Re: CV Joints "How Long Does Yours Last"
Not sure, but they are similar in properties. Considering the difference in cost and the lack of need for heat resistance, I would bet it's a standard petroleum grease-based formulation.
In any event, they would both rot rubber. Just like both dino oil and synthetic oil have the same seal compatibilities. I don't think there is anything special about CV joint grease. Nitrile rubber is another very high-quality rubber material. That is another possibility for the CV boots. |

Re: CV Joints "How Long Does Yours Last"
Brian and ice745,
I did some research. From the WD-40 web site FAQ's; What surfaces or materials are ok to use WD-40 on? "WD-40 can be used on just about everything. It is safe for metal, rubber, wood and plastic." ... It does say in the same paragraph that it is a petroleum based product. www.wd40.com/Brands/wd40_faqs.html Mike |

Re: CV Joints "How Long Does Yours Last"
"Rubber" is a pretty generic term. I would not use it on standard natural rubber. Others are ok, I guess. Your CV boots are not natural rubber.
WD40 is simply very thin lubricating oil in a carrier. Use it where you would safely use lubricating oil and nowhere else. If it works for your CV boots, then it works... |

WD-40 is good bug killer, even works on roaches.

Re: Re: CV Joints
I have a question...
I just got a 92 Camry XLE as a hand me down. It is in good shape except for that I took it in to get looked at, and they sais that CV boots are torn and need to be replaced. The dealer quoted me $250 each used (and I need both) or $400 new plus labor! This just seems extremely high to me, I looked on the internet and I am not sure exactly what part could be costing so much... He also referred to them as "CV Axles" he said that the joints will become dry becuase the boots are torn? Any advice? = ) |

How easy is it to change the half shafts? I have a friend with a 96 that needs hers changed badly - both sides.

Re: CV Joints "How Long Does Yours Last"
Since I first found the boot split, it has been more than 10k miles now. And the Joint is not making any noise. I am wondering how long can it last?
