Question How many amps does a stock alternator put out?

I need to replace my alternator. (1988 V6 4Runner)

My original gave me 16 years of service.

I plan on installing a Warn winch that requires at least 60-70 amps. I also plan on installing a couple of nice off-road lights.
Should I go for another Toyota unit or should I try going aftermarket? I have had bad luck with rebuilt alternators. For some reason I have had to replace them a few times under warranty until I get a good one. The only aftermarket one I would probably trust is made by PowerMaster ($550), it supposedly puts out 175 amps at freeway speed and at least 50% more at idle.

How much could a stock alternator handle? How many amps does it put out?

Re: How many amps does a stock alternator put out?

i have a standard alternator but i am planing on putting 4 off road lights on it . as of right now i only have 2. the package i bought said it only uses 30 amps for 2 lights but if i ran it all of the same wire it would be 60 amps beacuse i would have 2 sets of lights. so will this exceed my alternator and maybe cause damage to it ?

If you wire them in parallel, you will exceed the output of the alternator. You will need to upgrade. If you wire them in series, they will not draw that much current, but since the resistance has doubled, you will lower their brightness. I believe they are meant to be wired in parallel. I would upgrade the alternator.

That doesn't sound right, it would put out less at idle RPMs than at highway RPMs.

I think he meant 50% more than the stock alternator at idle....
