how do you become a mechanic?
are mechanic schools really any good? are they the best place to learn? it seems like all the mechanics i ever met have been into it since they were kids and introduced to it from their parents or parent. i thought maybe i could be like am intern at a autoshop to learn. i don't know though, i wouldn't want to be asked to leave because i was just getting in the way more so. how did you learn?

Re: how do you become a mechanic?
go to school. meet people who are interested in cars and most importantly, WORK ON CARS at any chance you get. experience is probably the most important factor towards learning. to get a job though, you will need a diploma, and most likely ASE certification

I went through a Ford-sponsored program called the ASSET program. It was an extremely thorough but rigorous course. We spent fifty hours a week in school, twenty five of those in the lab, then worked in the dealer a couple of months then repeated. I came out with most my Ford certs, able to pass the ASEs in one go, and one-up on the old timers who hadn't had all the updated training. The manufacturer sponsered programs are great because you have limitless access to techincal information and mentors in the dealership who teach you a lot. No matter what, go to school, the field gets more techical every year and you just can't learn it all on the street before you're thirty.

There are many good technical schools out there that can provide a good basis for becoming a tech.
Check out Wyotech or Lincoln tech or many auto makers have programs specific to that brand. Usually the schools include academics as well as technical and hands on experiance. Most schools offered by the automaker have deals where you have to be sponsored by a dealer. If you want info on the GM ASEP program send me a PM with your contact info and I will send it to you.
