'93 Camry LE V6 "power" button
There is a power button on my 1993 Camry LE V6 next to the shifter (the thing where u choose park, reverse, neutral, drive, etc). I checked the manual and it says it provides quicker acceleration. I tested it and it does. Does anybody know how this works? I'm quite curious.

I know what's he's talking about. I use it all the time. BUT I don't press the O/D button. Except when I shift into 2nd gear.

Me again
It's a different button than the O/D button. The O/D button is actually on the shifter. This power button that I'm talking about is near the base of the shifter.
BTW - It's an automatic transmission. |

it probaly just tells tells hte transmission to be more "sporty." down shifts earlier and is more responsive and stuff...

this is how the power thing works. when your in normal mode the chip in your car makes your tranny shift earlier so you get the better fuel economy and so forth. but when you need the power and fast response, you press the power button, and what that does is it makes the chip tell your tranny to shift later. so instead of shifting when your hitting 30mph your car will rev higher and go faster and shift when its like at 35-40mph.

AKFXO is right.
Inside the tranny(on an automatic) you have a valve body....that is what determines the shift pattern.......spring tension and oil pressure required before the transmission will change gears.
When you depress the "power" button the shift pattern in electronically overridden and the shift points are at a Higher rpm, therefore revving the engine more in each gear and providing less economy and more acceleration. You can accomplish greater acceleration by simply shifting the gears manually (yourself). You will have more engine wear (eventually) and less fuel economy. Have fun! Also the fella going on about the throttle body -give it up fella- the throttle body is a large aluminum tube with an open and close flap (connected to your foot via the gas pedal and cable assbly) opens according to your foot position.....not a Star Trek beam pattern buffer. all O/D does is limit it at 3rd gear for more power on tap at hwy speeds while delivering inferior fuel economy.. so unless ur going at a high enough speed, it shouldn't matter if its on or off.. acceleration is not affected if its from a dead stop..

Wow dude, that's digging for gold if I ever saw it! LoL!
Once and for all, the Toyota repair manual: A140-E transmission, found on all i4 Camry platforms. ![]() ![]() ![]() A540-E / A541-E Normal pattern: ![]() ![]() As you see... The majority of the change is during engine braking. On the A540 transmissions (v6's) the shift pattern is not changed much during the up-shift, second gear holds to 43mph, 2-3 holds until 75mph. The ETC button turned on simply changes the A540 to the higher shifting point (but not much higher).

I know exactly what button you're talking about and i use it all the time. It allows for higher revs before changing gears. and is a definate difference in performance. it is connected directly to the onboard computer regulating fuel-air ratio and is a much simpler version of an aftermarket power chip. as for deceleration there is no noticable effect.

No. I'm sorry... You are wrong on several levels, and I can't let other people reading continue to be confused.
1) No... The ECT / PWR switches are NOT wired into the ECT logic section of the ECM. They connect to the ECT-ECM (Electronic Control Transmission - Electronic Control Module) That's right... It has nothing to do with the EFI-ECM. Because of that, 3/4 of what you just said is immediately negated. 2) It does make a differance in deccelleration. Did I not just post the Toyota documentation that shows the shift logic downshifting, and locking the torque convertor at higher speeds? As for overall performance it does improve from the few hundred extra rpm it allows the transmission to spin. Unfortunately... It makes at most a 1-2 tenths of differance at a drag strip. So it's not exactly large. ![]() So for the last time, once and for all. There is your shift pattern & torque convertor lock-up ranges, and the logic that dictates them. It has nothing to do with engine performance.
