Leaky injectors = fire

After seeing some of the problems others have been having, I thought that I would post this here. I work as a personal trainer, one of my clients owns a 2004 X5. She has recently been noticing a gasoline odor from her car. After contacting the local delarship they told her to immediately stop driving it. They have apparantly developed a problem with the injectors leaking in cold weather and gas is leaking on to the motor. Well I don't need to tell you what's wrong with that do I. She was informed to park the vehicle or risk the chance of an engine fire. Now her car sits for the last two months because they have no fix, no replacement parts for it. They told her they would replace the injectors with new ones but the problem still exists. They said they would have to try and manufactor some new ones that won't leak, but have not done so yet. My biggest question is Why NO Recall? It is obviously a serious problem that they have no fix for. Anyone else with this issue or better yet a solution. I am looking for any answers on her behalf. Thanks.

Well after being in Contact with BMW, this was there response. We will not have a working part to replace the defective injector problem until November/04. So they will replace existing units with a new set of injectors and hope for the best. They have 25 reported cases of these leaky injectors which is noticable by an odor of gasoline in the cab of the unit. If any other X5 owners out there are driving and smell gasoline, immediately contact your dealers.

Do you know the production month and year of your client's 2004 X5? Is it a 3.0i or a 4.4i?

I found out today it is acutally a 2003 X5 and its a 3.0i. The month and year won't matter as the problem is yet to be fixed to date. The new design won't be done until November of this year. The problem with the injectors is also cold related as I am assuming when it gets to cold the metal contracts and causes the leak.

Thanks Minimac. Although I am thinking about a 4.4i - albeit with a different engine - I personally have 4 friends that have a 3.0i. Will remind them on what I read here.

Hi Guys,

We just bought a 02 X5 3.0 and last week it got cold over night - about -30C and yes, the injectors leaked big time - about a half a pint in less than 10 minutes of running on the driveway.

Anyway, what is the status/disposition of this issue? Has BMW come up with a real fix? Did they do it on warranty? Does it actually work? Thanks for any forthcoming reply.

Any other design flaws that we should know about on these vehicles?
