WIP EK9 (Civic Type R)
yup another Civic.
![]() It’s a Fujimi kit, stock EK9 (99 Civic Type R). I chose yellow (Tamiya Chrome yellow TS-47) for the exterior. First step, I primed the body with Tamiya primer, before I sprayed the yellow, I noticed that I didn’t do a good job in sanding off some of the “edges” on the bumper which didn’t get covered with the primer. Sure, sand it smooth, washed and sprayed the yellow. BIG mistake! After some failed attempts to wash it off with water/scraping ![]() ![]() As mickbench mentioned on his post, yellow definitely a pain in the butt to work with. It does NOT cover anything. The little sanding that I did after primer clearly (as the primer got sanded and the body colour, silver/gun-metal surfaced) shown after the first layer of yellow. Without taken any chances… EK went for a bath (thanks AF FAQ for the advise of “Castrol Super Clean”) ![]() ![]() Start from square 1 ![]() Primed – at this point I was debating if I should go white, looks kinda nice with white ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Painted – lesson learned, there was a little “bump” on paint on the bumper, rather than doing anything to smooth it out, I let it sits. Overnight the paint settled and the bump was gone the next morning. ![]() ![]() ![]() Stay tune! ![]() Last edited by Apexi_N1; 07-22-2005 at 08:08 PM. |

Re: WIP post with pictures (EK9 – Civic Type R)
lol yellow doesn't like to be put on models...
photobucket is what i use, but it's kinda slow. try not to go above loading like 6 pictures at a time, cuz then the website gives you problems.

Re: Re: WIP post with pictures (EK9 – Civic Type R)
Some updates
This is the first model that I try using the tamiya polishc compound, as I read the FAQ, the polish would take out some of the paint. So, I thought I could be a little less careful with the black "over-spilled" as I filled the door-gaps with clear black (smoke), as I thought the compound would take care of that. (wishful thinking) ![]() hence, big mistake #2, the compound doesn't take out the black AT ALL. The yellow did got rubber on to the cloth but did nothing with the black! Have to use a toothpick to slowing scrape those black off. So here, after polishing for 3 times: ![]() ![]() ![]() The surface is now smooth but with alot of swirl marks on it. I think I am going to give McGurie Swirl Remover a shot. On to the window trims, again, first time using tamiya tapes. ![]() ![]() ![]() In combination with regular masking tape ![]() Flat black here we go: ![]() ![]() Tapes off, the edges are not as sharp as I would like them. I believe I didn't do a good job in pressing them hard enough to ensure no leakage. A lot of work is needed now to sharpen up those edges (any good advise on that? should I use the tapes again?) ![]() that's for now! ![]() |

Re: WIP post with pictures (EK9 – Civic Type R)
nice work so far. About the crappy edges, I get that every time too. Someone suggested spraying a bit of Tamiya Acrylic Clear first to seal the edges. Then you change into the Semi Gloss Black and shoot.

Sorry to hear about the problems you had with laying down the yellow paintjob. I had a total nightmare when I did a S2000 in yellow. I thought I was never going to get the body panel lines covered. It's darn tricky, but you seem to be getting there.
As for the light swirl makes. Get a product called Scatch X. I had the same problem, and Tamiya Compound did NOTHING for them.. Scratch X took them right out, just after one light rub.. As for the tape issues, I have the same problem, but you can reduce it by using an airbrush on a low PSI, spray further away, and mist the paint on in three to four coats. NO heavy coats.. It will bleed, as it does for me, then after 20 - 30 mins pull the tape off, pulling the tape upwards, and not away, as this has helped me reduce the jaggered edges. It's tricky.. Other then this, keep up the cool work.. |

btw, on this one I just used the spray can for the black, I did 2 layers and pulled the tape around 10 mins after the initial spray (again, reading the FAQ), so 20-30 mins actually won't be too long of a wait? (cause the paint will crack if it's tried completely, or wouldn't it?) |

I created this thread on July 22!!! It has been 4 months and I think it's time to do some update.
Make some progress but not a whole lot. I took the CF sheet from my other Fujimi kit and cut it out to fit the EK and the result is only acceptable. There are some "rikle" above the front grill (any suggestion to flatten that out?). I will let the pictures to do the talking ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Any pointers in weathering the wheels? ![]() thanks. ![]() |
