I am also having another issue that may provide a clue to someone with more experience than myself. The tachometer is (guessing) reporting approximately half of what the actual RPM's are or even less. It says the idle is 150-200 which the idle is high. It doesn't go over 1000 RPM. It was working fine last week.
Does the tach not working properly help diagnose the problem? |

Keep in mind that most of my experience is with Fords, so I'm a bit out of my element here. But, one of the first questions we would ask folks if we suspected an ignition module failure was if their tachometer did anything strange. Often when the ignition modules were failing, the tachometer would act very erratically when the ignition module was failing. I don't know if that's common on Toyota's as well, but would seem quite likely.

I think shorod is close to correct. I would see if you can find a substitute ignition module and see if that solves your problem. Other than carefully checking the wiring for short, breaks, or bad connections, there is no easy way to test the module.

My Celica is running great, I drove about 30 miles and the car started hesitating to run, I was in heavy traffic, I could hear rattling sounds which appeared as though they were coming from the heater. I stopped at a stop light and I could tell something was burning out. I went to the next stop light and the car died, it started and I went to the next stop light and the car would not start again. I tried starting the car for 6 hours, no fire from the coil.
I have no spark out of the coil. I am confident the coil is good. I have 2 coils. I went to the salvage lot and purchased an "igniter" (ignition module) for $35. I installed it on my Celica, still no fire out of the coil. I have a relay under the glove box that clicks when I crank over the engine. The engine cranks over very well for over 3 hours. I have an after market alarm. Why do I not have spark out of my coil? |

If a new Toyota coil doesn't solve the problem, you may have a bad ECM. Carefully check all the wiring for continuity and check the connections for corrosion or loose connectors.

I don't know that I'd condemn the ECM yet. There is still the possibility that the pickup coil which tells the igniter/ignition module where the camshaft is at is not providing the correct signal to the ignition system.

Unfortunately, I had to take my Celica to Firestone. $80. diagnostic fee. Problem, BROKEN TIMING BELT!
$799.00 to repair, I will do the work myself, $19.95 for a new belt at Auto zone. Is this the reason I was not getting spark out of the coil? What size is the "Crank pulley bolt"? Since the belt is broken, I will need to time the Crankshaft and the camshaft. How do I time the Crankshaft and the camshaft? All replies greatly appreciated... |

With a broken timing belt, the camshaft would not be rotating and therefore the pickup coil would not be picking up any pulse, which in turn means there would be no trigger to the igniter to tell the coil to fire.
I don't know the size of the crank bolt. To time the cam and crank pulleys there will likely be timing marks on the gears and there may even be marks on the belt that should line up with marks on the pulleys. You'll want to get your hands on a copy of the procedure for the timing belt replacement, either from a service manual or online. Is the water pump driven by the timing belt on this engine? Does it use a hydraulic tensioner? If Yes to either of those questions you should plan to replace those items as well. -Rod |

The spark problem comes and goes. The car does not start and then it starts. It couldn't do that if it was a timing belt, because the timing belt was not yet broken.
