Advices for an used car on a budget
I have a budget of around 9,000 dollars (10,000 would be a stretch but I'd go there if the 1k difference would really mean something) to buy an used car here in US. That amount should include Florida taxes and dealer fees (I'd rather buy a car where they don't charge one).
All I heard so far is to buy a Japanese car, because American cars break too often and are not reliable as it used to be. I have considered 2006 Mazda3s, Nissan Altimas, Jettas, Passats, Accords and Civic Coupes, and even some older BMWs and Audis. What I'd like to ask you guys is this: if you had this budget, what would you buy? I am aware car has a lot to do with personal taste, but disregard my taste. I want to make a rational choice so as long as you can tell me why you would buy your choice, it would mean a lot to me. Thank you! |

Re: Advices for an used car on a budget
For starters, while I LOVE some BMW and Audi models, the maintenance on those cars will kill your budget. Keep in mind that beyond the purchase price on the car, don't forget that you'll have insurance payments (which can be WAY higher on some cars than others) and other maintenance needs. For example, I bought my Civic 3 months ago, and it now has a dead starter that is going to cost me about $400 if I'm lucky.
Out of the other cars you mentioned, the Passat is a BIG car and won't get the gas mileage of the majority of your other options. Not to mention that VW will also have raised maintenance costs compared to the Nissans, Hondas, and Mazdas. Out of what you mentioned, I'd focus my search on the Altima, Accord and Civic. Keep in mind that used dealerships can sometimes offer limited "warranties" but that private sellers are more likely to have maintenance records showing that the car was properly cared for. Good luck in your search, and let us know what you finally decide!

Re: Advices for an used car on a budget
The Mazda 3 is a nice car, but as I recall they don't have the same reliability as the others you were looking at. I could be mistaken. I guess I just love Hondas and Nissans as they are what I've had the most of.
