Re: 1/12 Datsun 240ZG

Thanks Spidey and Willimo..
Haven't got a lot farther this last week, been too tied from work......But I have been trying to nail the final colour choice......
To begin with, the car which drew my attention at the outset, was this one....

I just fell head over heels in LOVE with it.......To me, this is just about the perfect Z, regardless of whether or not it's a real ZG model...
It's a '73 model, and the ZG's were '70 only, as far as I've been able to find out....I just liked the "look" and the colour.

Then.....I found some pics of this one........

And this has got to be the best/perfect angle to take a pic at....

I'm really torn....I love both colours.....In my head, I'm about 51% blue, 49% red....
I'll make a decision pretty soon....maybe I need a second car.....

cheers guys
Greg

Re: 1/12 Datsun 240ZG

What I think you should do is this: the ZG that you are building is going to be custom so go with the blue, the safari kit that you got that you said you wanted to do in a show room stock build paint that orange since orange is a factory color. This way you will get both. Just my thought though......however a second kit isnt a bad idea either......

I do like the way you think.....
Problem is..(well, not really a problem..) the Safari kit will take a lot more to return it to "stock" than I first anticipated.....
None of the necessary mods are large, apart from the spare wheel well and the fuel tank...but I think I can copy them ok.....I will give it a go anyways...
You have pretty much read my mind in the direction and colour choice for both, now I'm convinced....BLUE for this one,
RED/ORANGE for the next one..

Thanks Spidey
Greg

I vote to blue.
Orange / red is like a bad Ferrari replica. Sorry.
Go on. Excellent modeling skills and very interactive WIP.

Thanks GTZ..
I've just looked through what colours I have, and TS-44 from Tamiya looks pretty close...
I'll need a couple of cans I think....just to be sure.

You Tifosi may be shocked to find out that Ferrari didn't invent the color red

I actually really like the orange, but I heart orange on just about anything (oddly I don't really have the balls to paint many models red or orange for some reason). The blue will be perfect, though. You can't go wrong either way, really. It's going to be such a stunning build you could paint it baby poop brown and it would be just beautiful.

Re: 1/12 Datsun 240ZG

Update, May 23rd...

I got to thinking, how I was going to mount the exhaust system.....seeing as I cut off the ugly giant mounting pins that were once on the muffler...
Also, being a non-standard, sports system, a little artistic expression could be wielded....
I still wanted to stay within the boundaries of realism though..

Being a larger than stock system, I felt that a mid-pipe mount may be necessary....

In the rear, I made up an "L" bracket to attach the U-bolt too..the U-bolt clamp is scratched up as well..

The bracket by its self, and a view of the new parts separately..

And an overall shot, looking towards the front....

I've also started work on a second fuel tank and spare wheel well....When I first planned to build the second Datto as a "stock" street version, I forgot to take into account that the Safari version does not have either of these items.....
Either way, they may go onto this build if I get them finished..

Thanks for following and enjoying this as much as me guys..your input has been a great support for me..
More soon.....

cheers
Greg

Thumbs up Re: 1/12 Datsun 240ZG

Magnificent work. Mal put me on to this thread and it's definitely worth it! Incidentally, I'm the one who has asked him to make me a 1:12 R32 GT-R...... (I have no skills whatsoever).

I think you are utterly mad making the tyres from scratch - the work involved is just crazy. Did you think about cutting the tread in using a craft knife rather than glueing individual tread blocks?

I am loving the care and attention lavished on the suspension and exhaust system. The brackets are works of art in themselves.

I think the standard wheels and tyres are great, but now, seeing the work you've put into the minilites, they are superb and I see your point.

Great build so far - you are an obscenely talented individual!

Re: 1/12 Datsun 240ZG

Thanks for your extremely kind words Ajrichar..
Yes, the tread caused some headaches...still is...., but it is coming together...
I did think of trying to "cut" the pattern into the surface, but feared I would fail miserably.....This was the best option I could think of.
The whole exercise could have been helped, had there been a good range of 1/12 spare parts and wheels/tyres out there in the market...

I'm really pleased you're enjoying the build mate, say G'day to Mal, hey..

cheers
Greg
