'01 Oldsmobile Alero question

i recently bought a 2001 oldsmobile alero gls coupe. it has the 3.4L 6cylinder.

i have tried researching online, but not much luck. I have a few questions.

does anyone know the rated top speed on the car and/or what that cars top is limited to from factory?

whats the max speed rating for the stock tires?(a guy i know said that all tires have certain speed they can reach safely)




any and all info is greatly apreciated. as i stated i tried looking online, but so far have not found anything.

Speed rating of the tires depends on what brand and ratings they have. Do you have the original Goodyear Eagle tires?

The top speed limiter in the PCM module is set to cut in at around 108 mph.

yes, i have the stock tires on it. im not 100% sure which ones they are. all i can say, is that the car came with the chrome alloy rims. the wheels also seem to be wider than your average tire. i hope thats enough info. ill try to find a picture if anything.

I believe the GLS models have the Goodyear Eagle LS tires. Just check the lettering on the tire. This is a "H" rated tire meaning good for up to 130 mph. Size should be P225/50-R16. Stock alloy rims are 6.5" in width.

The GL2 models have the P225/50-R16 GoodYear Eagle RSA "V" rated performance tires rated at up to 149 mph. Regardless of what model GM keeps the speed limiter at around 108 mph. The speed limiter can be overcome with a re-programmed PCM module from DHP where it will be removed or unlimited.

ok, jsut got home from work. before i frove to work i checked the tires. they are the goodyear Eagle LS tires. and thanks for the speed rating on them.

how much would one of these speed limiter eliminator programs run me? are there different ones that change it to different speeds? or is one completely adjustable?

also, im going to be getting new tires soon. the ones on the car now have sidewall wear and will need replacing sometime around spring. im looking for a tire with either the same or a higher speed rating. preferably something with a lower profile(the stock size are fine as well), will fit on the stock rims and looks as well as performs good. anyone have any suggestions?

ok, i looked at the goodyear site. and found tires for teh 2001 oldsmobile alero gls.

those there seem to be the best all around from the numbered ratings.

my question is now, will these tires work with the stock alloy rims? or will i have to buy new ones. it says that the apporved rim width is 6.0-7.5.

What's the point in removing the speed limiter? Anything over 90mph is just stupid on the road. And don't say for a 1/4 mile track because you won't hit it.

i never implied that i wanted to remove it. i was jsut curious on how much it would cost.

The DHP PCM module runs around $99 after core exchange.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season appear to be excellent tires from what I've read. Around $150 each. There are customer reviews at www.discounttire.com and www.tirerack.com.

Tread pattern looks just like the Assurance triple treads, but cheaper....

Also on the DHP Pcm,
you'd add another $50-200 to get it tuned by a shop with tuning capabilities.

and as for the tires....will they work with the stock rims? or will i have to get new ones?


at tirerack.com i found them for 123.00 a piece. so far the best price ive found. if they will fit the stock alloy rims that came with the car, i will be getting them indefinately. so can anyone help me out with this final question?

If you plan to remove the speed gov. then you better be prepared for it. You HAVE TO have the best suspension possible and brakes too. Otherwise you are asking to loose control

im not plnning on removing the speed limiter, no need for the area im in. it was jsut curiosity.

but looking around, i jsut realized there was a regulare alero coupe and a alero gls coupe..... what the difference between the two? i sound really stupid, but i really have no idea.

so i apologize if im being a pain, but can someone tell me what the difference is between the alero gls coupe and the regular alero coupe? how would i tell on which one i have exactly?( i feel like SUCH a dumba$$)

GLs is the trim of the vehicle. All it is is what the trim offers such as rotors all around (not drums) or even power windows, you know just features. They were different every year i believe. I have the GX coupe (coupe is a 2 door) and lucky me it has rotors all around instead of rear drums. Then theres the newer 2002 I think that the GX model has rear drums. Try and check you insurance card, it should say the trim.

Actualy the sport models also hav bigger sway bars front/rear. Different coil springs too, stiffer.

If the tires say they will fit your rims then they should be ok.

Your best bet is to find them at a local store. If you buy all 4 you usualy get a better deal, plus free rotation and balance for the tires.
This is important in getting the most life out of a tire.


Also on the DHP thiers a lot more to them then just removing the speed limiter. You can play with 100's of variables, like timing, KR, A/F ratio, trans shift points, etc etc.
