The problem appears to be the rod between the two carburetors sticking and causing the engine to race, especially after it is hot. Since I bought it (a year ago) it has always had a high idle when cold, but was not a problem once it warmed up. The problem really started a month ago after I returned from two weeks of active duty for the reserves. The first time I drove it, the engine went to redline after driving it for less than a mile. I have taken it to a couple mechanics who tried lubricating it with no luck. Finally, I took it to the Honda dealer who indicated that he could do nothing (it needed new carburetors, and they were not available). I have tried to find used carburetors for it, but they are very hard to find, expensive ($250), sold only as "rebuildable", with no warranty. The car is now idling better than ever when cold (and rod between carburetors returned to proper position), but when hot soon revs up to redline, so that it can't be driven. It won't return to idle without manually turning the "stuck" rod back. I am a college student hoping to get one more year out of my car.
