How to get started with 3D
Ive seen severaly people saying how frusterated they are cuz the totally suck at 3D. I think you guys are proly all expecting to get something like asaenz S15 on your first attempt. You can't go out there and expect to bust out a tight '99 honda civic lowered 3in. with a ***** body kit and 18in ***** rims. ya dig? start small. A few weeks ago i decided that i wanted to get good at drawing cars. Here is the progress i made over the course of about a week and a half.
what the heII is that?-- ![]() small, boxy, generic, UGLY-- ![]() playa playa playa-- ![]() I was pumped, i call it Lexus-- ![]() Bigger, tuner looking, yet F'd up-- ![]() BMW 325i. I was a proud father. Color! It just gets better and better-- ![]() ***hope you find this helpful. everyone else feel free to throw in tips or techniques of your own. keep it real. holla ![]() |

Wow, huge improvement.
3D is hard. You have to know about perspective. I still mess up. I mean my spoiler on the S15 is a little off (perspectively) but it is too late now. I layered in heavy graphite and if I erase I will have a ghost image. Ok, you guys know I use (grids) right. I don't just start drawing a car in 3D. The grids are my favorite tool. Even grids can be tricky to set up. Check out this site for some tutorials on drawing. They are very good. Read them and apply them to drawing cars. http://www.sibleyfineart.com/ Go to studio tips, index of tutorials His site is weird I cannot give the direct link. alfred

more..
asaenz-- how do you use grids, im kinda lost about that, it seems like that would make it way too easy. I also have another question for you. How long does the rough copy-that first pic posted of the S15-take you. Mine take quite a while, i mess up over and over and end up doing everything atleast twice before i get it how i like it. Right now im working on a 2002 WRX Sti. im about 3 hours into it, and i need to do the outline of rims before i do pen and color. other people too, how long do you take, lets get some traffic in this thread so i feel more special for starting it. haha

Re: How to get started with 3D
it depends on if im looking off a pic or a making a car up. im looking off a pic, i use lines and boxes to guide certain parts of the car.(ie. a windshield, wheels, exaust etc.) this part usually takes a while for me too because everything has to be perfect or the car will not turn out that good. im think if it is a detailed car, it will prolly take me anywhere from an hour to 4 hours. yes it seem like a lot but in the end it turns out good.(usually :]) if i am making a car up, i make a box at whatever angle i want. this usually takes even longer than looking of a pic because i make the car up as i go. i think there is a tut on the grid technique. we used it in art class last year for making cartoons. it works really well if u want everything to be perfect. i got a 4.0 =). i usually dont use it because i think its good to fluxuate the car with some creativity. good luck on your wrx vw.

Re: How to get started with 3D
awesome, thanks man. i have question that i have been trying to figure out for a while. my cars often look like they are from a very high view.(like POS #2 up top, but not quite that much.) I cant seem to figure out what part of the drawing will determine that angle. like is it the angle that the closes bumper edge determines.like that angle that the windsheild makes with the drivers side window makes. <--jiberish. anyway, i always have to much roof showing, and it looks shitty. that 325i is aight, but i can never get my first few attemts right.
Disclaimer: If you understood any of that it would be awesome if anyone could help help me with a tip or too. awesome homies. holla |

Re: How to get started with 3D
ok cool. im still a little miffed on how that works. i'll try it, but if you get a chance, post something you did and leave the box in there so i can see how you set things up.
by the way, ithink you were the one i was talkign to about how to post a pic. i think another way to lower your image size would be to tweak your scanners quality setting. make come into the comp with less quality/smaller size. i dunno, i have no scanner so i had to be content with taking pics of them with a digital camera in bad lighting. holla |
