1997 Grand Prix GTP Transmission Shifting Issue
Hello!
I have a 1997 Grand Prix GTP with the supercharged engine. It has 124,100 miles and the car has been running with VERY minimal problems. Just the other day I noticed that the car was not shifting properly. When driving 30-45 the rpms are high and the car will not shift. Once I hit 48 it will then shift. I brought the car into the dealer for a recall (completely different issue) and asked them to check out the transmission. They flushed the fluid, but said that the transmission is shot and it would be $3K to fix (more than the car is worth on the books). Has anyone experienced this issue and if so, is the only fix to replace the transmission? Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Heather |

Re: 1997 Grand Prix GTP Transmission Shifting Issue
Welcome to AF.
Just to clarify how is is the shifting in the lower gears or from a dead stop? Does it shift proper in the lower gears like 1-2, 2-3? What does it do when you manually shift gears? Also, any SES/CEL light and did the dealer scan for any possible stored codes?

Re: 1997 Grand Prix GTP Transmission Shifting Issue
Hello,
The check engine light is on, but its been on for awhile. I had it checked out and my mechanic said that it was an electrical short and there was nothing wrong with the car, but this was a few years ago. Please forgive me as I'm not a car expert by any means, but it definitely does shift from first to second gear, but I think the trouble is from 2 to 3. I did not try shifting manually, because I'm not sure how to do that since the car is automatic. |
