Yamaha R1 custom design

Hi Guys, I had the Tamiya Yamaha Taira Racing kit waiting to build, i thought just painting it silver was a bit boring so I have decided to do a bit of a custom paint scheme, loosly based on some of the more recent R1 bike paint jobs. I choose zero paints Gulf metallic blue, champagne silver and black for the main colours. Any feedback welcome.
Cheers
Col

This is a sketch I mocked up of the design, it may change slightly as I go...

Body work was sprayed silver first, then I masked off and sprayed the blue over the top, finally finishing with the black stripe along centre, a few spare decals applied. the blue looks absolutely stunning in the flesh, the pictures don't quite do it justice, the satin finish also looks lovely, though I think I will clear coat it to bring out the colours even more.

decided to do weels champagne silver instead of black

started exhaust and rear hugger, again used my own cf decals, very happy with application on hugger, will probably knock pattern back a bit with a waft of black. Exhaust needs masking and sprayed with alclad chrome, and some heat staining.

Thats it for now

Absolutely stunning work. CF is great and so is your masking job and color choice. Did you mask for black on the top cowl with masking tape or something else?

thanks joel, just used tamiya masking tape for all masking, it works really well with zero basecoat paints

Re: Yamaha R1 custom design

Bit more progress made, I have clear coated body panels and hugger, 3-4 coats of Mr hobby.

To complete the exhaust I initially sprayed gloss black, then applied cf decal, then clear coated a couple of times, then masked carbon and spray alclad chrome, finally added some heat staining. just need to apply manufacturer decal to end can.

Starting to assemble engine and frame now, will post soon.
Cheers Col

Re: Yamaha R1 custom design

Nice paint job!! I think it is better than the sketch, I prefer the blue you used.
Also great job on the carbon fiber, so they are made by you?? They looks excellent

Hope to see an update soon

Re: Yamaha R1 custom design

cheers jezz, microsol doesn't have a great deal of effect, it does soften it a bit, however it is really thin and quite tough. I find it really easy to use, and I am quite crap at decalling without microsol!! I bought some crazy modeller cf a while ago and found it impossible to use, microsol had no effect on it what so ever.if you are interested in trying some send me a private message and we'll sort something out.
cheers

Brunette eyebrows with Blonde hair and make the skin a nice light tan color hint hint (Sun Tan).

Re: Yamaha R1 custom design

managed to progress a this one a bit more, assembled engine, front forks and some cf bits and bobs.

cf applied to chaingaurd, fairing covers, and mirrors, just need clear coating and maybe knocking back a little with some black.

standard forks, upperpart sprayed with a wadt of transparent orange and smoke. some chrome film wrapped around inner shock.
should get this one completed by or over weekend hopefully.
