Re: McLarens on tv

I have the Million Dollar Cars episode recorded. Kennedy himself is giving his opinion on the car through most of the segment.

Re: McLarens on tv

Actually, now that you mention it, I think the one I'm thinking about was on the History Channel. It was part of a week long special called "Modern Marvels: Boy's Toys." Kennedy was also on that special too. I don't really remember who hosted it.

Zero, Nada, Zip

Watched the show, but the McLaren was a no show. Will check the schedule, but it was not on in prime time. Oh well, it was an interesting show. Maybe next time.

My TIVO guide for the Science Channel lists two episodes of "Ultimate Cars" starting at 8PM tonight. The first one is described as "Beauty" Sports Auto (2004) Jaguar E-Type; Aston Martin DB5. Series. The second one is "Luxury Cars" Sports Auto (2004) Rolls Royce Phantom; Bentley R-Type Continental. Series.

A quick check of the Science Channel website make it appear that we may have missed the episodes that would have included the McLaren, as I see two episodes from Nov 3rd are listed as:

"Supercars" Discover an exclusive class of automobiles from manufacturers around the world that are capable of fast speeds, are produced in small numbers, and cost large sums of money. Get behind the wheel of the Ferrari F40 and the Lamborghini Miura.

"Race Cars" Soaring around the track at speeds in excess of 100mph, race cars are stunning feats of engineering. Experience the feeling of driving a Porsche 917 and a Ford GT40, two of the world's legendary race cars.

= = = = = =

Even though the McLaren isn't specifically mentioned in any of those show descriptions, it certainly seems that it would be more fitting to have the car featured in the "Supercars" episode, and possibly an honorable mention in the "Race Cars" one.

EDIT: A funny thing just happened - I switched the TV over to TLC so I could set the TIVO to record the Million Dollar Autos show and there was a preview for it on at the exact moment I changed to the channel. This caused me to panic momentarily as I thought it was on right then and I was missing it. Then I realized it was just a commercial.

I'm going to set the TIVO to automatically record that show on the Science Channel. I think I'll catch it eventually assuming they re-air it.

At least we know to look out for it now.

EDIT AGAIN: Actually - there is a Flash video promo of the show featuring the McLaren F1 on their website. If this is the commercial you saw, then my guess is that this is probably just their standard commercial for the show, and doesn't reflect what will be shown in each episode. That's probably why you thought the McLaren episode would be on tonight.

http://media.science.discovery.com/promos/promos.html

Also, there are one or two frames of the promo video where you can kind of see the license place. It reads "I3 MAC" making this Tony Smith's F1 road car, chassis #020.

Re: McLarens on tv

yup, thats the commercial that i saw. the way that they talk about it, it sounds like a one-time special. that is what threw me off

here is the info on tlc.com about their show "Million Dollar Motors

The world of the million-dollar car is marked by style, passion and lots of horsepower. An elite club of the most exclusive and expensive automobiles ever made feature the speedy Mclaren 1, the luxurious Mercedes Maybach 62 and the exclusive Ferrari Enzo."

heheh, mclaren 1.

I'm already worried... There's enough misinformation out there on the F1 already.

When TLC's "Rides" did the West Coast Customs episode on the Ferrari Enzo, the host commentary was being done by Jason Priestley, the former "Beverly Hills 90210" star. He's a car guy, and even a semi-pro race car driver, so I expected a good result, however at the very start of the episode he referred to the car as the "Ferrari F50 Enzo".

Maybe Jason didn't write that script, but as a car guy he should have known better and whoever did write it should be flogged for not doing their research. You would think at least one of the "car people" associated with the program would have known better.

Then on last week's Top Gear Supercar comparison, Clarkson kept referring to the Enzo as the "F60". He should most definitely have known better. There is no such thing as the F60. Ferrari has never referred to the Enzo as an F60. It was really a very poor showing for Top Gear to get it so very wrong - repeatedly. I mean who does the technical consulting on that show if even Clarkson isn't wise enough to get the details right?

= = = = = =

I'll go on the record now stating that any production company who wishes to do a show featuring a McLaren F1 can hire me for free to make sure they get the details right.

Hopefully Mr Kennedy was able to ensure they got the details right on the F1 in this show. Afterall, he's not someone who bought the car simply because it was expensive and would look nice in his garage.

West Coast Customs didn't impress me either in that episode. I stopped paying attention when one of the techs said this Enzo would be the first roadcar to ever have custom center lock wheels. We've seen Kennedy's car with them on at SEMA...

I doubt that most of the people at west coast customs even knew what an Enzo is before they worked on one.

The general US population always knows of the latest ferrari or lamborghini (well except maybe for the drag-racing rednecks who deny the existence of anything that's not ford or chevy ), and then they forget about it when the buzz dies down.

As evidence: I'm using a shot of a white porsche and a "fake-LM" GTR for my wallpaper here in the CADLAB (I'm posting from a campus computer lab.) Of 11 people who have walked by and asked about the F1, only one got close to the right answer, and he guessed it was an LM. I've heard Lamborghini come up a few times, but everybody else is clueless regarding a car design that's 10 over years old now

Just goes to show you, that Ferrari, and to a lesser extent porsche, and Lamborghini are the only supercars that exist in the minds of your average American, and only for as long as there's still buzz surrounding the car. Ask a random person to name a ferrari other than the Enzo, and they're going to have trouble doing it.

McLarens are a foreign concept to people, and when they hear it's (arguably) the fastest production car, they are almost shocked: "Yes folks, it's at least 15 mph faster than every (stock) road-going Ferrari ever made."
