low level sound is coming when engine starts
Dear Members,
I had 1998 Camry V6.Yesterday I observed that a low level sound is c oming when engine starts. I only hear this sound when I open the door. I didn't hear it when I close the door. I opened the hood and didn't figure it out from where it is coming. But my guess is it's coming from th crankshaft or the other driving belts. So please help me to nail down this problem and post your valuable suggestions. Thanks in advance, With Regards Chand Last edited by chandr; 09-19-2005 at 12:33 PM. |

Re: low level sound comong when engine starts
You need to better describe the sound. Is it a squeak, a clang like metal hitting metal, a bang, a metalic rattle? When exactly does it occur? Only on startup? Is the engine is hot or cold? Is the car is moving or stationary? Is it related to any engine RPM? More information is needed here to offer any help.

This sound is similar to the Smokealaram sound with little intensity. At this time the engine is cold and is not moving. This sound is coming from the area where the pulleys and belts are residing.
Probably I am unable to explain what I am thinking due to lack of mechanical knowledge. Please forgive me and let me know if you need any other info. Thanks Chand Last edited by chandr; 09-19-2005 at 02:17 PM. |

Re: low level sound comong when engine starts
What you are describing sounds like a belt screeching as it is first rotating around one of the pulleys. After a few rotations around the pulley the friction heats the belt up a few degrees causing the belt to expand a bit and the noise stops. Next time see if you can have someone start the car up when cold while you remain up front with the hood open to see if you can determine if it is indeed a loose belt. Put you ear near that area without putting yourself in any danger from any moving parts. A 2 foot length of garden hose makes a nice stethoscope for this test. This is usually not a serious noise but generally means a belt needs to be tightened or replaced.
