It's time to start the progress thread for one of my favorite cars, The Porsche 944 Turbo.
The Kit is the "new" Revell kit wich is very easy to pick up from eBay for about 20-25$. I'm not sure if this is a re-issue of some older kit or if is made by new tools. Maybe someone here knows this better than me? I found it a bit strange that I could not find a progress thread on this Revell kit here on AF when the kits are so easy available, and the 944 is a very well known and nice car, wich most people also can afford to buy IRL, instead of dreaming of million dollar ferraris they probably even wont get a chance to sit in. Anyway, I will start with a roundup on what the kit includes, then I will go into some more details about the kit before I start the "work progress". Here is the box: The kit comes with opening hood, engine and opening headlights. ![]() All the content: - White body - 1 white sprue - 2 gray sprues - Clear parts - tires - Engine hoses (in rubber) :-) - Nice decal sheet ![]() The body, with seperate hood, but integrated rear wing. You can also notice that this kit got working "pop up" frontlights. ![]() The large gray sprue with chassis parts: ![]() White sprue with interior and body parts: ![]() The engine and wheels: ![]() Rubber hoses: (way to go Revell...) ![]() Clear parts: ![]() Tires, the rubber feels nice but they need some flash cleanup. ![]() Decal sheet: very nice detailed prints ![]() My first impression is that this is a very good kit! The body shape looks very nice and true to the 1:1 car. and kit quality for both the body and the sprues looks just as good as the Tamiya 911 Turbo '88 that I just finished. The are virtually no flash on any parts except for the tires and a little on some clear parts, but hey, even Tamiya got that. First impression = Thumbs up! Next I will take a closer look at some parts and details.

Re: Porsche 944 Turbo - Revell
Awesome pick! I like this model a whole lot.
If you re interested in knowing, it's actually a rerelease of the by-gone hasegawa kit. I have got that one at home, but haven't built it yet. I did think the headlight assembly will be fiddly, watch out for that. Oh and the rims are't up to tamiya standards (quite smallish if you ask me) so, what colour will this baby have? Oli |

Re: Porsche 944 Turbo - Revell
I assume that's a repackaged Hasegawa 944 Turbo? I built it waaaaaaay back when. The full-detail and side fender blinker seem to indicate that it's the Hasegawa kit.
Have fun w/the kit! Here's how mine came out-my building is a lot better now than back in the 80's when I built this

Re: Porsche 944 Turbo - Revell
DETAILS - CHASSIS/INTERIOR TEXTURE
Most of the underside of the floorpans are moulded with texture to simulate anit-rust treatment. Might look good with some flat grayish black color. ![]() The interior floor are also textured to imitate flocking.

Re: Porsche 944 Turbo - Revell
DETAILS - Body
The front grille looks good. Notice the headlight washers on the bumper :-) ![]() Notice the extra keyhole on the rear fender for the original Porsche alarm system :-) ![]() The sideskirts are moulded with texture to imitate some sort of anti-rust treatment. This is one of the few things I dont like with this kit. I'm not all up to date on research but I'm pretty sure Porsche didnt deliver cars with anti-rust treatment to the outside of the body, especially since the whole 944 range was "galvanized" (not sure if this is the correct english word), wich means that they are not a subject to rust. Some sanding might just fix this. You can also see that door handles are integrated on the body, I would prefer if these where seperate parts, so I'll have to consider to remove them and make new ones.

Re: Porsche 944 Turbo - Revell
DETAILS: wheels & engine
Wheels look nicely molded. I'll guess 16" inch would be the stock size for 944 Turbo, but I'm probably going for something bigger :-) ![]() Brakes, not very detailed, but again nicly molded. I have a lot of detailed Brembo discs, but that wouldnt be right on a Porsche, would it? ![]() Engine header: Might look good in red with alu letters.

Re: Porsche 944 Turbo - Revell
INSPIRATION: Reference pics
At the moment I think the reference color for a 944 is red, and when I found the pic of this awasome 944 I decided to take the kit a little further than out of the box, so I'll guess I have to order some carbon decal to make that splitter :-) ![]() Here we have a custom built engine, looks good with the red head cover, right? ![]() So The kit is inspected, and the reference pics and color is picked. Whats next? BUILDING :-) I hope to have the body painted by the end of the weekend. But I'm also building on 4 other kits so plz be patient.

Re: Porsche 944 Turbo - Revell
All those detail pics are great. This looked like an intriguing kit, but I was wary of the quality. This really makes me want it.
I just got a Fujimi Civic Type R and it has the 'rust proofing' texture on the underside as well. Kinda cool, but it's all over everything, even the exhasust. And yes, galvanized is the appropriate term: My VW is all galvanized as well. I've only seen one Mk IV Golf with any rust around here, and it was around a hole that looked like it was punched in the fender with a pick axe. |

Re: Porsche 944 Turbo - Revell
My LHS has it too but I haven't bought, dunno why. Now that I see the pictures, I think this might be a pretty good kit! Thanks for the heads up 356speedster.
Don't you think some BBS rims might look really good on this?

Re: Porsche 944 Turbo - Revell
Nice review of the kit, I look forward to seeing what you do with it.
I'm currently building this car using the Hasegawa kit. Hasegawa included a thin tan leather sheet. It's precut for carpets and interior accents. It looks like Revell left this piece out. I sanded all of that texture off of the sides, I didn't think it would look good in scale, and will be a problem area during polishing for sure. I also sanded off that raised area in front of the rear wheel opening. As far as I can tell from pictures that the only thing there on the real car is a clear piece of film to protect the paint. There's not really a raised area, It's way out of scale for a thin piece of film, so off it went. The headlights fit odd, So I glued mine in the closed position, filled around them, and rescribed the panel lines. I have the body/chassis in primer, and will spray it very soon. Mine will be pearl white. Some progress shots here: http://public.fotki.com/CADguy/my_mo...s/porsche_944/
