Brake pedal does not return
Just replaced my brake pads today. I've been having trouble with my brake pedal for a while though. For about 6 months now when i press on the brake it makes a sort of squeaky noise and feels crunchy, the car still stops fine though. It feels and sounds like a rubber diaphragm that is (suppose) to push the pedal back but i'm not sure. And now today its a lot slower coming back than normal after i replaced my brake pads. So what could this be?

Re: Brake pedal does not return
1st thought was master cyl. have you lost fluid, does it hold foot pressure is it possible we got air in the system?? but with the noise your hearing it might be a brake booster thats starting to leak.find the area of the air noise is it down by your feet? ck to make sure hydrolics are ok can you pump up the pedal? good luck, mike

Re: Brake pedal does not return
The car is an 83. Only brake work i've done is replaced the pads front and rear, did the rear pads a while ago. I need to redo some brake lines so i'll end up bleeding the system then obviously if thats part of the problem right now. And yes the noise is only coming from down near my feet. I hope this isn't expensive to fix or anything.

if the pedal is soft goes to the floor this is usually a brake line leaking,,,or a bad master cylinder... when replacing the brake pads it is best to open bleed screw when pushing pads/caliper piston fully back with a C clamp this is to prevent bad brake fliud from entering the master cylinder,,which is not good.. |

Re: Brake pedal does not return
I have experienced no changes in the engine behavior when pressing the brake. So i'm not really sure what it could be other than maybe some O-rings or a diaphragm thats dried out..i'll have to take a look tomorrow. I'll have to see if i still have this issue after i replace some well overdue brake lines and bleed the system.

example would be using a container that had oil in it then using the same container to fill the brake fluid level.. |

Re: Brake pedal does not return
I'm not sure when it started, but my '85 Caprice had HydroBoost instead of a vacuum booster for the brakes. Just a thought.
