2001 Grand AM - Trac Off Light
I have rebuilt 2001 Grand AM with issues and no one can seem to find the problem. When I first get in to drive it the trac off light is on, which makes it shift really hard, after I drive it for about 20 min. and turn it off and back on , the light goes off and it drives fine . If it sets for to long the light will come on again when I start the car. I have had two different people run diagnostics and both came up with differnent codes initally, but when asked to run further test to diagnose the problem, neither could get any codes at all. One said a possible ABS problem, and one said a pressure control solenoid problem, but like I mentioned these were general codes that came up once and once cleared they never came up again. The dealer ran 2 hours worth of tests and came up with nothing, the computer was reset but light is still on. Has anyone had this happen to them? The dealer did say he did not think it was in the transmission and could be electrical. Anyone who could offer me some advice? I would greatly appreciate it, Im at my wits end with this. Thanks again!

Re: 2001 Grand AM - Trac Off Light
Welcome to AF.
Was it taken to a GM dealer? If so not good news if they could not find anything wrong with it assuming they used a Tech II scanner and ran proper diagnostics. Without getting any odb-ii DTCs, tranny codes or ABS/Chassis codes hard to say what the problem is. I have never heard of traction control (ETS) causing hard shifting but I guess its possible. The only part that I can think of would be the EBTCM - (Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module).

Re: 2001 Grand AM - Trac Off Light
Hello, Thank you for you reply. Yes, it was taken to a GM dealer. When I say rebuilt let me rephrase that in that I mean it was once wrecked and I have a salvage title. The dealer came up with an intial ABS code but cleared it and upon running further tests came up with nothing. I have also had problems with my brakes, and hearing blinking noise in the dash. I have had new rotors and pads put on about 9 months ago , and 2 months ago, I had to have the rotors turned and more pads. I just had my oil changed yesterday and they told me Im going to need new pads again after another 3000 miles. Do you think the light could have something to do with the ABS module? Thanks again for your help . Any idea on what I should do next?

Did they give you the code no that was cleared? Your pads are wearing fast. Any hard driving or a lot of stops? On the Trac light here is some testing to do if light is always on. Where it has been rebuilt I would go over all wiring and connections and look over the PDF posted. Good Luck and let us know how it goes. MT

Re: 2001 Grand AM - Trac Off Light
Hello,
No they did not give me a code number at the dealer. Just normal driving since the second pads have been put on. Thanks for your advice, I will have to try and find someone to do the check you gave me, I would like to assume they did this at the GM dealer, but I don't know for sure. Thanks again. If a code comes back check it out first. The test I posted is for repair if the light is on and no code. It is for wiring and connection problems testing which you may have if it has been rebuilt. Also check the part no on EBCM and IPC some times they get switched on a rebuild. Print it out and go over it with who ever checks it again. Good luck

Re: 2001 Grand AM - Trac Off Light
Hello,
I just realized the test that was posted is for the Low Trac light and that light is not on , it is the Trac Off light that stays on, do you have a test for that light I can do? Thanks so much! Is there anyway to disconnect the trac off light?

If it is giving hard shifting problems the problem needs to be fixed. Maybe best to look around and find a dealer that has a factory trained tech on diagnostic engine/transmission/ABS problems. Good luck
