Exhaust System Popping/Snaping When Hot
2004 Yukon Denali XL, 2200 miles
Popping or snapping noise when vehicle is hot, at idle or after shut off. This lasts until it cools down. According to TSB, ID# 1405265 this is caused by water getting trapped between the shell layers of the muffler. GMC says there is currently no fix for this problem !!!!!!!!! Anyone else have this or am I just lucky ? If you have it, any luck fixing it ? |

Stan,
I have an 03 Denali that also pops and pings when the vehicle warms up. I think the GM answer is bogus. My guess is that cheap metal is being used on the exhaust components? I'm pretty disappointed in my SUV so far... especially with the noisy drive-train that clunks and bumps when slowing down? Are you experiencing this problem? al |

Re: Exhaust System Popping/Snaping When Hot
my yukon did that for a while too...but so did my dads ford and my moms jeep and a lot of my friends cars. its probably not anything worth worrying about. when metal gets hot it expands some and when it cools down it should unexpand...not enough that you can see...but enough that you can hear the popping noise

I have a 2003 Denali and I have the same popping noise. I've been calling
and complianing to GM for quite sometime now. I keep getting the same answer about them working on the problem. Its been close to a year now. I think they are trying to avoid replacing the exhaust system. I had a 2001 Denali and I didn't have this problem. I don't think we should have to live with this problem. Especially the hefty price tag they carry. I ask the dealer I brought mine from, how come the 2003 didn't come with michelin's? He said they were cutting cost. So I assume they probably put a cheap exhaust system on there too. |

Re: Exhaust System Popping/Snaping When Hot
Don't ALL cars do this? I know that my '94 Honda Civic did this. I've heard motorcycles do it too. My '03 Yukon does it, but it's not really loud...just like a ticking or something.

This is the first vehicle I ever owned that does this. I have heard cars do
a little ticking when they are cooling off, but nothing like I hear from my Denali. I can hear this popping noise a 100 yards away! |

My 03 Denali had the same noise. My dealer replaced the exhaust system (amazing). That fixed that problem, but then the new exhaust developed a vibration/buzz. The heat shield rivets had popped so they put two straps around the muffler to secure it. That worked for awhile but now the buzz is back again.....And that's just the beginning of all the problems I've had (and still have) with this vehicle.

I just filed a complaint with the BBB. Some guy from GMC called me back
and said he would get back to me in about 5 days. So I'm waiting. You know they are able to put all this high tech stuff on vehicles and they can't fix a exhaust problem, Wrong??? They don't want to replace the exhaust. It will cost them too much. I really let this guy have it. I have been calling customer service at least once ever 2 weeks. We need more people to complain. I'm not done with them yet. I'll give them another 30 days to come up with a solution. I will find other ways to insure the public knows.................. |

The dealer replaced my exhaust system to fix a droaning noise (04 YXL), the droan is still there and now I have the ping sound. For those that have not heard it, it sounds as if someone is inside your exhaust system shooting a .22 gun.
The ping is so loud I can hear it all through my house and in traffic, it scares folks. I get three to four pings, the first being the loudest and then getting less intense after turning off the engine. I get one ping here and there while at idle (in traffic) but never when I'm driving. The dealer told me GM is investigating the issue but I haven't heard an answer yet. I asked them to put my old system back on since the droaning noise wasn't corrected, but they wouldn't. |

exhaust pop
Mine pops also but it's no big issue. These vehicle use a massive stock muffler but I would take what the dealer service tech says with a real grain of salt. Their comments and experience (on cost cutting measures for instance), and their opinions are not something to be put a lot of faith in. I gotta say if you hear it in your house maybe you have a house issue. Some pings may be more severe and that should be addressed on some form of measurement, not just "In my opinion it's too loud..."

I dropped my 03 denali at the dealer today for MANY other problems. I told the service monkey about the pop snap of the exhaust. he looked at me, said normal, wouldn't even write it down on the service order and wouldn't discuss it futher. major attitute about the issue.
I say if we ALL complain to 1800-GMC-TRUCK, they will eventually do something. |
