The general rule with most cars is you need to change the oil every 3000 miles, it's not every 2000. Don't get me wrong, if you feel the need, changing your oil more often than the general rule isn't bad, just a little more often than usual. Also, some oils so claim you can go longer between changes, though I never trust it. I pretty much stick with every 3000. Unless it's something like the new BMW's, where the manufacturer claims a drastic difference. The new BMW 5 series for example claim every 7000-10000 miles. In this case I'd find out what kind of oil the car runs, blend, syntheic, regular, and run that type. If they run a synthehic, I'd try to find out what grade of syntheic it is and stick the same grade or higher if you change brands.
