Re: 50 Greatest Drivers Cars

Well Im glad that I can say I've driven:

#14
#18
#28
#34

But Im mildly surprised that the 360 Modena isnt on there. And the Veyron is an obsurdly cool car, but I dont think that it's a "drivers car" because its a luxury rocket, whereas the McLaren F1 is a drivers car. Oh well...

Re: 50 Greatest Drivers Cars

Eh, that list is extremely late model heavy. I doubt many of those cars will stand the test of time like a classic E-Type Jag or GTO Ferrari do.

Re: 50 Greatest Drivers Cars

Interesting list, I wonder how much of it is based on real world experience, or from watching I'm a wanker Clarkson and reading magazines?

I do however have to agree with a lot of it, however "best drivers car" is such a subjective test I don't think its possible to compile a top 100.

Has anyone here ever driven a really tidy low mileage early 70s Honda Civic?
They are one of my top 10 favorite drivers cars.

Re: 50 Greatest Drivers Cars

Thanks for posting this crayzayjay, I'm going to have to go get this Evo.

I'm liking this list. 5 Porsches, 4 BMWs, 2 Audis, 1 VW, and 0 Mercedes-Benz!

Ferrari wins overall with 7 listings. The top three are probably my three favorite supercars of all time. Plenty of respect for the Japanese with the NSX-R, IT-R, and GT-R (too many "R"s) all in the top 10 (not to mention the Imprezas and Evos later on). America got completely hosed except the Ford Cosworths and the Ford GT.

I can easily see where this could become a top 100 driver's cars list. You would see nearly every BMW M-car on the list (especially the E39 M5 and E36 M3), most of the notable Porsche 911s, and a bunch more Ferraris.

Moppie- I would guess this list is based largely from personal experience. Evo is probably my favorite car mag. They've driven just about everything.

Except, it notes "Readers" opinions
How many EVO readers have actually driven all those cars?

Didn't notice that...

Well it can't be too Clarkson oriented because he isn't a fan of the McLaren F1 or Porsches. None-the-less, it appears to be a good list.

Re: 50 Greatest Drivers Cars

I think it's a great list - I think the Veyron is a joke at #5 though.

The fact that there are so many 'real-world' cars on there makes it a better list imo - the reason there isn't a 250GTO on there is because so few people have driven one!

Re: 50 Greatest Drivers Cars

In general, this being a readers list, I'm not entirely convinced by the cars voted. Of course, I know that much of this list is going to be more about opinions based on what is read as opposed to what is experienced but still...

Supercars aside, I'm not convinced by the 205 GTi being listed but not the equally good 106 or the (in my opinion BETTER) 306. Sacred Cow syndrome? The last time I drove a 205 GTi, I found it to be more nervous than i had liked and lift off oversteer to be a bit too sudden and not as progressive and hence more forgiving and easy to drive fast/rough like you can in the 106 and 306 cars.
And there's no way in hell that it's better than the newer Renault Clio cars. Those things behave in a way that would make a 205 hang it's head in shame. The Clio (I've only ever driven a 172) turns harder, they follow a line better and oversteer more progressively than the 205 with the added bonus of having more power, more space, more comfort, more safety, a heater that works and A/C. It's like the 911 of the GTi world. Can't wait to try out the new Clio 197.

I also find it strange that the Ford Puma (or at least the Racing Puma) isn't there when the Integra Type-R is just about better. Could be down to the numbers of course, the Racing Puma being that much rarer and harder to find on the roads.

The NSX-R being so high up is nice, especially seeing how even the magazine staff never have a bad thing to say about it and to this day say that the car is next to flawless. It's good to see that readers get this.

Not convinced that the TVR should be there, at least not without qualifying. I really liked the speed 6 car but from what I gather, the V8 is a touch nose heavy with doesn't translate well into the handling, making an already tempermental car even more nervous. Better than mid-engined V12 Ferrari? Better than a V12 Ferrari GT car? Better than a 355? In the real world maybe because I would certainly buy a Cerbera over a 355 or a 550 but I'm certain that it isn't the better car. That stupidly high central tunnel just gets in your way if you are little like me.....
The same is true for the Sagaris.
A TVR doesn't really fit in with my idea's of a driver's car.

Controversial. Light, high-powered, RWD.... You sure you're not just annoyed cos they don't accommodate midgets?

Re: 50 Greatest Drivers Cars

I think I need to be educated on a "drivers car" really is cause I think the SLR drives pretty freakin' sweet!!!

Definitely better than most of the Bimmer's up there.

This isn't just a list of supercars. As far as supercars go, everything I've read or heard about the SLR says that it is inferior to the likes of the Carrera GT, Enzo, Zonda, and the like in terms of a driving experience.

A "driver's car" is a pretty general term that we apply to cars that are simply more fun to drive then your average car. Usually it is closely tied to handling rather then power. Notice the absence of any muscle cars from the list and the presence of cars like the IT-R, Mini Cooper, E30 M3, and the various Renault Clios.

In reality, a driver's car is just about anything you want it to be.
