Belt for metal lathe
I recently inherited a metal lathe from my grandpa. The motor is seperate and has a 3 speed belt drive. There is no way, that I can see, to remove/install the belt from the lathe side. The pulley and shaft appear to be one solid piece (maybe pressed together?), and the gear housing has a "C" shaped extension to hold the shaft.
I was in a hurry when I got it, so I cut the belt and figured I'd take the time to remove whatever part of the lathe has to be removed to change it. I looked at the belt, and saw that it appeared to have been glued together at one time. There was a diagonal line (perpendicular to the edge) through the belt that looked like glue. So I figured I'd go to the hardware store and ask for a glue-together belt. The guy looked at me like I was crazy. Does anyone know where I can find one? I don't suppose it matters, but the belt looks and feels like leather, A rubber belt would work just as well, right? This is a VERY old lathe, my grandpa got it shortly after returning home from WWII.

Re: Belt for metal lathe
Dont know if it is a South Bend lathe but maybe this can help you:
http://www.wewilliams.net/docs/Belt%...20No%20600.pdf If you can't find leather for the belt I would at least try with a rubber belt. The site where I found that pdf has more interesting things, take a look: http://www.wewilliams.net/SBLibrary.htm Good luck! |

Re: Belt for metal lathe
I can make a reinforced leather belt with a removable link for your lathe. It took me a while to figure it out but they last years now. you can find kits also if you are so inclined.

Re: Belt for metal lathe
Probly is a South Bend J-Ri.
I've got 2, one works and the other is parts. Not something I use regularly though. The belts do have to be cut or like frank suggested, kits are out there for these machines. Though they do come apart(the lathes), I dont suggest it .
