2014 Silverado AC died
Hi folks... new to the forum!
2014 Silverado 1500 4x4 5.3l A few days ago I noticed the AC was not cooling. Popped the hood and turned the climate control temp down, the clutch kicked in and the compressor runs but the lines under the hood do not get cold. I suspect there is a charge in the system else the clutch wouldn't kick in. I am thinking that the compressor is shot. I bought the truck last December and all the factory warranties are expired. The pump does not make any noise either. Anyone have any thoughts on this? |

Re: 2014 Silverado AC died
this is to ME a new truck. my 2000 175K miles never had any ac cooling issues. I did however have the temp door and blower motor resistors fail due to GM poor designs.
you do have a strange problem as the low pressure switch senses pressure but the compressor is not pumping the refrigerant. the compressor valves could be damaged this does happen if the system is over charged and the compressor had liquid in the pumping valve area. lately I have had GM truck owners having this problem when they start the engine sometimes the ac belt squeals and smokes because of the compressor locked up.. then after a few min they start it up and ac works . over charging is usually the problem but it is possible GM did some cost cutting to have this issue.. one guy said [under warranty] dealership wanted $200 to replace the smoked ac belt .. wear item LOL ............. good luck could cost $1grand .. |

Re: 2014 Silverado AC died
Number one failure mode for mobile a/c is loss of refrigerant due to a leak. Your compressor can run with as little as 5% refrigerant charge in it! You have a very good chance you have lost more than half of your refrigerant. The best thing to do is have remaining refrigerant recovered and weighed- that way you'll know how much you have probably lost. Then find and fix your leak, then evacuate (vacuum) and then weigh in proper amount of refrigerant.

Thanks for that info. I didn't realize it could run being so low on charge! Luckily, if this is an oddball problem, I did buy an extended warranty that covers the AC. There is no unusual noise of behavior from the climate control system (or anything other system). The belts have 30k miles on them and still look BN. This truck has been flawless since I bought it. |
