Engine stalls after >20 miles highway drive and entering local at trafic light or stop sign. Can start right away with adding gas. After a few min local drive or pull off for a few min it comes back to normal.
Went to Toyota dealer 3 times already and still don't know what exactly went wrong. Replaced ERG vaccum sensor and modulator($300) today and still stalling. Now suspect EGR valve and IAC (idle air control). The dealer disconnected EGR system to let me drive home to see if stalling still occur. If not, then the EGR valve need to be replaced ($200 part). If stalling still exist, that's not the EGR. So far I drove twice w/o stalling. Will keep trying (it happens intermitently). Anyone out there has similar experience and advise? |

Re: Camry 98 stalls after highway drive
the egr valve itself sounds like it is at fault, usually when the car is warm, the iac valve usually causes stalling on cold start conditions, probably should have replaced the egr valve first, sometimes can remove valve and clean, also hose going from egr valve to the modulator can get clogged and cause stalling,

Re: Re: Camry 98 stalls after highway drive
Dave, Thank for your reply. You are right - should have changed the egr valve first (don't know why the dealer didn't do that. waiting for me to come back to charge me for another $200 plus?). So far, I've driven ~ 180 miles (off highway 5-6 times) with the egr system disconnected and had no stalling at all. My friend who has done egr cleaning before is going to help me clean to valve this weekend to save me the $200 + labor and reconnect egr to see what happens.

Re: Camry 98 stalls after highway drive
cool, good to have friends like that, just make sure that the hose from the egr valve to the modulator is clear , take it off and blow through it, other than that, just pick up a new egr gasket, will probably need to replace it when you remove the valve,

Re: Re: Camry 98 stalls after highway drive
Cleaned the EGR valve today (lots carbon deposit clogged the pass) and worked fine afterword. Will keep watching to see if it stalls again. Looks like it's the problem. It just took my friend 1.5 hrs.
