4G4D Auto-tranny, weird problem, please read!

Hello,

I have a 4 door DX now for the winter, great little car.
I have a weird problem tho. After driving, putting the car into park I can't take the key out of the ignition until the "P" in the cluster lights up red. You actually have to sit there with the car running for a few moments. Eventualy it lights up and I can turn the car off and take the key out.

Any one have a similar problem or any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: 4G4D Auto-tranny, weird problem, please read!

i just had the same problem in the 93 integra. and the strange thing is it acted up more in the cold than when it was not.

i will try and explaine what ended up being the problem, bear with me...when you take the console apart there is a little slider. on the slider is a little ball like a bb. the bb is pushed up by a spring, which causes the slider to have tension in whatever position you slide it to. whatever position you slide it to is the gear you are selecting. the spring was no longer springy. we had a 97 teg that had been rolled. the sliders were different shape but had the same spring. replaced the spring in the 93 and haven't had a problem since.

jer seem to think the 88 might not have that being older. there is a 4g4d down at the wrecking yard. he'll check it out. if it has one, i'll ask him to grab it.

...i'm not going down there today. we yanked 2 5g engines and dropped 1 of them back in yesterday within like 6 hrs, and i'm sick. i'm staying home today.

its 1 of the switches - sometimes it doesn't go fully into park, so the previous owner of my car has a spare key she kept to put by the shifter so u can put it fully in park and take the key out

it happened once when i got my sound system installed, couldn't shut it off for a while

Yes, I agree with both of you. It does get worse when it is colder.
I will take it apart and check it out.

Thanks a lot for the info, it will give me a direction to go to look for the problem.

Mike

the fact that it gets worst when it's colder...i say look to the spring. the stupid little ittie bittie spring is causing choas in your happy honda world.

let me add we tried all sorts of things. he resoildered the connections, it was no help. we noticed that when the console was apart and we applied pressure to the slider housing that the light would pop right on. jer tried putting a tiny screw in the corner of the slider housing to cinch it up. that made it worse as when the light was not on we could no longer apply pressure to make it work. at this point jer assumed it was the spring. he didn't have another spring that small. he put a little piece of wire under the spring. that solved the problem for 1 maybe 2 mos and then it started acting up again. we had the 97 parts teg the next time it was taken apart. put the new spring in and the car has been good to go for the past 4 months, including starting on 8 degree mornings when we have to take victorian to school.

try taking the console apart and leaving the rest together. the next morning when it's cold try pressing on the slider housing in different spots starting by park.

it seems like an odd problem but i guess it would make sense that if it's getting poor contact that the problem is worse in the cold.

!

YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

problem fixed! I took it apart this weekend. I took the switch apart and rebuilt it, with new grease. The old grease turned into a kind of paste. The parts weren't moving freely any more.

Thanks for the advice!

Mike

Smokeeee

Wow i def have got to try that cause my shity automatic does that to. But its to cold to go outside and play with the car. My Hatchback has taken a turn for the worst. I have the most bizarre things happen to that car its not even funny. Now my steering wheel colum (sp??) starts smoking and i have no idea what the problem is i took it all apart and thought maybe it was electrical so i looked at all the wires and rewrapped them and it still smokes anyone know what it could be. Its funny cause thats not the only car i have it does it in lol... The beater chevy limuna it does it in to.
