Re: Check Engine Light
At a minimum, we should know the make, model and year. For more enlightenment, you should offer the roads that have been taken.

Re: Check Engine Light
This is a Legacy Outback. The scanner failed to shut the light off. Could it possibly be the main computer?

Did the scanner find a code?

Re: Check Engine Light
Yes, but codes didn't work. The light shines one.

Re: Check Engine Light
When your car computer turns the "Check Engine" ligt on, it is the way it tells you: "Something is wrong". What did you do to find what was wrong?

Re: Check Engine Light
When the scanner was used, and codes came up. The light didn't go off as it is supposed to do and the codes didn't apply to anything plausable.

Re: Check Engine Light
All right! Let us start from the other end!
What did the codes say? Sam

Re: Check Engine Light
Spoke to the mechanic myself. When they hooked up the scanner, codes came up which he ignored since the light didn't go out when it was hooked up he assumed the main computer was faulty. My first thought is, find another mechanic, but husband refuses because this mechanic is a friend and he wouldn't second guess him. So thank you all for your help. Guess i'm doomed to slamming my head into a brick wall.

Re: Check Engine Light
I wish I could help you but first you have to pesuade your husband to take your car to a REAL mechanic who is not necessarily his friend. Show him this thread.
The equation is simple: No promble = no code Code = problem What kind of Subaru do you have? What code did he get? I will look for the code for you. You actualy can do it yourself. Go to www.usmb.net. Since he used a code reader I asume this is a new generation. Look under "New Generation" Subarus. Do Search for codes. Hope you will resolve your problem. Sam

Re: Check Engine Light
I just have made a search at www.autozone.com for the location in New York area. They do have stores there. Go to any store. They will read your code for free and give you basic advice on what to do next.

Re: Check Engine Light
Your husband's friend is a moron, if the code is there it's there for a reason. The CEL will only go out once the code is cleared from the system and it will only clear once the problem has been rectified.
If your husband won't take the car elsewhere, take it elsewhere yourself. CEL codes which don't go away ARE NOT a faulty computer, they are a problem with something and the computer is trying to tell you what.
