Unhappy This is a Challenge - Gauge and cruise problem

Has anyone had this problem? I have a 1992 Passat that has intermittent fuel and temp gauges. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't. The cruise control also only works when these gauge show some indication. I have already changed the whole gauge cluster, but i still have the same problem. Hitting the dash sometimes helps, but not always. What do I need to do to fix this? Can anyone help?

Thanks TB

Re: This is a Challenge - Gauge and cruise problem

The car is well known for problems with the instrument cluster connector. I've seen all types of things tried, but it can be extremely difficult to get the connection working properly. The best one I've seen (as far as that it actually worked) was a screw inserted between the plug & socket to keep just the right pressure on the connector to keep the contacts touching.

could this be my cause as well?

My 91 passat had the fuse keep blowing 2 days ago for the gauges and then it seems to let the entire light system run no matter if the switch is on or not, but it must be on to get high beam and then it started to drain the battery like it quit charging.

Ideas???

Thanks
