'94 Impreza
Hey guys,
I would appreciate your help here. I have a buddy with a 94 subaru impreza with an automatic trans. He came out a bank, started his car, tried to put it in reverse but it was a no go. Nothing--as if he was in neutral. He got the car towed, and now the forward gears work but still no reverse. The car has 145k miles. Anybody have any clue what this could be? The mechanic didn't even look at it but just said it needs a new tranny to the tune of $2000. Thanks. |

Either way, the mechanic is going to charge the cost of labor for taking the tranny off and putting it back on.
Any chance you're handy enough to do it? It's not technically hard, you just need lots of extra hands. If so, junkyard Impreza trannies are cheap. |

Towed?
Is it an AWD of FWD Impreza? If it's an AWD, please tell me they didn't literally tow it as it really will need a new transmission if they did!

Re: '94 Impreza
Thanks for the replies guys. It is AWD, but they put it on a flatbed to transport it. You never know, though, with some of these unscrupulous tow truck drivers these days...
I mentioned the junkyard tranny possibility to my friend, but he does not want to deal with it. It looks like he is going to sell it. The mechanic offered him $500, which seems like a decent price if it really needs a new tranny. |
