In Progress Tamiya 1/12th Porsche 935 Turbo

This is the most recent project for me. It's the Tamiya 1/12 scale Porsche 935 Turbo Martini Racing version. I picked this kit up at a model show recently and just couldn't wait to start it. I had built the kit many years ago before my skill level was advanced enough to do it right. Hopefully, I can do a better job of it this time.

So far all I have done is remove some of the parts from the sprue and start cleaning things up, concentrating on the body for now. This kit was originally released in 1977 (I think) so it requires quite a lot of clean up.

Some aspects of this kit are fairly advanced and detailed and other areas are lacking in detail, like molded in screen that will need to be replaced with real screen. Also, the kit does not include seatbelts which is a must for this scale.

My plan.... I intend to build this model and make it look as realistic as possible. I realize there is a super detail aftermarket set for this car but I want to try to scratch build what I can, modify kit parts that need to be modified and only use aftermarket products for items like screen, wiring/plumbing and seatbelts.

I'm having a difficult time finding reference material/pictures for this car so if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Any comments, suggestions or tips will be appreciated also.

In progress pics will be coming soon...

This is the kit...

WOW a big project!

There's a dedicated forum to this kit: http://porsche935.proboards20.com/index.cgi which I look at out of curiosity occasionally. It's mainly for those with the $525 SMS kit but there should be plenty of reference too.

Acu-Stion do a simple photo-etched kit: http://www.hlj.com/product/ACS1229

Enjoy, and I think we ALL look forward to this thread.

Cool. I got this kit few weeks ago when Tamiya re-release it. I looked at it a bit, not a lot of cleaning to do. It's usual Tamiya Quality. (But plastic was made in 2004, not 1977)

Anyway can't wait to see some progress. It looks like an incredible detailed and fun kit to do.

The kit parts do look good overall, some engraving is a little soft, etc... but the original molds are several years old so I'm not complaining. I'm very happy to be able to build this kit again. Once you start working on it, quite a few sink marks will have to be smoothed out on several of the kit parts.

Here's the first bit of progress:

The huge body sitting in the box lid of a fujimi kit along with all the other parts to be painted white. Thay have been smoothed and need a light coat of grey primer to check my work.

The chassis tub, a little grey primer was added to check the sanding of the pin marks. Most of them are in the recessed areas which are hard to sand but visible so they have to be sanded regardless.

The wing insert has been glued in and intial priming and smoothing, Needs a little more work before final white primer.

The wheels, they are two piece front and back. They look decent out of the box but need a little work. You can see small sink marks on each spoke of the rear five spokes. They'll need to be stripped, smoothed and repainted with metalizer.

The fuel tank, molded in a semi-transparent cream color. Glues together in a top and bottom half and requires a lot of filing and sanding along that seam.

And finally, the beginnings of the engine, a little more cleaning and the basic engine block and transaxle will be ready for paint.

Thanks for looking, suggestions are welcome....

Thanks for the link to your thread, I saved it as a favorite for easy access. Your model looks fantastic and I'm sure I'll be going back to it for reference.

Also, thanks for the offer of the SMS ref pics. I just ordered the CD last night right before I posted. I may regret not getting the full detail set after looking at your build up.

I'm sure I'll be PM'ing you with questions if you don't mind?

Unfortunately I have not figured out how to fix the side window glass. The build is at a stand still until I do. The kit glass is thick and does not accurately represent the two piece sliding glass on the doors. I need to make new glass and window frames. I'll figure it out some day.....and when I do..you will all see the finished job.

Re: In Progress Tamiya 1/12th Porsche 935 Torbo

Just received the Scale Motorsports "Up close and mechanical" photo reference CD today. So look for progress to pick up. I've been holding off a little until I had this reference material so I could make the right decisions.
