the 60k/120k parts thread

Ok, so I'm collecting the parts to do my own, and I never realized it before, but every relevant site with instructions/info on the 60k tuneup has varied lists of parts needed, part numbers, etc...so here is the hap-hazard list I've put together from a few sites. I have yet to check 3si, to see if there is a prefered site or dealership they order from and recieve a discount on (if so, that might be a better priced option) but as it stands now, as Linebckr said, www.thepartsbin.com seems to have the best deal going. I have attempted to put together a comprehensive list of what to get from the partsbin. It appears to be the cheapest, including the most parts, and free shipping...so as of now, I definantly recommend it based on it seems to be the best deal. So yeah, here is the lists from the sites in the FAQ, and finally the list I made.

team3s total $339.09
Timing Belt ----------------MD193874 $145.55
Tensioner ------------------MD319040 $27.27
Water Pump -----------------MD972005 $98.17
Thermostat -----------------MD174234
Power Steering Belt --------MD172376 $14.20
Accessory (A/C) Belt -------MB879764 (W/ A/C) $27.70
Fuel Filter ----------------MB658136
Throttle Body Gasket -------MD180361
Intake Plenum Gasket -------MD143791

vr4stealth.com
Timing Belt - ------------------------------ - MD193874
Water Pump Assembly -------------------------- MD972005
Timing Belt hydraulic Tensioner -------------- MD319040
Timing Belt Tensioner Pulley------------------ MD140071
Pulley, Timing Belt Idler -------------------- MD319022

3sx -$410
water pump
gaskets
timing belt
timing belt hydraulic tensioner
timing belt tensioner pulley
tensioner pulley tool -$380 for all above
timing belt idler pulley -$30

thepartsbin.com total $373-399
timing belt ------------------------md161427/md193474 $112.14
water pump --------------------- $78-104
timing belt hydraulic tensioner ----md319040 $107.93
timing belt tensioner pulley -------md140071 included w/ belt
timing belt idler pulley -----------md151447 included w/ belt
fuel filter --------------------- $18
thermostat $26
Accessory Belt $18
Power steering belt $13

The variance in part numbers annoys me, as of now, I see 3 different part numbers for the timing belt, 2 for the idler pulley, etc...

All obviously agree the Timing belt, water pump, and tensioner should be replaced. I'd go with idler pulley and tensioner pulley as well. Fuel filter, plugs, and thermostat I would suggest. But what gets me is vr4stealth doesn't mention the other drive belts, and 3sx doesn't even sell them. I would think they should be replaced...I know my accessory belt is squealing like a stuck pig in the cold weather. But yeah, as you can see the partsbin comes in $40 under 3sx, and additionally that includes the fuel filter, t-stat, and other 2 belts, and free shipping.

The only thing lacking from thepartsbin (Linebckr please correct me if I'm wrong) is the tensioner pulley tool (apparently there are 3 variations of this tool, 3sx sells one, you could probably borrow one from someone on here, or team3s' site in the FAQ under the 60k tuneup has contact and pricing information for getting the other 2 designs of this tool, how you get it is really up to you).

Obviously everything on the car should be inspected at 60k, brake systems, drivetrain, suspension, alignment, check/change all fluids, etc, but that isn't what my focus of this thread is.

So yeah, I'll probably link to this from the FAQ, so if you have any comments, suggestions, better places to buy from, things I've overlooked, or things you feel are superfluous feel free to add.

PS. I just realized I named this thread 60k/120k...at the 120k tuneup you should get your oil pump and related gaskets as well.

Re: the 60k/120k parts thread

ya, good thread. glad you mentioned the parts numbers. as you mentioned, i got all my parts from thepartsbin.com. the one problem i did run into is that the parts they sent me for the pulleys (idler pulley, tensioner pulley) were different from the parts on my car. the pulleys didn't match up, and so i simply didn't change them. The most important parts in the 60k tuneup are the timing belt and the timing belt hydraulic tensioner. [if the belt breaks, you're screwed...if the tensioner fails, then the belt is screwed, then you're screwed as well]. so it makes sense. but as i researched about the 60k/120k tuneups, the reason for replacing the pulleys is for fear that they might seize up, and then wear the belt down. Since i didn't receive the correct parts (or the parts on my car were different... not sure which), i simply didn't bother replacing them.

so i would make call a dealership (or if you have CAPS you can check with it) to be sure and double check all the parts numbers. granted, i wasn't too worried about some little pulleys, but just to be certain.

as far as additional parts, you mentioned the tensioner pulley tool. I have this tool, i got it from 3sx. its not necessary that you use this, however it can make the job easier. to understand how it is used, i would recommend you look at the pics in the service manual. basically, a 1/4" ratchet fits in the tool, the tool fits in the tensioner pulley. as you apply tension to the pulley (in the right direction with the 2 holes oriented correctly above the bolt), presure is in turn applied upon the hydraulic tensioner. you know you have the right amount of tension on the pulley/hydraulic tensioner when the grenade pin in the hydraulic tensioner spins freely. at this point, tighten the bolt on the tensioner pulley, so it doesn't move and continues to apply that same force on the hydraulic tensioner. this is THE critical step in the timing belt service. Once you are in there looking at the parts, you'll better understand how it works. also, i've heard a screwdriver (flat head) can be used (instead of the 'tensioner pulley tool') to apply force on the tensioner to set it properly. i wasn't clear how to do this, and since i had the tool, i just used it.

other tools...spanner wrench (or as team3s calls it the "special mitsu tool"). this you can also borrow from me. however, there's always more than one way to skin a cat. this tool is basically used to hold the crankpulley still while you apply torque to loosen the bolt. -->another way of doing this is to put a 1/2" breaker bar on the crankpulley bolt, rotate the crank until the breaker bar is resting against the frame, then simply turn the key in the ignition to turn the engine over (but don't start it). this will turn the crank over, and will loosen the crank pulley...then you can remove it. Also, people have used an impact wrench to remove and re-install the crank pulley bolt. I'm pretty sure this is OK as well. however, this was the first technical job i did on my car (change and turn brakes and rotors isn't technical), and so i figured the torque specs for the crankshaft pulley were pretty important. [here is where a debate could follow, but i won't go there]. as long as the crankbolt is tight and secure, everything should be fine.

please read and re-read all step-by-step directions you find on the 60k timing belt change. if you have any questions or aren't clear on something, please ask, as you're probably not the first to ask that question.
