in?... or at least told us about... at this point it wasn't warped... but within a year the black vent piece slowly started to not fit.

Re: warped dash help

I'm not sure, my contour is a 96' so I don't have the dash warp problem.

Re: warped dash help

It wasn't actually a recall, it was an owner notification and it is no longer in effect. If it didn't show any signs of warping, the dealer certainly wasn't going to put the time and money into replacing it. I doubt they would have if it did show signs of warping. Its going to cost you a ton to have a new dash put in since it is a fairly labor heavy job.
The good news is there's a repair kit for around $100. Its basically a black plastic strip that rivots to the top of the dash and holds it down. I'm not sure, but I think you may have to remove the windshield to put it in. You can find the specifics by searching the aesthetics forum on contour.org.

Re: warped dash help

I wouldn't buy a junk yard dash. Its been sitting in the sun for who knows how long and will most likely start to warp if it hasn't already. It would also have to be a 99-00 dash, since the ones before that are a slightly different design.

Re: warped dash help

i live in Minnesota, the dash... um it's a black 2000 mercury mystique with i believe it's a tan or dark tan dash ... but ya junk yard idea doesn't appeal...
